  1. Haven't heard the full podcast yet, but just wanted to touch base on one aspect.

Diablo Cody did a rewrite on the initial script. Because she did not contribute more than a 50% change, her name is left off the screenplay credit (though she did get paid, of course).

Another reason why the producers did not have her rewrite everything is they knew if her name was on the finished film, a great many people would not see it or hate on it from the get go. Look what happened when initial reports came in that she was doing the rewrite.

BTW, I love "Bed of Roses". The trailer made for it is one of the great ones, especially since several shots/lines of dialogue do not appear in the finished film.

I will say this though. The film feels like the script was written like a full novel, but then the movie was edited down into a tone poem or short story. Would love to see the longer cut.

I am so mad about the "Carrie" remake trailer. I was on board when I saw the first teaser and heard they were going to tell the story like the novel, ala testimonies. That being said, the trailer shows this film is clearly made for no one. What a waste of talent.

But then I am still upset that Kimberly Pierce took an amazing true story for "Boys Don't Cry" and watered it down to take out all the complexities.

I agree, J.B. and Adam. "Pump Up the Volume" is amazing. I first saw it when it played as a double feature to David Lynch's "Wild at Heart" during the summer of 1990.

    1. Pump Up the Volume and then Wild of Heart? That's an awesome double feature! Patrick asked me after the show for my favorite Dern and Wild at Heart was my pick. Coincidences, right?

  2. I'm so glad, Adam, that we share a love for "the movie that shall not be named," but I suppose I will quit drooling over it too, at least until it comes out on Blu Ray at the end of the month. Then all bets are off.

J.B., I'm curious, what are the other two movies you think give the best portrayals of high school?

The Carrie remake breaks my heart. It seems to be so unneeded, and I hate to see an actress like Chloe Moretz, who, for the most part, I like a lot, doing something completely wrong for her. The trailer certainly doesn't give me much confidence. Horror remakes in general piss me off. As you guys pointed out, I'm on board if they are like The Fly or The Thing or Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Those movies add so much to their source material or comment on particular current issues of the times in which they are made. It sounds like neither Evil Dead nor Carrie (though, to be fair, the latter remains to be seen) will buck that trend of filmmakers missing the point of remakes.

    1. I love "the movie that shall not be named" with all my heart. I've just mentioned it in SO MANY columns that I feel like it's time to let it go for commenting on the site. It's like, enough already Riske, we get it! I would totally love to read any of your comments on the movie. I'll just nod in silence.

  3. I think you guys forgot to make fun of one of the stupidest lines from Evil Dead. After Mia shoots her brother in the arm with a shotgun, his girlfriend says, "I have tweezers in my purse!" Thank god this blond has tweezers in her purse, because despite having a demon that will end up killing everyone directly or indirectly, this chick can take out a bullet from this guy's arm. Cue the applause.

  4. Just listened this morning. Good times. I saw Evil Dead 2013 on Friday night and again Sunday night... I was a little drunk for the second showing... It is amazing what lower expectations and whiskey can do for a movie going experience.

    Fucking Hangover 3: Fuck Yeah!

  5. This episode was SO FUN. You guys spun what sounds like a mediocre movie into a great podcast.

Adam's line about how Tina Fey won the Mark Twain prize (she's sleeping with Hal Holbrook) deserves some sort of cash prize. Lightning fast and genius.

Also, I love The Devil's Rejects and I love Adam's assessment of it. Dead on.

Also, I'm convinced you guys were doing cocaine off the DVD box of the original Raimi Evil Dead through this whole episode. No judgement, I just wish I'd been there for a couple of lines myself. SO MUCH FUN. Did I mention this episode was fun?

  7. It was a great episode guys. I saw the Evil Dead remake a couple nights ago and originally I walked out thinking "that was alright" but after listening to your podcast I reflected back on my time with the film and wow it's gone from "that was alright" to "most of this damn thing was dull and sucked".

The whole opening scene seemed to be completely disconnected from the rest of the movie almost like a "previously on Evil Dead" which was annoying as hell. Also I didn't like the fact that they felt the need to set up a "way" out for the characters. I liked Mia in the movie but I wish they had found a way for her to be saved that wasn't telegraphed to the audience. The way Ash gets out of things in the original Evil Dead was a bit of a surprise and is one of the many things I loved about Evil Dead.

A couple positives I did appreciate the practical FX use in the movie and the last few minutes with Mia was pretty cool but it was too little too late. Also it was nice that they didn't have yet another demon pop up at the last second toward the screen, an annoying trend that seems to finally be dying off a little bit as the recent horror movie Mama didn't fall into it either.

Lastly, JB is absolutely right about the actor playing Mia's boyfriend being a "CONTEST WINNER!". I'll be in Chicago next month and if this should happen at the movies I will give you a shout out.

  8. Sorry, I'm only a minute in and before I go any further, I just have to say that JB's laugh at the heroin line was one of the greatest things ever.

    1. Yes, I tend to have an obnoxious laugh when I think something is honestly funny. My wife used to call it the "high laugh."

  9. I had one additional thought go through my head I wanted to share. How much fun would it have been if instead of just seeing them use a nailgun to fix the door in the cabin, if they had also found and used a bunch of other stuff from the toolshed like a mini Home Depot. Chainsaw, hammer, etc. It would have kept things more surprising that's for sure. But then again we could play the "This would have made the movie a lot better" game all day with Evil Dead.

    1. That can be the most frustrating kind of movie -- the one that's a handful of changes from being something passable, if not downright good. I think part of the problem with Evil Dead is a question of tone, which is a harder thing to correct, but you're right -- there are changes that could have been made that would have made the movie much more enjoyable.

  10. I've got a friend - and he does this just to bug us now but he's partly serious - every time we talk about watching an "older" movie that we really like and recommend to each other, he asks, "Is there a remake of it I can watch?" He's one of I think many people (and I used to be one of them) who have a hard time getting past the look and feel of older films. Hollywood knows this and, it would seem with horror movies especially, remakes have proven to be an easy way for them to make a quick buck. I just did a quick look at the box office results for remakes of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street and they all PROFITED 10s of millions of dollars. Another one of those situations where the consumers are as much to blame as the producers.

I just watched the original The Evil Dead a week ago and liked it a lot. Some of the early reviews for the remake led me to believe it might be worthwhile, but based on your pre-spoiler reviews on this podcast I'm going to pass and not add my 12 bucks to their box office haul.

Fun podcast guys - shame the movie wasn't.

P.S. I just saw a tweet that they are remaking "Point Break". W...T...F?!

  11. I saw it this morning by myself in a completely empty theater and I'm almost shocked at how unengaged I was through the whole thing, despite the lack of any distractions.

I will say that it feels pretty great to see a movie (even a movie you don't like) and then get in your car with your friends Patrick, JB, and Adam (whom you've never even met) and laugh along with them and nod in agreement for an hourlong discussion of the movie you just saw. Everyone above who commented on the amount of fun this episode was was spot-on. Also, Hollywood's right, that Hal Holbrook line was genius.

  12. As Patrick knows i own over 50 versions of the original. So I am a massive Evil dead fan. Knowing about this my childhood nostalgia being toyed with actually made me feel sick. Isent anything sacred. So of course I had to watch but I was full of dread and the wrong kind of dread.
But I have to say my expectations were that low that I really enjoyed the movie. Ive now seen it 4 times and I now feel the first 30 mins is too much talk and exposition but then the final hour is entertainingly non stop. The original is still the best but this could of been so much worse I now actually have a fondness for it. Jane levy was superb. The practical effects were great. Watch it late at night loud and it does its job rather well.

  13. This is one of your funniest podcasts so far. Listening to you riff on the movie is really entertaining. I actually enjoyed the movie for what it was (a bad movie with lots of gore; I've actually seen it three times now, embarrassingly enough) and I still found you guys fun to listen to--although you haven't dissuaded me of my opinion, so I guess you didn't do your job! Just kidding. Thanks for making my work day that much better, and I hope my comments don't get annoying!

  14. FInally, three and a half years later, I have seen the Evil Dead remake. And, as a huge fan of the original series....I liked it a lot! Shiloh Hernandez (who?) is a stiff but Jane Levy is really damn good I like their take on the material a lot.
