F This Movie! - Napoleon Dynamite

Patrick and Alex are called into action by listener request to feed the llama, defeat the liger and climb up the ass of Jared Hess' Napoleon Dynamite, a movie that's already way too far up its own ass.

  1. Don't know why it said Unknown on my first comment. I'm not trying to hide.

  2. Haven't heard you muster this much contempt for film yet. It makes for a very entertaining listen.

I'm hoping that your interest in "Drive" leads you guys to F it. That is a film that warrants further discussion.

I agree with your comments that it doesn't bring anything new to the genre. It strips the heist/revenge thriller down to its bare elements, then injects more style. Which with most movies would be a criticism, but there is something about this film.

There are so many things in it that on their own shouldn't work, but they do. I don't buy Ryan Gosling as a tough guy, I don't buy Brooks as a gangster, the main "Hero" song is too pointed, the constant slow-motion pushes the precious envelope, but I wanted to watch it again as soon as it was over.

  3. I'm probably overreacting when it comes to Napoleon Dynamite. It's not the worst movie (I think we were meaner to THE BOONDOCK SAINTS, because that's the worst). I think it's just a case where I feel like the emperor has not clothes, so I want to shout that as loud as possible.

I don't think we'll have a whole show devoted to DRIVE, but I'm pretty sure it will come up a lot during our year-end retrospectives. You're absolutely right -- it's a great combination of elements that work together in the right way. It's definitely one of my favorites of the year.

    Thanks for listening and commenting!

  4. "The podcast that sucks" -- oh man, you really know how to open a negative podcast! That had my chuckling right away.
