Weekend Weigh-in: What Are Your 2013 Movie Resolutions?

2012 is almost over, and we are no longer wearing pull-ups. It's time to start planning for next year.

Going into 2013, what are your movie resolutions? I, for one, would like to continue in my attempt to clear out the over 350 movies in my Netflix Instant queue, and to see more silent movies. I would also like to finally see The Perfect Weapon starring international Kenpo champion Jeff Speakman. #movieresolutions

How about you guys? In a year, we can check back and see how everyone did. Think big! Believe in your dreams!

  1. I really hope to have made a few short films that I can be proud of in this upcoming year. Along with that, I think I'm with you, Patrick, about checking out The Perfect Weapon. It looks pretty awesome. HA

    1. I've seen it, you two are setting yourselves up for some serious disappoint. It's not bad (I howled watching a young and green Mariska Hargitay in the thankless 'girlfriend' role, plus Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa shows up to get his face bashed) but if you want to see sweaty people breathing heavy while "I've Got the Power" plays in the background just put on "Do The Right Thing" and save the $22+ (!) Olive Films is asking for a bare-bones Blu-ray of a pretty generic early 90's action vehicle for Jeff 'Who?' Speakman.

  2. I'm seriously thinking of 'cutting the cord' from cable (which is crazy because "Dexter," MSNBC in primetime, "Big Brother After Dark," TCM Imports, 12 channels of HBO/Cinemax, PPV Boxing, etc.) to force myself to watch the movies I own. At the very least I want to sneak in one new-to-me movie per day in 2013, which is crazy because work/life/stuff gets in the way of just the regular stuff on TV.

The other resolution I want to sustain is not be suckered by sale prices into buying 3D movies I wouldn't want to see if they were in plain ol' 2D. Ever since I got my 3D HDTV I'm surprised how much tempted I am to buy stuff like "The Green Hornet" (no thanks, "Green Lantern" was bad enough), "Bolt," "Paranorman," "Rio," "Prometheus," the last two "Resident Evil" and last "Underworld" movies, etc... all because they're on sale and they're in 3D. I've resisted so far and only bought 3D stuff that I'm sure I want to watch like "Hugo" and the last two "Harry Potter" movies (need to watch the first six "HP" movies, which I own on HD-DVD and BD, to get to the point where I can watch "The Deathly Hallows Pt.1/2" in glorious 3D) for 15 bucks a pop. "Mars" may "Need Moms," but I don't need a 3D movie that bad to give Zemeckis' bomb a serious thought... yet. :-P

  3. 1. Do 50 pushups and run 1 mile for every movie I watch in 2013
    2. Watch more classic and independent movies - using VOD, TCM and movies playing at the Music Box as a guide
    3. Watch all of the movies in the DVD combo packs I own...I swear I buy them and they are almost all unopened
    4. Participate in more movie podcasts with my friends...done a couple and they're a lot of fun.

  4. I am resolving to go out and see more movies in the theatre this year. There was a time I went at least once a week, now I`m lucky to do it once every few months. I`ve been so caught up in blu-rays and home-theatre viewings that I`ve neglected seeing movies the way they`re REALLY meant to be seen. Not to mention I`m always behind on the conversation - e.g. I had to avoid everything The Dark Knight Rises until less than a month ago - not fun or easy!

So Future Sol, when you come back and read this you better have gone to the theatre more often this year. Also, please don't come back in time and try to kill me (not that I've actually seen Looper yet)!

  5. I'm with Tall Hot...I used to go to the movies on a weekly basis, now I'm lucky if I manage to get to a theater once or twice a month. I didn't get a chance to see The Master until its very last show at the last theater near me playing it (and there were no theaters within hundreds of miles showing it 70mm), and I missed Cosmopolis completely (it played a grand total of one theater within 100 miles of me for exactly one week). That's the first time I've missed new Cronenberg in a theater since M. Butterfly, and I'm disappointed that I still haven't seen it.

Those are sort if extreme examples, but I missed a lot of easily-accessible movies I wanted to see just because I didn't make the time to do so, so I'm gonna try to manage that time more productively. At least I got to see Cabin In The Woods twice, both times with (mostly) appreciative crowds.

  6. Sol and JP, you guys are breaking my heart. Last year I made the same resolution you guys are making now after I had a dickens of a time coming with a Top 10 because, frankly, I had barely seen 40+ new movies in theaters including repertorie. The fact JB bragged on the 'Best of 2011' podcast that he'd seen 150+ movies in theaters just rubbed salt on the wound.

So this year, as of 12/29/12, I've seen 43 new releases in theaters and 41 repertorie movies, 84 total... and the year ain't over yet. Not on the same league as Patrick or JB (nobody can touch these guys!) but a nice reminder that movies were meant to be seen on a big screen in a dark room, not on your apartment with the traffic noise from the window (an imperfect but necessary evil).

    1. I know, I know, it's a sad story. I certainly bought at least 84 movies this year, but it really isn't the same. Need to start shifting my movie-related disposable income to the theatre where it belongs! I won't let us down, Vargas!

  8. Maybe not a resolution but I have GOT to stop thinking that just maybe this time they turned a Broadway musical into a decent movie.

  9. Oh...and I also resolve that if I should ever become a movie actor that I have to get Benedict Cumberbatch's agent.
All we get is a vague shape and a noise and he gets his name in the credits twice as the Necromancer? That's some good deal making.

  10. Read the book before I got see the movie based on the book...starting with Warm Bodies. (Un?)fortunately, I will be having a child in April so seeing movies in theaters will be a luxury few and far between that year...sorry Gatsby, Star Trek, Iron Man 3, Thor, Hunger Games....

I guess then I resolve to watch all those movies sitting my Netflix queue and utilize Redbox more.

    1. Congratulations, Jessica! Please name the baby Patrick. Or Doug. REGARDLESS OF GENDER.

      That's great news!
