The F This Movie! Lost Episode: The Exorcist

This one got wrecked. Twice. Blame it on Pazuzu.

Patrick here. Erich Asperschlager and I recorded a podcast on The Exorcist for #ScaryMovieMonth. It was pretty good if I do say so myself. Unfortunately, a malfunction with the recording software lost most of the conversation. So, like FUCKING TROOPERS, we rallied and recorded a BRAND NEW hour-long conversation about The Exorcist the very next night. We were determined.

That one got ruined, too.

What remains is what could be salvaged from the two shows, which have been spliced together. It just cuts off at a certain point mid-conversation. Sorry about that. In our over three years of doing the podcast, this was a first.

Thanks to Erich for being great and giving two podcasts' worth of intelligent insights into a horror classic.

The Exorcist will never have a full podcast as long as this site exists. It is now F This Movie! law.

Enjoy what's here. I'm sorry.

Or download the episode directly here, as it will not be available in iTunes.

  1. If it wasn't Pazuzu, it was probably Wishmaster that got in the way.

  3. The power of Christ compels you..to release this episode regardless of technical difficulties. It's great, despite the problems! Good recovery, I still really enjoyed this!

  4. Thanks to Patrick for sifting through the rubble and posting what he could. I had fun chatting about the movie despite the problems. Then again, one of my hobbies is pushing a heavy boulder up a hill over and over again.

I still think we should check with the NSA to see if they recorded it...

  5. Just starting this but have a quick question. Mike gave some specific instructions at the beginning of this podcast:

    1. Sit back. Check!
    2. Relax. I'm at work so that's a little harder, but check!
    3. Strap it in. Um...I'm not sure what this means but the implications are disturbing to say the least. If you mean what you think I mean, I haven't had to "strap it in" since my last high school dance, but that doesn't seem right so some clarification would be appreciated. Thanks.

    1. Mike's instructions got cut off. He should have said "strap it in and turn it on." I apologize for the confusion.

    2. I was still a little confused so I googled "strap it in and turn it on" and then I got fired. Yet another life destroyed by F This Movie!

    3. Oops! My fault. Should have been "strap it on and turn it in"—a reference, of course, to strapping books to the back of your bicycle to transport them back to the library when they're due.

    4. You're right, Sol. I should have refrained from listening to this episode until I knew what exactly I was supposed to strap in. What is it?! I'm so confused!

    5. Before every White Sox game the TV announcer says, "Sit back, relax and strap 'er DOWN" which I tried to steal for the intro. (For the record, I'm not sure what we're supposed to strap down exactly) When I heard it this morning I thought, "Well, I fucked that up. At least no one will really pay attention to what I'm saying." Damn you, Sol. Damn you.

    6. Ok. Its strapped. Now what? Ow, its pinching. Quickly guys. I think the circulation is being cut off. Err, is it meant to turn that colour? Oh. Oh god. So light headed. I think... i think I'm going to. ...*thud*

    7. Ha! Sorry Mike, I just can't help but hang on your every word!

Brad - it sounds like you did everything right - I guess my robust Canadian constitution was just able to stave off unconsciousness.

  6. Surprisingly great episode given the technical difficulties, which I really only noticed from the cut-off ending. In particular, Erich's line about Patrick's skepticism of him seeing a black dog was comedy gold.

I need to watch The Exorcist again - I saw it for the first time just last year and it was another one of those classic movie situations where my expectations were set impossibly high and I ended up underwhelmed. I thought maybe it was because I'm so not religious, but it sounds like Patrick is in the same boat and still found much to value in it, so I'm definitely going to give it another shot. I often find I can appreciate a movie like that much more on the second viewing.

Not sure I can squeeze it into my plans to watch Survival of the Dead (ugh, but must complete franchise), Hatchet III, Cabin Fever, An American Werewolf in London, The Howling and Fright Night (1985 of course) though - could we extend SMM by a day or two? Somehow I'm nowhere near the point of exhaustion with it this year...

    1. Seconded.
Although my "to watch" pile that isn't horror is by getting quite big.

  7. So...you guys know how I got all freaked out by The Lords of Salem? All that religious stuff deep inside my brain? I've never seen The Exorcist because for the same reasons. When I was a kid, there was a woman either in my church or somehow in my childhood periphery that claimed she had been possessed by a demon while watching The Exorcist. I no longer believe in actual demon possession (though I do believe in mental illness and the crazy things our brains can do to us if we let them off their leashes), but I lived in abject horror of this movie for about two decades. Which is a problem, right, 'cuz it's only a movie and the message is a good one anyway. But because of all that baggage, I'm not sure I'll ever be able to see The Exorcist with anything other than terror at my OWN demons from childhood. So, thanks, organized religion. you've taken the joy from something else.

And I'm just saying, Patrick and Erich, the reason you had so much trouble with this podcast is because of the evil you were discussing. The devil sabotaged the Skype recorder. OR Jesus took the wheel because you needed to be stopped.

    1. I hope you give the movie a chance someday, but I think your fears may be justified.

  8. In my opinion this was one of your best shows. I really dug the serious film analysis and treatment of this picture.

    1. Thanks, Tom. You would have LOVED the actual full show. Either one of them.
