  1. Good job guys - funnily enough I just watched Top Gun for the first time in its entirety AND in 3D (cuz that was necessary!) this past weekend and it was the most amazing movie featuring the Top Gun flight school and Tom Cruise that I've EVER seen! Fun fact: At Top Gun there is a $5 fine for anyone who quotes Top Gun. Same as at my house! Actually I kinda liked it but mostly in an ironic hipster kinda way (though I do get a legitimate boner for the F14 Tomcat) - it's just so 80s. I also like how they have no qualms playing "Highway to the Danger Zone" over and over and over again - this is the song we think represents this movie and goddamn it we're going to beat you over the head with it!

As for your field correspondent - look, I don't know how to break this to you gently...I'm pretty sure he's a Disney (not Pixar) mole. And not one of those cute Disney moles from Disney's Moles, but a cute Disney mole like from that TV Show "The Mole". He's infiltrated your incorruptible show to try to generate positive buzz for Planes - I hate to see you guys dazzled by a pretty face and a silver tongue - he must be stopped.

  3. Great episode again guys. Doug is killing it with these games. He's really good. I mean reeaaaalllly good.
That field correspondent made me feel like I was really there. I believed a boy could fly. Planes!

  4. About halfway through the episode, I was thinking "are they going to forget Air Froce One? Are they even going to mention it?" Because I don't love that movie, but it does feature a plane and all("Get off my plane!"). Fortunately I could breath a sigh of relief toward the end when it was at least mentioned.

That is the cutest correspondent I've ever seen, but I think he may be a bit biased and possibly lacking in experience with his opinion, just saying. I did enjoy his impression of the planes.

  5. Doug's costume designer is the best. I'd also go out on a limb and say that Airplane! is the best airplane movie ever.

  6. I am very appreciative of your red velvet-curtained clarification, because when Doug said "P-57 Mustang" my immediate thought was, "I MUST log on IMMEDIATELY and SET HIM STRAIGHT as to the PROPER name for the MUSTANG!!! I CANNOT allow Doug to go through LIFE thinking he is CORRECT about this!"

    So thanks for that.

And your field correspondent is clearly a Disneybot. They have come so far with audio-animatronics...

    1. I think I knew the moment I said it that it was wrong. When I watched the playback, I was embarrassed. As a lifelong aviationerd, I'm glad THE MANAGEMENT set the record straight!

Also, the plane in Airplane! was a 707, not a 727. Apologies!

    2. Didn't want to say anything about that 707, thought it would be rude. Like Steve said, life can be rough for aviation nerds.

    3. Too much pressure to be right/be funny! I failed at both.

Awesome! For those who are interested, the Internet Movie Gun Database is also very interesting (the section on Die Hard alone is fascinating). They also have a TV section, for those who want to read about Sonny Crockett's Bren Ten.

  8. That adorable little boy deserves his own column, no? This website (and podcast) needs some youthful spirit thrown in, no? And judging by the boy's taste, he's perfect for the site, no?

But in all honesty, Patrick, assuming that is your son (and I think it's an apt assumption because he looks like a huge Phantom of the Paradise fan-as he should be) you gotta show him some quality movies ASAP. He can't like Planes! No matter how young, he needs to have some semblance of good taste, no?

I don't know, maybe I'm wrong (I'm not a parent so I'm probably horribly misguided in my opinion).

  9. Hey Doug, no love for the John Milius epic "Flight of the Intruder"?

    2. Cool as a Jewel.

It's a somewhat cheesy movie but entertaining. Plus my flight instructor flew A-6s, so it is cool to seem them on screen.

  10. Great Video.
Plane Movies: What about Spielberg's: Always. I recently watched it for the first time and despite one really bad performance, strange story, and weird old-fashionness (it is a remake) I still found myself being oddly entertained, and enjoying it.

    1. Several 'Always' jokes were left on the cutting room floor (next to 'Air America' and 'Stealth' bon mots).

There's just not enough space to fit in all the cleverness! /sarcasm

  12. Quick response to Matt on Always while on a whole the film is a dud I thought the plane sequences through the forest fires were done really well, gotta admit if I see that movie is on cable and it's near the end I'll stick around for it.

As for good airplane movies, while I will admit that it technically stars rockets I believe The Rocketeer fits in this category. Its got all types of planes and a rare zepplin movie appearance and The Rocketeer is awesome.

Quick note to Doug your Avatar is coming to the big screen this thursday with Rifftrax (the MST3K guys) doing a riff on Starship Troopers, of course I am not sure what the gang here thinks of them, personally I find them a riot most of the time, great episode guys.

    1. Regardless of how I feel about Rifftrax (I don't really have an opinion), I can't imagine how that Starship Troopers thing will be. You can't really make fun of that movie, because the movie will always get to the joke first. Making fun of it suggests that you don't get the joke, and then you're the on who ends up looking foolish. But I say that not knowing what they have in store.

  13. Aside from the wasted opportunity to finally show us the artist's rendering of The Haverick another great offering. Always worth checking out whatever you guys are up to.

  14. Great stuff as always, and you've got a real eye for "man on the street" talent! Also, be honest...the real reason you've made the move to video is to get us all to covet Patrick's t-shirts, yes?

    (Also his Gilmore Girls collection)
