Watchin' Trailerz with Doug (Sep. 6)

This is one of the best trailers I've seen in a while. Careful: it's rated "R." #DadJokes

Neighbors
Release date: May 9, 2014

I'm kind of disgusted with myself for featuring a trailer for a movie that won't be released for eight months and three days, but Zac Efron, so whatever. This red band (implied nudity? Crude humor?) preview is actually pretty funny (up until the last stupid CGI airbag joke). It's weird to think of Seth Rogen as a.) married to Rose Byrne (I'll file that under suspension of disbelief), and b.) playing the responsible adult part (I'll file that under holy crap! This actually makes perfect sense because Rogen's in his 30s, and of course he should have a wife and newborn baby!). The cast looks great too, and includes Lisa Kudrow, Jake Johnson, Dave Franco and Christopher Mintz-Plasse (who I actually kind of can't stand, but Zac Efron, so whatever).

Kill Your Darlings
Release date: Oct. 18, 2013

WHAT'S IT SAY ABOUT ME ... that I am less distracted by Harry Potter playing Allen Ginsberg than I am by the bartender from Northern Exposure playing a college professor in the '40s? It says that I have all my priorities TOTALLY FIGURED OUT. Srsly, though, I'm impressed with the post-Potter projects (P!) that Daniel Radcliffe has chosen (as well as Emma Watson!), specifically because he seems to be finding a career that's distinct from the J.K. Rowling universe. So, good for him? I'm sure that's what he's looking for -- approval from the most sarcastic/least qualified member of a small, Chicago-based movie blog. Also, this looks pretty good.

Release date: Oct. 1, 2013

Documentary about safety innovations throughout Formula 1's history, narrated by Michael Fassbender. Could make for an interesting companion piece Senna, one of the best docs I've seen in years.

Under the Skin
Release date: Aug. 29, 2013

Looks like SOMEBODY (ahem, director Jonathan Glazer) saw a few David Lynch movies in film school. And because I saw a few stolen cell phone pics of Scarlett Johansson, I'm not complaining. This is barely a trailer, and IMDb categorizes the movie as "Sci-Fi." Yeah, sure. Intriguing, and a little up its own ass.

Blood Ties
Release date: TBA

NSFW language (and some quick violence), because international (see: France) trailer, so headphones up! What can I say? Great vibe, great photography, great cast (including two of my favorite alien fembots), great music ... so, great? This is a movie about crime in America that feels distinctly French, and I'm OK with that.

  1. Dude! The new Robocop trailer dropped today and it's not featured in your column?! It looks SO GOOD - huge improvement over the original by the looks of it - the big robot looks badass and now Robocop can like jump really far and shit. This is what the original wanted to be I'm sure. Also, someone hit me really hard in the head with a brick this morning but I seem to be doing just fine! Scrabble! Eggrolls!

Good slate of trailers actually - these all look more interesting than most of what I watched this summer! I see what you mean about Under the Skin having its head up its ass but my hopes are kind of up for that one.

    1. Truth be told (THIS IS HOW SAUSAGE IS MADE), I write my columns late on Thursday. And that asshole of a trailer had to go and be released LITERALLY an hour after I submitted my piece (eww).

I watched it though, and I ... might feature it next week? Maybe not, because I can't think of one interesting thing to say about it.

Hey Sol, thanks for #doingdougsjobforhim re: ROBOCOP.

    2. Heheh - I figured as much - you're forgiven because I love sausage.

  2. I've read Under The Skin (excellent novel) and that trailer actually fits it pretty well, as well looking like it's a trailer for a lost 1970's movie like The Clonus Horror. Which, again, fits the novel.

That new F1 Doc looks great! If you enjoyed "Senna" try to get your hands on the 1978 F1 doc "One By One" aka "The Quick and the Dead" aka "Champions Forever". Probably my favorite of the genre.
