Happy Holidays from Patrick and Doug!

Episode 17: Hometree is My Christmas Tree

  1. 1.) If Elf is actively trying to be a Christmas classic, then that's fine by me, because I think it succeeds at what it's trying to do. Personally, I think it's quite funny and a lot of fun, not to mention it has a metric ton of quotable lines. I don't think you guys have done an Elf podcast if my memory serves, correct? Perhaps that might be a worthwhile venture one year.

2.) Third best adaptation of A Christmas Carol: The Muppet Christmas Carol

3.) I suppose I should consider deleting Scrooged from my DVR that I still haven't gotten around to watching this year (or ever, for that matter, since I've never seen it at all.

    1. If you have never seen Scrooged and like Bill Murray, it is worth watching at least once. Like Doug I am a fan of the movie, though I will admit it is flawed and parts are quite dated.

    2. Thanks, Tom. I'll probably still give it a watch. I do feel like I need to see it once, and for the most part, I do like Bill Murray.

    3. I love Scrooged - it's one of those movies that I taped when I was younger (because Dr. Venkman) and watched over and over so it might have a lot of sentimental value for me, but I think it holds up enough to definitely be worth a watch.

And Doug - my copy of It's a Wonderful Life (that I've been meaning to watch since you listed it as a favourite) is on the way - still haven't seen it but having become quite a Jimmy Stewart fan, I'm sure I'll love it! If not, you owe me $20! Just kidding - it was almost $25.

    4. Jimmy Stewart is the best and It's a Wonderful Life is just great, Sol. It's not only worth seeing, but owning in your personal collection.

  2. I just want it noted that none of those shots of Cameron Diaz are repeated. All of that footage is in the movie.

  3. BTW, there are SO MANY places online to watch "A Keaton Christmas Carol." For free! Here is one. Here's another. Pick your poison -- both feature ads. But whatever. It's a Christmas miracle!

  4. For my Christmas pick, I think I'll have to go with the extended cut of Aliens, because I'm a hard-hearted b*stard who's increasingly indifferent to Belated Solstice Day.

  5. We like Scrooged round these here parts. I'm talking about Alabama. Alabama is all about Scrooged. And incest.

Also, I decided a few years ago that I'm going to start watching Batman Returns every single Christmas. Gotham at Christmas time all covered in snow and killer clowns, Christopher Walken in a bizarre wig, Michael Keaton, Michelle Pfeiffer in that tight black costume, and MIchael Gough, aka Santa Claus.

I agree about Elf being a manufactured classic, too. It IS fine, and I enjoy it when I watch it, but it's the Frankenstein Monster of Christmas classics. It stands on the shoulders of 23 different giants.

  6. Oh man. Can't believe you guys forgot Gremlins. Gremlins every year.

    1. Nice! Yes. Of course. Clearly I was too focused on Reindeer Games.
