Watchin' Trailerz with Doug (Week of March 14)

It's been a crazy week here at F This Movie! Our Twitter feed is blowing up (just over 100 followers is good, right?), and Patrick's lists are more popular than ever (LEPRECHAUNS!). Unfortunately, due to some technical glitches, we were unable to post this week's podcast until today, which means this blog post will be sharing space/time with a discussion about Galaxy Quest. The podcast, OBVIOUSLY, is way more important and essential to the site than some stupid weekly roundup of dumb trailers, anyway, so let's just lay to rest any notion that I might, in some small, petty way, be bitter. I'm not bitter. Not at all. Share and share alike. That's an expression right? So, please, enjoy both this shitty summary of movie previews AND Patrick and JB talking about aliens. Attack the Block

I vividly remember when I first "discovered" Da Ali G Show. It was last week. BOOM! Just kidding -- it was in the early 2000s, probably shortly after the first season of his HBO show came out on DVD. ANYWAY, when I first watched it, I was so completely impressed that my head LITERALLY (not literally) exploded. Sacha Baron Cohen is one of those genuinely "brilliant" (overused word, but I sincerely think it applies here) comic artists. Like Andy Kaufman, only funny. I watched those episodes ad nauseam, and pretty much forced everyone around me to do the same -- my friends, my mom, my dad (may he rest in peace), my girlfriend at the time (may she also rest in peace) ... everyone. Then I saw the eponymous movie, Ali G Indahouse, and, boy-oh-boy, was that ever a giant piece of poo. Regardless, my affection towards the character was pretty steadfast. I even liked (and still like) Borat ("I like" -me, now), and to a MUCH lesser extent, Bruno. However, the whole "thing" quickly became trendy and popular. I never felt that the show "jumped the shark," but I did definitely feel some angst towards those idiots around me who wouldn't stop quoting it. Just like in high school when you "discover" a band, only to resent them later when they achieve commercial success, which is really rare and good for the artists (because now they'll be able to make more music and, you know, EAT), and we SHOULD feel happy for them but we don't, because we feel like we've been somehow ... left behind? You know what I mean? You know what I mean. Aaaaand ... what the heck was I talking about? Oh, right, Attack the Block. My point is this: it's been a few years since I watched Da Ali G Show, so I think I may need to watch this movie with subtitles when it comes out. Booyakasha!

Is Tom Hanks playing a sweetly retarded character again? Look, I loves me a good romcom. I'm a big proponent of Return to Me. Likewise, I know that, when a movie like this is done right, it can have a huge impact on those who see it (see: Exhibit A, Patrick and Erika; also: Exhibit B, Notting Hill). But this movie looks lame. Like, they're not really trying that hard? Julia Roberts hates her life. She wants to cancel class and drink a lot (Bad Teacher, anyone?), but this big dork forces her to teach, and then ... they fall in love? I will probably see it, but only because Tom Hanks is a pimp. So great. So Hanks.
