  1. Still listening to the podcast, and I don't know if you were serious about this, but I wanted to express that I would totally be excited for a podcast on the movies of 1999. I thought maybe that would be a good year for the next F This Movie Fest, but I would LOVE to hear a regular podcast with that theme. I'd finally get some good Fight Club discussion (something I legitimately want to hear)! Of course, there are tons of great movies from that year.

  2. I really should see this movie; I feel it's the one parodied in Not Another Teen Movie that I've never seen.

BTW, following over from the last podcast and the subject of 1999, Fight Club had a horrible ending then and it's worse-feeling now.

    1. Do you mean the "twist" or do you mean the final shot? Because I've never loved the twist but have always liked the last shot -- though I certainly understand how it would be worse-feeling now, if that's what you're referring to.

    2. I actually mean the entire third act, which feels so bungled and inept in comparison to the opening and middle section as to piss me off inordinately. But god, those first two acts are brilliant.

  3. I actually really like Sneakers. It along with Wargames are cult films among the computer security geek crowd/industry. Sneakers is one of only a few movies that shows hacking (penetration testing, social engineering etc.) more or less accurately. Though the end is a little hokey many of the ideas and plot points are actually quite prophetic when viewed today.

  4. Nice; looking forward to listening to this! I hope a proper John Hughes teen movies ep isn't too far behind. :)

  5. We can all agree that John Hughes is the king of "The Teen Movie", right? Sixteen Candles is a solid start, followed by The Breakfast Club, which is kinda amazing. I know it's sorta dated but I love that movie. I'm with you guys on Weird Science, it's not very good (it's pretty easy/fun to watch, though). Ferris Bueller is probably John Hughes' best movie (rivaled only, really, by Planes, Trains and Automobiles, which...I love that movie). But Ferris Bueller has always been kinda boring to me. Does anyone else feel that way?

I agree it's probably John Hughes' best but, I don't know. I love all the stuff with Sloane, Cameron and Ferris but all the other stuff with the sister and principal is hit or miss for me. I do think, however, that Some Kind of Wonderful is a great movie. I know it has some "iffy" lines ("You look good wearing my future." I actually like that line though) but it's a better Pretty in Pink (which is a pretty UGLY movie. Not in content but just aesthetically, it's not a great movie to look at is what I'm saying.

P.M.S: I just saw The Lone Ranger and White House Down today (literally like 3 hours ago) and I really liked both of them. The Lone Ranger is totally messy but also very fun. I also liked picking out the not-so-subtle references to much better movies(Sergio Leone/John Ford westerns. Even Hans Zimmer's score [which I liked a lot] was very derivative of Ennio Morricone). And, watching it from Mr. Riske's perspective makes the movie seem smarter than it, probably, really is (or maybe not, I could be wrong).

White House Down was also very fun. The "pen debacle", which you brought up in your review, Patrick, is THE worst. James Woods brings it up twice in one scene to make sure you heard it and yea, Jamie Foxx saying, "I choose the pen!" was awful. I also hated the "flag twirling debacle". SO BAD. But, other than those 2 things, the movie was perfect...No, i'm kidding but it was very fun (but TOO LONG. Why is that movie 2 hours and 17 minutes? WHY DOES RICHARD JENKINS BECOME A VILLIAN AT THE END?!?! THAT WHOLE SUB-SUB(a sub-plot to a sub-plot) PLOT COULD'VE AND SHOULD'VE BEEN CUT!). Also, the CGI was pretty bad in spots. So I guess it wasn't great but I enjoyed it.

    Sorry for the long-ass comment...

  7. That idea of revisiting random movies from the past to compare to current movies is a great idea (Sneak(er) Attack). Maybe an "On This Day in XXXX" movie watching/review could become a thing in some way.

  8. The reason there weren't any teen movies in the 70's is that we weren't as obsessed with our own navels as later generations.

We got movies that were either the start of the slasher/zombie genre, the end of the comedy skit compilation movie or that were trying to sell us a soundtrack album (Tommy, Saturday Night Fever, Sgt. Pepper, American Graffiti, Friends, Liztomania...)

  9. Patrick, I completely agree with everything you said about "Get Over It!" or "Getting Over Allison" as it was originally called.

The good parts far outweigh those unnecessary diversions.

I, myself, have never seen "Can't Hardly Wait". I remember reading that the film had first gotten an NC-17 by the MPAA so I was horrified when it was finally released as a PG-13.

I figured I would see an unrated cut on DVD, but that never happened--so I just skipped it altogether.

(I did the same when "All the Pretty Horses" was cut from 4 hours to 2 without Billy Bob's input.)

I kinda want to see it now because the cast is so well known, but I hated a lot of the teen films that were coming out at this time, so I think if I do, it will be viewed as a mere curiosity.

    BTW, "Empire Records" does bite...

  10. Sweet podcast as usual guys. Sad to hear that Lone Ranger just couldn't grab you the way it did some of us Patrick, oh well. As for your guys opinions on Can't Hardly Wait I will agree there a couple decent things in the movie it is indeed fast food but unlike my occassional fast food joints like Mcdonalds, Panda Express, and Chick-Fil-A; Can't Hardly Wait is my Arby's and the only thing on the menu I kinda like is the Curly Fries and I am not going out of my way just for those.

Slightly off topic, I actually wouldn't mind it if once in a great while, perhaps on a slow movie week, you guys did a podcast on a tv show. You guys brought up Freaks and Geeks a lot which is my all time favorite one season wonder shows and it would be great to hear a podcast on that. While there are definitely a bunch of awful tv/reality shows there are a handful that are damn good (check out Hannibal you'll be pleasantly surprised)

Also note about Avatar received Doug!

  11. Just started listening to this and wanted to test my new Avatar that Doug peer pressured me into setting up.

Also, that was MY ritalin joke - jeez, you guys start getting a bigger fan base and forget all about the people who were with you since Day...I dunno...500 or so (Fall 2011).

    1. Hey, I don't have to prove I'm not a robot anymore - I should have done this ages ago. Thanks for being such a demanding jerk, Doug!

    2. That was just me being lazy and not wanting to check. SO SORRY.

And we can all clearly see your JAWS: THE REVENGE avatar.

    3. That robot thing is temporarily disabled. It may come back depending on the influx of spam. Sorry about that.

    4. Crap, I get all sweaty and nervous every time I get grilled about being a robot...NOT because I'm a robot or anything hahahaha. Ha. Hey - look over there!

And I'll let the joke thing slide THIS TIME - from now on though you really should stop the podcast, read through the comments and make sure you're giving due credit to my hilariously cogent remarks.

      Also - avatar fixed.

    5. Bah, that sucks - I'll have to play around with it.

    7. Strangely enough, as I was going through some old posts to figure out when I started commenting here, I JUST read one where you said that exact same thing...are YOU a robot?

  12. I feel accomplished that I was ahead of the curve in using an avatar, but my avatar is just me. Maybe I should make it something movie-ish since all I do is blog and comment about movie stuff. Maybe I should make an Avatar avatar. That seems both appropriate and humorous.

  13. Since I was in high school when all the late 90s teen movies came out, I watched most of them. I think "10 Things I Hate About You" and "Can't Hardly Wait" were my favorite. I thought "She's All That" was pretty mediocre, and "Drive Me Crazy" was the worst.

Hearing the podcast, I side more with Doug. Yeah, it hasn't aged well like so many things in that (Quimby voice) era, but I like the performances(Ambrose, Green, and Facinelli's especially). Jennifer Love Hewitt's acting has never been great, but I believe her as the "unattainable" beauty(her hair and makeup choice didn't bother me like it did for you guys).

The tags at the beginning and end suck. The movie would had a more emotional impact if the end tags were gone and the viewer was left to wonder what happened next.
