As a big fan of both your Heavy Action columns and Craig R. Baxley’s films I’d love to read more from you about the guy’s work; if only he worked more regularly. It’s a shame he doesn’t seem to be up to much at the moment as he’s only 64 and could still bring a lot to the table. He’s a great shout for an Expendables film. I’ve said this on here before, but people could learn so much from him about how to put an action scene together that isn’t an incoherent mess and you can actually tell what’s happening instead.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15269502577280050395noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-72508987549332318632013-11-26T10:57:06.050-06:002013-11-26T10:57:06.050-06:00Yes.Yes.Patrick Bromleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00771837625286775607noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-9727475257571012372013-11-26T09:56:52.684-06:002013-11-26T09:56:52.684-06:00Will there be an article for 10 Directors You'...Will there be an article for 10 Directors You'd Like to See Work Less? That being said, I'm surprised Nicole has directed as many films as she has. Not because of talent, but industry financial expectations.

She got incredibly lucky that Catherine Keener's stock went up after The 40 Year Old Virgin and her Academy Award supporting turn in Capote. That, at least, insured Nicole another movie or two--which is what we got.

Hollywood really tried to push her film, Friends with Benefits into the mainstream and I know several people who thought they were going to see a Jennifer Aniston comedy were disappointed. However, knowing Nicole's work, I knew it would be much richer than that.

If Scorsese had not started working with DiCaprio, I'm afraid his name would be on this list as well.

Sometimes becoming collaborators with actors who have real name value helps a filmmaker get more work produced.

Kinda sucks, but I'll take whatever nuggets I can get nowadays.Cameron Cloutierhttp://www.bodianstfilms.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-16237622015869808262013-11-26T09:54:39.770-06:002013-11-26T09:54:39.770-06:00Actually, I'll throw Paul Thomas Anderson into...Actually, I'll throw Paul Thomas Anderson into the mix. He's not as bad with the gaps between films as some directors, but there was a five year wait in-between Punch-Drunk Love and There Will Be Blood, and then five more years in-between that film and The Master. Fortunately, I guess his next movie is coming out next year, but I certainly wouldn't mind seeing more from him more often. I did not realize there was seven years between Thin Red Line and New World, or that it was a longer gap than between Badlands and Days of Heaven. Sorry for the inaccuracy.

Like you, I think there's a lot to admire in even Malick movies I don't love. And I'm actually in favor of him working more regularly, because in a perfect world I want talented people to make as many movies as possible. It's going to mess up their averages -- there's a reason Woody Allen has so many bad movies, and it's because he has made SO MANY MOVIES -- but I'd rather have a messy Terrence Malick movie every two years than another Shawn Levy or Adam Shankman comedy.Patrick Bromleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00771837625286775607noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-85983800088923643322013-11-26T09:32:17.039-06:002013-11-26T09:32:17.039-06:00YES to all three -- especially Fred Dekker. Fred Dekker hasn't made a movie since RoboCop 3, and that's not ok. Between a Scott Pilgrim vs. the World now being one of my top 5 favorite movies of all time and, The World's End being one of my favorite movies of the year so far, really loving Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, and being super excited and intrigued about Ant-Man, Wright is one of my favorites and I hope he eventually increases his rate of output.

And, of course, the same applies to Tarantino.John Murphyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08810774557887719483noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-62746068376851346622013-11-26T09:06:48.281-06:002013-11-26T09:06:48.281-06:00I'll add Lucky McKee, Fred Dekker, and Eli Rot...I'll add Lucky McKee, Fred Dekker, and Eli Roth(and no I don't consider directing on "Hemlock Grove" working). The good news is that Mckee and Roth have movies coming out next year. So much to say but I have to leave early to visit my family for Thanksgiving.

One thing in particular stood out though. You wrote, "There is a reason that Terrence Malick's output only started to suffer once he started working more quickly."

I know you aren't the biggest fan of his recent work, and even I have to work myself up to watch any of his films (though I admire/respect them all), but this statement perhaps rings a bit false.

Between Badlands and Days of Heaven, five years went by.

Then 20 year gap, like George Lucas.

Between The Thin Red Line and The New World, seven years went by.

Between The New World and The Tree of Life, six years went by.

To the Wonder, released a year later, was completed rather quickly, I'll give you that but I know you have had an issue with Malick for some time. So is it only To the Wonder you see as a misstep by making this particular statement in your article?

Will write more later. Keep up the great work!Cameron Cloutierhttp://www.bodianstfilms.comnoreply@blogger.com
