I really just wish the good things you're talking about had been more developed and cohesive. I still think this would make a great Netflix mini-series. I feel like I'm in the vast minority in loving The Kitchen; but I do understand the criticisms people have leveled against it. I think it helps to view it less as gritty realism and more as a modern version of 70s exploitation/crime pictures. There are plenty of male-led mobster movies and not all of them are The Godfather or Goodfellas, but they aren't all trying to be either. Likewise, I don't think The Kitchen is trying to be Widows (despite the MANY comparisons I've read between the two); it's a comic book adaptation so it's going to be over the top at times.

I felt that the performances were really strong, particularly Haddish and McCarthy. The monologue McCarthy has toward the end really resonated with me, where she explains that she's not doing this for her kids; she's doing it for herself. I'm sure I don't have this quote verbatim, but she talks about how she's spent her life being grateful to people and institutions that have done her no favors; and despite all that gratitude she has spent every moment afraid. Now she doesn't have to be.

Some of this is wish fulfillment/revenge fantasy; but it's powerful to see women take control of their lives and it's honest to show that even the well-intentioned men have a hard time letting go of their unearned but unquestioned power.

Anyway. I loved this movie, thanks for writing about it! rosiejoyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15387708978537779522noreply@blogger.com
