French Connection, Exorcist, Sorcerer and To Live And Die in L.A. This is great news.
On the subject of remake, or return to source material, I seem to remember reading a story about Friedkin meeting Clouzot, (who he worshiped at the time)and told him that he was remaking Wages of Fear.
Clouzot's reply?
"Why do you want to remake that piece of shit?"
!!!Ken Prestonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12572724452737194416noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-81836854027080826522013-04-27T14:49:31.306-05:002013-04-27T14:49:31.306-05:00Great read, and I also feel you rightfully so esch...Great read, and I also feel you rightfully so eschewed comparisons to Clouzot's film because quite frankly to me Sorcerer has always been another adaptation of the source material, not a remake and Friedkin did a great job to distance himself from it. And I prefer it to the Wages of Fear but I'd rate them equally.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-15942072660991480582013-04-23T21:07:25.803-05:002013-04-23T21:07:25.803-05:00Hee heeHee heeJBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17076030814908114779noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-34856481021305091912013-04-23T21:06:48.375-05:002013-04-23T21:06:48.375-05:00I did not mention Clouzot's film because I did...I did not mention Clouzot's film because I did not think it was relevant.JBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17076030814908114779noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-26226373379599590342013-04-23T21:05:27.506-05:002013-04-23T21:05:27.506-05:00Thanks, Sol. I think the phantom shot lodged in my memory is actually from All That Jazz, halfway though the "Take Off With Us" number, when the producer behind Schieder says, "They're taking their clothes off!" It's been rumored to be "coming soon" since forever, and as a (mostly) Friedkin fan I want to see it after reading so much about it.

In the meantime, while we wait for "Sorcerer" to turn out in a local movie screening or on home video, why not watch the original French movie that "Sorcerer" is a remake of? I'm surprised that JB didn't mention it in his column, but Henri-Georges Clouzot's THE WAGES OF FEAR (1953) (available on Amazon Prime, Hulu Plus & Criterion Blu-ray/DVD) is a pretty awesome movie on its own right. I don't know about "Sorcerer's," but the original bridge scene in "The Wages of Fear" is fucking tense as hell and the plot (which is basically the same, as are the characters and the overall 'life is cheap' noir feel) tight and uncomplicated. My father saw this for the first time recently (after I left the DVD with him a couple of years back) and, since Clouzot made it a point to skewer American exploitation of the working poor in Latin America (as perceived by the French), was completely floored at both the potency of the political content and the character/action beats. It was one of the first Criterion movies I saw in the mid-2000's that fully turned me into a cinephile, and just a damn good movie in its own terms and merits.

Not to take anything away from what Friedkin and his actors brought to their "Sorcerer" remake, but they had a lot of their work done for them by "The Wages of Fear" already. This might explain why most critics weren't nice to "Sorcerer" when it came out. To them it was an inferior remake of a critically-acclaimed Clouzot movie. So lets seek out "Sorcerer," but also not forget that "The Wages of Fear" is out there and ready for viewing right now. :-)J.M.
