What Movie Are You Still Looking Forward to Most in 2014?

Sorry. Paul Blart 2 won't be out until next year.

The question is pretty self-explanatory. There's only about a month and a half left in the year, but a number of potentially good (or at least "big") movies are still due to come out. Will Bilbo survive The Battle of the Five Armies? (Yes.) Will James Franco assassinate Kim Jong Un? Will anyone actually sing in Into the Woods??

What are you most excited about in the remaining weeks of 2014?

  1. For me it's definitely "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies". "Interstellar" and "The Hobbit" were my most anticipated films of the year.

  2. This is one of those holiday seasons where nothing is a big, huge must-see for me. That aside, I am looking forward to The Interview.

  3. I'm interested to see Foxcatcher. Apparently most if not all of the primary performances are pretty great, and Bennett Miller has a good track record so far. Beyond that, I want to see Inherent Vice because Paul Thomas Anderson, and The Interview also intrigues me.

  4. it's a toss up between clint eastwood's "american sniper" and kirk cameron's "kirk cameron saves christmas"… nothing like right wing politics and/or kirk cameron to brighten your holiday season!

  5. I'm ridiculously excited for Into the Woods. Saw it on stage about a year ago and it was super good, and I'm really hoping the movie is good too.

    1. I am really excited about this as well! I love Into the Woods, and they have a good cast. They filmed here in London so it was exciting to hear about that and to have Meryl wandering around, in my head, just down the road lol.

    2. Me too! We've had a bad run of movie musicals lately (I still shudder when I think of how Les Miserables turned out). I really hope that Into the Woods keeps a lot of the wit and subversiveness of the original work - despite it being a Disney & Rob Marshall thing.

    3. I'm hopeful because they have Sondheim on board...

  6. The Guest, because it never played anywhere near me. Also Inherent Vice, because PTA.

    1. I second JP on both counts. Also the "Unrated cut" of Expendables 3 on Blu-ray, although I don't know if perfection can really be improved upon...

  7. A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, Why Don't You Play in Hell, The Babadook and Starry Eyes are the big ones for the rest of the year for me. Most of the others I am excited for it seems like won't get a NA theatrical release until 2015, if at all.

  8. Was looking forward to seeing Devil in the White City....but I'm not sure if the project was scrapped. Loved the book, but I have a feeling the movie would be mostly about HH Holmes and not nearly as good as Larson's book.

  9. Inherent Vice because PTA and The Hobbit 3. The extended cut of Desolation of Smaug really improved on the awful theatrical cut, so my optimism for the series has increased immensely.

  10. "Inherent Vice," "Interstellar" and the last "Hobbit" movie, though I'm not really looking forward to anything until I see it. I just saw the trailer for "American Sniper" though, and if the movie is even half as good as the trailer it'll be a must see Christmas movie for me.

  11. The Editor, Der Samurai, Creep, Faults, Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films and Free Fall. Saw The Guest tonight and loved it!

  12. I'm kind of leaning toward Big Eyes aittle mostly because Walter Keane was quite the master level dipshit.

  13. Inherent Vice and possibly American Sniper are easy answers, although Eastwood's recent directorial history makes me leery. But since no one has mentioned it I'll go with Exodus: Gods and Kings. It's the type of movie I usually enjoy, features a great cast and a director that can do fantastic word under the right conditions.

It will be interesting to see what sort of liberties Scott takes with the source material. I'm also intrigued with the casting of Aaron Paul, since it doesn't seem to be the type of role he would normally get.

    1. i would argue that clint eastwood's now overt, pathological, right wing point of view would inform the material and the viewing audience to, if nothing else, a very interesting movie. hopefully he hasn't become *too* senile, and will find freedom in this and become more daring and forthright with his directing. that's my hope anyway. i still don't agree with his politics, but one can't deny his talent.

  14. Inherent Vice and American Sniper are the two movies I'm most looking forward to. The Gambler and The Interview look interesting too, not sure if I'm going to catch those in the theater though. Wish I could say I was excited for Hunger Games or the Hobbit, but I'm not, those will both definately be Redbox movies sometime in April.

  15. Surprisingly I'm looking forward to the Hunger Games even though it's part one of two.

  16. I finally was able to see The Guest last time, and I loved in. In my top five this year, I am not sure if the ending makes much sense, when you think about it, but the movie as a whole was great (with many unexpected twists and turns). I did like the ending though, don't get me wrong; I just took a "wait a minute" approach to it. Oh and I also wanted to mention the one bully Luke beats up in the classroom probably gives the worst performance I have ever seen.

The soundtrack was pretty psychedelic as well, which isn't very surprising, since the same was true for You're Next.

One other thing I wanted to say is that isn't it strange that mediocre comedy sequels are getting sequels these days. Not only Paul Blart, but was anyone really asking for Horrible Bosses and Hot Tub Time Machine sequels? I mean the first movies were passable I guess, but nothing I'd ever want to see again. I guess they're easy cash grabs, but it seems to be becoming another lazy trend in Hollywood. Next up the long anticipated Tower Heist 2!
