It was over the top for a reason. NO bachelor has a pad like Jack Lemmon has in this film. NO butler is as anti-woman crazed as Terry Thomas ans we laughed at his antics in this regard. Even the music is overblown and melodramatic. And don't forget that in the end, after winning his court case for murdering his wife (which he didn't actually do) he wants his wife back desperately. It winkingly makes fun of the whole male-chauvinist mentality and punctures the Playboy mindset as the absurdity it was while purporting itself as supporting it. Even considering the time it's a deeply racist movie and a lot of smart people saw it that way even back then and protestet against it. Obviously (or not that obviously watching todays conflict in the US or, in my case, Germany) we came further in that question, which is good, and back then there were also a lot of people who took the shown statements for granted - I give you that. My point is: We can consider movies as "masterpieces" or "great films" if we see them and their accomplishments in the framed perspective of there time, but we are definitely allowed to and even should criticize them if we simply know it better. So you're right to do it, to point it out and mention it in your review and I think you do not even have to apologize for beeing too harsh, if this movie is giving you a bad feeling about the message presented. Watching old movies like these make me wonder how Gone Girl caught hell for sexism. I can't really explain without spoilers, but I didn't feel like Gone Girl made any broad statements about gender. It just had characters. Some of these older movies, however, are clearly insulting.Andy Bishophttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17324674060230571696noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-31830906907699815012015-02-18T12:49:10.001-06:002015-02-18T12:49:10.001-06:00I don't think you are being overly harsh at al...I don't think you are being overly harsh at all. i caught this on TV and thought it was abhorrent in its views on women so I was relieved when I saw this review in a strange feeling of solace or something. Apparently one of the few people male or female that would go talk to Wayne or Ford when one of the other crew members were upset. most of them were too scared. She is a kick arse lady. I hope to go to the festival in her home town in Ireland so I can celebrate her movies and meet her :) Mclintock is one I am very uncomfortable with though so I prefer Parent trap hahaGabby Ferrohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13953028733362435557noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-32216283239791211222015-02-17T13:56:14.947-06:002015-02-17T13:56:14.947-06:00I think part of the reason I give those two movies...I think part of the reason I give those two movies a pass is because Maureen O'Hara is so great in them that she makes me believe she's okay with what's happening. Like that's what she's been trying to get him to do the whole time. Not saying this is a healthy psychology, just that while I'm watching the movie I buy it haha.Andy Bishophttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17324674060230571696noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-202268514072341492015-02-17T13:41:30.706-06:002015-02-17T13:41:30.706-06:00For those very reasons "The Quiet Man" h...For those very reasons "The Quiet Man" has lost some of it's luster for me as well.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10475027751253870681noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-26180334729200120422015-02-17T13:38:32.390-06:002015-02-17T13:38:32.390-06:00Just curious, what are your thoughts on the John W...Just curious, what are your thoughts on the John Wayne movie McLintock? I love Wayne in general, and I had a deep love for this movie when I was a kid. I considered it one of my favorites. As I got older, though, I realized just how brazenly misogynistic it is. I mean it's a movie that openly condones hitting your wife to keep her in line. My secret shame, though, is that I still enjoy it. Am I evil, or am I just overcome with nostalgia and my love for the Duke?Andy Bishophttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17324674060230571696noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-84068381643194127322015-02-17T12:14:21.758-06:002015-02-17T12:14:21.758-06:00Jesus.
