There is something there that could be great but usually falls short. This movie and Tusk are the two that bother me the most because they are almost there, but as you pointed out Kevin Smith has a real issue with tone. Red state could have been a great little horror movie but decided to be a funny action/drama as well. Tusk was so close to being a quirky and disturbing horror but turned into a Johnny Depp pile of comedy diarrhea. I wish Kevin Smith would deliver one complete movie, and maybe he will, he has plenty of talent.
