The reason Funny People was unsuccessful is because it was marketed as a funny Adam Sandler/Apatow movie. Therefore, the opening weekend viewers were people who were expecting to see a traditional Sandler, Apatow, Rogen, and Hill type of comedy. It wasn't that, so they told their friends that it wasn't funny. Word-of-mouth is much more persuasive than critic reviews and that's why it 'failed'.
