This might just be Costner's best performance. This is a really special movie. I loved what it has to say about the importance of fatherhood. Clint Eastwood's 90's output, to me, is defined by themes of grey morality, and this film is definitely a part of that wave.Kino Notabihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15852233217962741446noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-7097513583855141842015-02-02T13:46:13.658-06:002015-02-02T13:46:13.658-06:00Great stuff. It's (by my estimation anyway) the best movie about absent fathers and sons I've ever seen, with its portrayals of multiple layers of neglect and abuse. Also, has Costner ever been better than in the scene where he turns on the grandfather who beats his grandson? I didn't hate it but it didn't wow me like it did you, Adam. On hindsight maybe people weren't ready to buy the shady gray Costner and Eastwood brought to their roles, preferring to see them in the roles they expected them to fit. "Unforgiven," which is another movie that's not a clear-cut good guy/bad guy movie, probably got by from the years of western movie goodwill that Eastwood had bought himself for years from his loyal audience. The more recent movie that "A Perfect World" reminds me most of is "No Country for Old Men," a study of people, imperfect and flawed but with some good in them (except for the Terminator-like Anton Chigurh) trying to get by in a world that has left them behind. I guess it comes to director intent. Back in '93 was more humanist, more likely to emphasize the good in humanity versus The Coen's propensity for cinematic nihilism and pitch-dark humor. They'd make a fascinating double bill together.

My new to me movie from 1993 (I'll be doing one a day leading up to Saturday's Film Fest extravaganza): Brian De Palma's CARLITO'S WAY.J.M.
