Mostly DVDs come quite reasonably. Plus then you own a film that is at least interesting and worthy of your time. Plus, in the case of "The Swimmer," the sweet bounty of extras put the physical media version over the top and worth a blind buy.

That's the main reason why, as tempted as I am sometimes to buy one, I usually end up passing on the Olive Films that Patrick recommends. Too much dough for an unknown quantity that usually doesn't come with nothing more than a trailer (sometimes not even that) to fall back on if you don't like the movie.J.M. I actually don't know if I am remembering this correctly, but I think J.B you mentioned this movie in passing on a podcast quite a while back. Then got excited that the short story I had admired so much had a film that sounded pretty great. Or I might be loosing it, either way. So I got the film and have watched it a few times. Each time struck by the many levels, as you state, in which it manages to explore really dynamic ideas that still resonate. I wrote about this on my blog last year and remembered what caught me the most on the viewing before I wrote it. That lyrical quality it has as well as the battle between hope and bitter disappointment. This is also reflected in Lancaster's truly remarkable performance. Great article J.B, I now want to watch it again.
