I didn't love it. It was maybe the most negative response I've had for a review, to the point that a Shout! I haven't thought about that show in ages, but now you bring it up I'd be interested to see how it holds up today too.Stuarthttp://letterboxd.com/cohaagen/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-23888587572114359932013-08-01T17:28:03.520-05:002013-08-01T17:28:03.520-05:00It would be nice if Milius has a hand in the produ...It would be nice if Milius has a hand in the production. I remember really digging it when it originally aired back in 1992-93. I would have been in eighth or ninth grade then, probably a little old for it but I also loved the animated Batman series. What I remember from the show was that Conan was portrayed quite differently than in the films. I wonder how that series would stand-up today. Maybe it has aged as well as the animated Batman.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10475027751253870681noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-75694702875510105372013-08-01T17:04:32.359-05:002013-08-01T17:04:32.359-05:00The monkey-man-in-a-cape fight in that room of mir...The monkey-man-in-a-cape fight in that room of mirrors really freaked me out in the 80s, or whenever I first saw the movie. And it still kind of does.

I've read a large chunk of Robert E. Howard's Conan stories (funfact: his nickname was "Large Chunk") and I think enough of it does end up in Milius' movie to be true to the character, but I think the closest representation is the 70s and 80s Marvel Comics written by Roy Thomas and those cool black and white oversize issues of "Savage Sword of Conan" (the had boobs in them!). But Conan is misogynistic and violent-prone, which is still pretty well represented in Milius' movie. I think Conan is cleverer than he is in the movies, though. I love the character of Conan in spite of myself. He's me when I've just woken up, before coffee, when I call women "wenches" and drink mead from a horn. Then I wrestle a serpent (aka, I masturbate because my wife is angry that I've called her a wench) and sit on my throne (aka the toilet) for a long while, pondering my existence and my kingdom. Ah, but that...that is a story for another time...

CREDITS.Heath Hollandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03802874033845631338noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-80232154332472449172013-08-01T16:54:22.236-05:002013-08-01T16:54:22.236-05:00My own experience with these films is very differe...My own experience with these films is very different to yours. I saw Conan the Barbarian when I was about 10. I still remember it quite clearly. They were showing it on TV and I was just getting ready for bed when my dad says he’s watching it and asks me to join him. I had no idea what I was in for and frankly a lot of it went over my head, but I loved the look and feel of the film and have been a huge fantasy fan ever since. Over the years I’ve collected all of Robert E. Howard’s stories and although the character in John Milius’ film is different in many ways I could still appreciate it as a top quality fantasy film and a darn good crack at bringing Conan to the screen.

It wasn’t until many years later that I finally saw Conan the Destroyer, and I hated it at first. It was just far too goofy for me and a huge step down from the first film. Over the years I’ve soften to it somewhat and can take it for what it is. I still wouldn’t go out of my way to watch Destroyer, but if I see it while flicking through the channels I often stop and watch a few minutes.

Also CtD is responsible for one of my favourite pictures ever.
