Reminds me of the article on ...Interesting subject. Reminds me of the article on What happens to old comedians? And the idea "Comedy is a young man's game". Maybe acting is a young person's game, too.

Maybe story telling isn't as interesting to people as we age. Maybe there are less things to imagine. That sounds horrible but I don't mean it that way at all. I just mean maybe when we're younger it is more important to imagine different scenarios and understand things differently and be exposed to all these feelings. Perhaps older people have different kinds of concerns. Concerns that movies don't often satisfactorily address.
I could be wrong but I believe I'm right in thinking that interests and what's important and at the front of a person's mind changes over time.

And then you said DIANE KEATON!!!! No way is she taking what roles are best available to her. Did you see "As it Goes" with she and Michael Douglas? Holy CANOLI that was the worst, most indulgent piece of crap I've seen in ages. It's like she and Michael Douglas told the director exactly the lines they each wanted to say and how they wanted to play it so they could ...I don't know...bask in narcissism and not do any work. This was just Diane Keaton playing Diane Keaton in every other role. Hey I used to like Diane Keaton. But this movie made me think older actors DO lose it.

Meredith https://www.blogger.com/profile/11361935408436355904noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-43684607862528232982014-04-14T05:28:26.416-05:002014-04-14T05:28:26.416-05:00Heath, I'd just qualify your comments in that ...Heath, I'd just qualify your comments in that Hollywood and American movie studios are the ones that don't know what to do with older actors and how to tell stories about older people. While they still have their share of target demo and cheesy movies (I'm looking at you, "Best Exotic Marigold Hotel"), international/foreign/independent cinema is thriving with movies about men and women in their middle and older ages that aren't all Viagra jokes or 'too old for this shit' stories (aka the "RED" and "Expendables" movies).

"Gloria" (a 2013 Chilean movie released in the States earlier this year) is my particular favorite of this, a melodrama in which the characters happen to be older but it's not dwelled-upon or made a big deal. Other recent examples include "Le Week-End," "The Lunchbox," (both still playing in arthouse/indie theaters), "Amour," "Quartet," the remake of "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," etc. Outside of Hollywood (except maybe for cable TV channels like FX, AMC and HBO) there are creative people putting out (or at least trying to make) adult movies for adult audience that include people not between the ages of 18-49. You just have to look for them a little harder and maybe even learn to put up with reading subtitles.J.M. I wouldn't be surprised if part of the reason behind writing movies for younger actors is that they will probably demand a lower amount of money. This isn't true in all cases, but I imagine it is cheaper to have Chris Pine as a lead than De Niro. Obviously the trend towards big budget, special effects driven movies requires younger actors. There are few roles being written for the older actors, and instead we get movies like This Means War. I am sure that a comparable movie starring De Niro and Pacino would have cost a considerable amount more to make.

Having said all of that, I fall into the coveted 18-34 demographic, and I would much rather see meatier roles for the elder statesmen of film. If someone told me that De Niro was going to be in a movie that actually looked good, I would see it in a heartbeat. Excellent article Heath, and I hope there will be more opportunities for the legends; although I won't hold my breath.Jeremy Gramhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10416741227965048398noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-60544423319045051602014-04-09T20:33:48.994-05:002014-04-09T20:33:48.994-05:00I like Warren Beatty in the right role (which may ...I like Warren Beatty in the right role (which may ONLY BE McCabe and Mrs. Miller) and I like Bugsy, too, but I'd like Warren Beatty a whole lot more if he liked himself a whole lot less.

#BeattyHateyHeath Hollandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03802874033845631338noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-64170583223575297322014-04-09T20:31:57.767-05:002014-04-09T20:31:57.767-05:00I do definitely think they're taking the best ...I do definitely think they're taking the best job available, either for the financial reward or for the artistic one. So if that's true, why are there not better parts/screenplays/films being created by people like me who love these actors? There don't seem to be nearly as many movies being made that put story and performance up front as there were, say, 20 years ago when technology limited what filmmakers could do. We do still get those types of movies, but they fall into the minority of what Hollywood is creating. And those movies rarely cast mature actors in favor of younger talent (justifiably so, I might add). Movies with experienced, older actors seem to be at the bottom of the studio totem pole because they are the most unmarketable and financially risky type of film to make right now. But that's a whole other column. But then on the other hand, I think there's a lot to what Riske said above - they want to work! The offers even they get are limited (thanks to either Hollywood or Consumers - a chicken/egg kinda question) so I'm sure they just try to pick the best or most interesting looking options.

To us they're legends - I'm pretty sure most of them don't really think of themselves that way - they're just actors who long ago surpassed any financial NEED to work, but who love doing what they do and want to continue doing it in whatever capacity they can. I'm not sure if the likes of Robert DeNiro think much about their legacy but regardless, once you've accomplished something like Godfather II or Raging Bull, do any number of Killer Elites diminish that legacy? Not for me, that's for sure. If anything they should just try to be careful about what they do in their public personal lives - denying the Holocaust or talking to empty chairs at political conventions is far more likely to make me re-evaluate how I feel about an actor's past good work than any number of bad movies.Solhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03114869401584310369noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-39092770362372591002014-04-09T14:57:16.047-05:002014-04-09T14:57:16.047-05:00You love BugsyYou love BugsyAdam Riskehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01165600746796326821noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-7980401833757592682014-04-09T14:56:09.078-05:002014-04-09T14:56:09.078-05:00I like Warren Beatty in the right parts, and I lik...I like Warren Beatty in the right parts, and I like what he did for the industry in the '60s and '70s. He hasn't made a movie in over a decade, I think because he saw what direction his career might be headed in after (the not good but also not as bad as you've heard) Town & Country. Same with Gene Hackman, one turn in the less-than-stellar Welcome to Mooseport and he tapped out before he could become a parody of himself. I'd love to see both of them on screen more, but I respect the hell out of their decisions to drop out before they became punchlines.JPhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17867827164062216789noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-21257702860608344992014-04-09T14:47:39.768-05:002014-04-09T14:47:39.768-05:00Interesting column Heath. Funny enough I was pining for the greatness of Robert (Bobby) De Niro while recently watching The King of Comedy. While not one of his greatest performances it is really interesting/funny/different which you can't say about anything he's done in years. Maybe we should just put these old guys/gals out on boats and watch them work for 2 hours.
