It wasn't until Perkins appeared that I realized I was watching something special. As much as I can see that Psycho has many other great elements, it's Perkins' performance that makes the movie for me.Solhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03114869401584310369noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-43810344004915778412013-10-14T20:10:27.145-05:002013-10-14T20:10:27.145-05:00During the making of 1998's Psycho, Gus van Sa...During the making of 1998's Psycho, Gus van Sant said, "Anthony Perkins was so great as Norman that it was almost impossible to imagine anyone else but him playing the part."

Yep.

Enter Vince Vaughn.

I have to say that Psycho is one of my favorite films, period. I love everything about it, including the infamous speech at the end.

Anthony Perkins just nailed the part in so many ways that I could never do it justice in words... except to say that Vince Vaughn decided to play it entirely the opposite way and fell on his face.

The black and white photography certainly helped visualize his duality in a way that color could never truly duplicate.

"All killer and no filler."Cameron Cloutierhttp://www.bodianstfilms.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-28408184071087600582013-10-14T13:20:32.172-05:002013-10-14T13:20:32.172-05:00In looking up the awards for which Psycho got nomi...In looking up the awards for which Psycho got nominated back in the day, it perplexes me how Perkins DIDN'T get an Academy Award nomination for his performance as Norman. Janet Leigh did, which is cool I guess, but the omission of Perkins is another example of how the Academy kind of sucks sometimes. Of course I agree that he delivers one of the best horror performances ever.
John Murphyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08810774557887719483noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-1272933820012998552013-10-14T11:49:05.799-05:002013-10-14T11:49:05.799-05:00Great observation-- I have always thought his part...Great observation-- I have always thought his particular line reading strongly suggests he (she?) is quite familiar with a madhouse.JBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17076030814908114779noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-90637113109323075702013-10-14T11:43:17.533-05:002013-10-14T11:43:17.533-05:00A marvelous article, JB. Psycho is one of my all-...A marvelous article, JB. Psycho is one of my all-time favorite films, and Perkins' performance as Norman is indeed a classic. There's a scene near the end where Norman is standing opposite the hotel desk from John Gavin's Sam. The film critic Robin Wood noted that this was like a distorted mirror: Sam is the healthy, normal man, with Norman the twisted reflection.

One thing I've always wondered - in the dinner scene between Norman and Marion, he goes "full mother" after she suggests he put Mother "someplace." His line is: "Have you ever seen the inside of one of those places? The laughing and the tears, and the cruel eyes studying you? My mother THERE?" The way Norman says this strongly suggests to me that he HAS seen the inside of one of the places at some point in his life.Steve K.https://www.blogger.com/profile/02141959251034133806noreply@blogger.com
