Watchin' Trailerz with Doug (April 12)

As a father ...

Elysium
Release date: Aug. 9, 2013

This is the big trailer this week, and I know fanboys across the interwebs are a'freaking out. And that's fine, because the movie will ultimately be good, because Neill Blomkamp. But, can we be serious for a moment? What the heck is going on in this thing? Between all the quick cuts and shots of cyborg Matt Damon juxtaposed against Stepford Wife Jodie Foster, there's really nothing that, I dunno, gets me excited. Kind of reminds me of Cloud Atlas, which is a good movie, but which also had a confusing trailer (justified, as Cloud Atlas is a confusing movie). Again, it'll be great -- I have no doubt -- but for those out there mindlessly foaming at the mouth for this preview, RELAX. Final thought: Earth looks like stock footage of India? AmIright? AmIracist?

Rush
Release date: Sept. 20, 2013

Three fathers are brag about sons. "My son is Niki Lauda. He best race car drive man. He survive fire crash and race again." "Zo?" second father say, "My son is also race care drive man. He have all potato he want!" Third father wait long time, then say, "My son is die in crash. For him, struggle is over." Men agree third son have best life. But all are feel sad.

The Way, Way Back
Release date: July 5, 2013

This smacks of "indie cool," which normally turns me off. HOWEVER, it looks kinda great, and the addition of Sam Rockwell (no brainer) and a genuinely nerdy protagonist (not some sort of Andrew Garfield, "Oh, I'm such a nerd, as demonstrated by my excellent social skills, moves with women, perfect hair, charming mannerisms, stellar academic record, razor-sharp wit and weirdly shaped head" pseudo geek) who I can root for seals the deal. It's odd that Steve Carell is still finding his cinema voice. He's tried shy/awkward. He's tried social misfit. Now he's trying complete asshole. And NONE of these portrayals work. Why were you so good on The Office? Why are you so bad in movies?

Greetings from Tim Buckley
Release date: April 23, 2013

I don't know what a "Penn Badgley" is, but I am a fan of the late/great Jeff Buckley. And while this preview doesn't quite light the fire in my belly that it should (IMHO), I'm still intrigued, as his is a story that should and needs to be told. "He's probably the most talented singer/songwriter I've ever murdered, and I once devoured one of the Temptations, so that's really saying something" -Wolf River.

Filth
Release date: TBA

This trailer is rated R, presumably for nudity, sexual content, language, drug use and for being the MOST BRITISH THING I'VE EVER SEEN. Avert your eyes, children.

Java Heat
Release date: May 10, 2013

Kellan Lutz is in this. Honestly, aside from a vague memory of once hearing his name, I really had no idea who Kellan Lutz was. I had to IMDb him, and I found out that he's in the Twilight movies. So there's that. We have thaaaat. ALSO, he was Frank in Stick It, a movie I deliriously saw on E! this week with my wife and daughter late one night, as we struggled to make sense of time and humanity. Turns out, Stick It is not the worst movie in the world! Aaaand, if you haven't lost all respect for me, here you go. YOU'RE WELCOME. Back to Java Heat: GARBAGE, despite Mickey Rourke reprising his role as Ivan Vanko in Iron Man 2.

  1. Part of me is very enticed by Rush. I love Le Mans (1971) with Steve McQueen and racing documentaries. (Champions Forever aka The Quick and the Dead, Senna, Faster, The Road Racers) But most racing films come off pretty crappy, Days of Thunder et al.

  2. And you can sign me up for Greetings From Tim Buckley. I was not aware of this movie, but now that I am, I'm interested. I'm always down for a story about a great musician, whether it be a fleshed out biopic or just focusing a specific point in their life.

  3. Definitely looking forward to The Way Way Back. I love Carell but I am with you Doug he has had some trouble getting into movies. The only two things from him I have enjoyed are Anchorman and Dinner with Schmucks (yeah I am the one guy here who actually likes that movie.)

Damn can Sam Rockwell be any cooler? He almost makes me want to get a job at a water park.
