(Caveat: there are a lot of 2017 films I want to see and haven't yet seen.)

Take La La Land. I was looking forward to it. I like musicals. I like Stone and Gosling. I loved Whiplash. All the stars were aligned for me and this film. Alas, my heart did not explode. I like it a lot, it has some amazing stuff, but it didn't hit my sweet spot for whatever reason. Now it's showing up in everyone's top 5 films, it will probably win the best picture Oscar, and I'm left wondering where I went wrong. Why did I not connect with it the way everyone else did?

That's just one example, and maybe it's on me but I dunno... I feel as open as usual to embracing film. Just last year I loved multiple films. I think my capacity is still there. Maybe it's because I saw Batman v. Superman and then never wanted to see another movie again. I think you expressed exactly what makes these movies appealing, and there's no truer statement than "there is something more honest about exploitation than most other movies." Saying "Julie Darling gets me excited about cinema in a way that other movies don't" really speaks to the way I feel about movies myself, that I rarely hear out of other critics, though it mirrors what Tarantino said: ""Even as a kid I knew I would get things from The Girl From Starship Venus that I wouldn't get from the Hollywood films." It's exciting to watch you continue to grow as a movie fan, and super gratifying to see you praising Claudia Jennings and Sharon Kelly in the same column! I strongly, strongly recommend that you check out the movie that Chaybee was championing all last year, She, if you haven't already, as well as the Shaw Brothers movie Buddha's Palm.E.S.A.D.D.https://www.blogger.com/profile/18214282257870634349noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4217427319662074458.post-89232232681156669542017-01-13T08:29:02.924-06:002017-01-13T08:29:02.924-06:00Love this. Regular column, please?!

Your comment about "it takes a different kind of experience to give me a thrill" is one of the reasons I love the genre as well as the Horror genre so much. There is a massive rabbit hole that can be jumped into and so many unknown gems can be discovered if you dig deep enough.

I wouldn't even know where to begin with recommendations, 1. Because I know you've seen a ton, and 2. because - "the rabbit hole". I'll just throw out a few in different subgenres that I watched last year that left an impression: She (1982 - my fav. new to me film), Gang Wars (1976), Night of the Demon (1980 - crazy Bigfoot movie), Dial:Help (1985 - (Ruggero Deodato killer phone movie).Chaybeehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00696179838579647187noreply@blogger.com
