I really felt like I was playing "tourist" on this one when I saw it a decade ago, and IMPATIENT tourist at that, like "prove yourself movie, you better be amazing". I remember being really surprised it was heavy in the romance department, which I was not expecting from a movie I (I CONFESS) considered "a guy flick" at the time. (And I'm sorry for being so sexist, I am trying to change my perceptions). In fact as I was watching it I remember thinking I must have picked the wrong movie off the Blockbuster shelf. My 20-year-old perceptions about guys back then I'm sure influenced my opinion, and my general distaste for romantic comedies (which I still have) as well. Anyway the reason I like this site is because it's changing my perceptions, which, I definitely realize as I get older, are flawed. The women characters felt really abbreviated to me so I had trouble finding a way into the movie and contextualizing it (that's just me). I wanted to think it was cool because people I thought were cool thought it was cool...but it felt like an inside joke. I didn't judge it, just thought I was obviously not the target audience. I feel like you described the target audience very clearly in your first paragraph, which helps me understand the point of the film. Anyway, I love your writing, it's so fluid and clear!Meredith https://www.blogger.com/profile/11361935408436355904noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-40587844497280595322016-07-28T18:44:10.621-05:002016-07-28T18:44:10.621-05:00Thanks! This is so much a "made just for me" movie that I'm always interested in outside perspectives. This movie speaks to me in so many different ways: ranking everything, not wanting to grow up, fear of putting yourself out there for others to criticize instead of sitting around being critical of everything else. Not only does it push all those buttons, it is endlessly quotable. "She's in the fucking phone book" is something I say even though there are really no more phone books. "I haven't seen Evil Dead II...yet", "Brotha what a night it really was...angina's tough" and I always wanted to walk away from a girl in her apartment while saying "I could have had sex right there" while she's still in the doorway. It's a perfect movie that defines who I am, good and bad.Brent Petersenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17741998097323944343noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-3160422001996421272016-07-28T08:13:03.502-05:002016-07-28T08:13:03.502-05:00Agree wholeheartedly, Rob. That's why it is such a great moment when Barry sings... and the joke it is that it's beautiful and transcendent, not shitty. It was one of those I went into looking to "get it", which people loved so much about it, and left feeling like I'd not seen a movie and not found "it" either because of too much looking for it.
