First of all, I'm sorry to hear about your grandmother. What a difficult situation for your family. I'm glad you found a movie that could help you through it emotionally -- I think a lot of folks on this site (including me) have found that sort of help through the films we love, including genre films, and it's something that brings us all together.

Thanks also for your support of Alloy, I really hope you enjoy some of the poems there. And of course I couldn't write a poem with "ZOMBIE" in the title without quoting Roger! Yeah, one of the saddest lines in cinema for me too... but with something so beautiful behind it, I think. Hope you keep finding the beauty under the sadness in your life, Gregory. Thank you for the kind words, glad you're part of the FTM fan community!janbottighttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00126929026388305201noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-68864941393493081982018-11-04T22:43:32.386-06:002018-11-04T22:43:32.386-06:00I know I'm weirdly late commenting on this, bu...I know I'm weirdly late commenting on this, but I love this piece so much and I've been trying to figure out what exactly I wanted to say about it. Then I realized, obv, whatever I say will fall short of what I mean to say, so I may as well just write something before I let it go so long that commenting feels pointless.

This essay (I'm gonna call it an essay?) actually helped to illuminate why exactly I was so drawn to this movie when I was a teenager and my grandmother was suffering from dementia. Dawn was more or less weekly viewing for me at that time. I'd made the connection between zombies and dementia before because I'm not a total dummy, but your insights about the way that Dawn of the Dead deals with idea of stripping away facades ("his bravado falls away to reveal the guileless boy beneath the surface") and the existential horror of fearing/knowing that we will all eventually be doomed to the fate laid out in front of us are pretty terrific.

The moment that Roger comes back to life has always struck me as one of the saddest in all of film. I can't think of a better illustration of the idea that all of our passion and willpower, everything we think and hope we're capable of, is useless in the face of an indifferent universe. I adore and hate that moment.

Anyway on a happier note, thought you might like to know I ordered a copy of Alloy partly based on how much I love this piece. It arrived yesterday and I've been too busy to dive in yet, but I've read a few poems at random (and ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE BEGINS TODAY not at all at random) and I really love it. The work, while being very much its own thing, sort of reminds me tonally of one of my absolute favorite poets, Jim Daniels. Which makes me happy. :-)

Anyway, thanks for this piece. I can't wait to re-watch Dawn now.Greg Clarkehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01195225611519411348noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-38604562346047833912018-10-31T11:33:27.462-05:002018-10-31T11:33:27.462-05:00It's great, right??
