I was blown away by the realism of the dragon, and loved the location scenery. Even have a 35mm film trailer for this movie.filmfanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16252213178320303391noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-84559350064489911392016-07-08T23:17:04.853-05:002016-07-08T23:17:04.853-05:00Would love to know your thoughts now of Smaug vs. ...Would love to know your thoughts now of Smaug vs. Vermithrax, given that Smaug is what you called a "weightless CGI" creation, and yet carries so much physicality to him (likely due to the Gollum-style mo-cap work of Benedict Cumberbatch, combined with the efforts of the best effects studio, CGI and practical, in the world). Vermithrax certainly seems to be somewhat of an inspiration for Smaug's design and physicality. That said, the creators of this movie were likely looking in-turn to the vivid description of Smaug in the book form of The Hobbit…Marandahirhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08214904465701101969noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-1266153156769724762015-12-05T22:50:19.755-06:002015-12-05T22:50:19.755-06:00This has been my all time favorite movie since I w...This has been my all time favorite movie since I was 11. I wish the DVD had all the deleted scenes or an Easter egg. Truly the best Dragon and most amazing stop motion when Vetmathrax is trying to throw off Galen after she was stabbed and Galen is gaming into the spear. And speaking of Sacarius draconis, isn't that the same looking spear in The Hobbit The two towers when the horse people approach and surround the three following the Urokai tracks? This is in a PG movie. Produced by Disney. For many years, I couldn't remember a single thing about Dragonslayer, but that image has never left my head. It was filed away in my brain only as "that movie where the girl's foot gets eaten."" OMG that's exactly what I think. That image has being in my mind since I saw the movie in the 80's. That why I came here.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-79398730044535689792013-11-03T19:38:18.772-06:002013-11-03T19:38:18.772-06:00Right? She thought that the beginning was a little slow (Her actual words were, "The director should've put a hook in at the five minute mark.") She found the story to be believeable and compelling. She said that the effects weren't so over-the-top or jarring that they took you out of the moment. (She was amazed that Vermithrax was a puppet.) Her favorite characters were: Valerian, Elsbeth, Vermithrax, and the king's man-at-arms.brianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00569634986566504566noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-20660916868881674332012-08-29T22:50:25.165-05:002012-08-29T22:50:25.165-05:00And that is the greatest trick that Dragonslayer e...And that is the greatest trick that Dragonslayer ever pulled.Patrick Bromleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00771837625286775607noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-58324441464402719662012-08-15T09:00:32.236-05:002012-08-15T09:00:32.236-05:00Wow, I forgot this movie even existed. I now just have vague memories of bits and pieces of it, like you mention, from seeing in on television two decades ago and being disturbed enough that I apparently pushed it to the back of my brain as movie culture buried this deep down in the dirt, next to all those old ET Atari cartridges. I definitely will have to track this down and rewatch it. This is super interesting, because it's not often that I just completely forget a movie exists.Heath Hollandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03802874033845631338noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-24154129132510751832012-08-10T16:54:59.384-05:002012-08-10T16:54:59.384-05:00The effect of Vermithrax is even more impressive w...The effect of Vermithrax is even more impressive when you know that she's a armature creature controlled by a computer. They were able to program a few movements at a time making it possible to recreate the movements again if necessary for retakes.

Meanwhile, if you have time, have another look at Vermithrax crawling through the cave looking for Galen and then look at the 1998 "Godzilla" as it crawls through the subway tunnels and tell me if I'm crazy - I'd swear they "Ralph Bakshi-rotoscoped" their Godzilla onto that footage of Vermithrax for that scene (if not others).Kathynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-82647564784123952872012-08-10T15:53:31.450-05:002012-08-10T15:53:31.450-05:00I think you could tackle Alien Nation for this col...I think you could tackle Alien Nation for this column someday.Leonoreply@blogger.com
