Watchin' Trailerz with Doug (Jan. 17)

I'm not the biggest fan of the Muppets, but I'd be lying if I said the two recent Twitter-themed trailers for their upcoming Muppets Most Wanted weren't really funny. Well done, Henson's ghost! #Muppets4Life #YOLO

Don Peyote
Release date: May 1, 2014

Totally weird and poorly edited trailer for Dan Fogler's new passion project, Don Peyote. Honestly, I normally wouldn't feature a low-rent preview like this -- and not just because it's nonsense -- but the movie costars some A (but mostly B) list actors/celebrities, including Anne Hathaway, Josh Duhamel, Jay Baruchel, Topher Grace and Wallace Shawn (inconceivable!). Why are they appearing in this student film? I have no idea. But kudos to all involved, as I'm sure it will delay Folger releasing all those compromising photos.

Doomed: The Untold Story of Roger Corman's the Fantastic Four
Release date: TBA

Documentary about the only film famed low-budget auteur and B-movie producer Roger Corman made and NEVER released, 1994's The Fantastic Four ($2 million WASTED). This could be a really interesting look at the behind-the-scenes decisions that ultimately kept the movie from being released, full of intrigue and scandal. Or it could be just a bunch of almost-famous talking-head "actors" recounting their experiences making -- what appears to be -- a giant piece of garbage movie. You decide! According to IMDb trivia, " Stan Lee said that ... this movie was never intended to be released, and it was made only because the studio that owned the rights to make a Fantastic Four movie would have lost those rights if it did not begin production by a certain date." #TheMoreYouKnow

The Unknown Known
Release date: TBA

Jeebus! Now THIS is a documentary. Master storyteller Errol Morris profiles former U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, discussing his career in Washington D.C. from his days as a congressman in the early 1960s to planning the invasion of Iraq in 2003. And the results are terrifying.

Million Dollar Arm
Release date: May 16, 2014

SPORTZ! I guess at 43, Jon Hamm's too old to be the baseball player, so, instead, he's the agent recruiting inexperienced cricket players from India in a last-ditch attempt to salvage his crumbling career. He's all, "SHOW ME THE MONEY!" And the three fresh-faced Mumbai pitchers are like, "You had me at 'hello.'" And then they all drink Canadian Club. Typical Disney fare here, so expect an underdog story, a man realizing that there's more to life than money and an uplifting ending. Also Lake Bell, who looks hot in a sari.

Draft Day
Release date: April 11, 2014

SPORTZ! Listen, I know that last trailer had you salivating for a Kevin Costner-esque sports drama ... and I'm just glad I could deliver. Whereas Jon Hamm can no longer play the athlete, looks like Costner can no longer play the agent. He's leapfrogged directly to GM of the Cleveland Browns. And he's gonna make some CRAZY PICKZ! Or will he? Remember when Ivan Reitman made Ghostbusters?

Maidentrip
Release date: TBA

Another (ANOTHER?) documentary, this time featuring a 14-year-old girl who sailed around the world. Alone. In the preview, the protagonist, Laura Dekker, says, "I definitely prefer sailing for school." YOU THINK? If Robert Redford can do it, so can a rich Dutch girl.

  1. I love how excited those Twitter-themed trailers for the Muppets movie have made me despite the fact that they have absolutely nothing to do with the movie.
