Weekend Weigh-in: What are Your 2014 Movie Resolutions?

And will you be keeping them?

If you watched this week's video, you know that I resolved to watch a bunch of classic movies from my collection this year. What are you resolving to do movie-wise this year? It doesn't have to be a movie you plan to see. It can be anything! Then next year, we can check back in and see how well we did. Assuming our ant overlords say it's ok.

  1. I don't have any particular selections in mind for this yet, but I think I'm going to make it a point to watch more non-American movies that are either highly regarded or I hear get recommended a lot. I am a big fan of Asian cinema as a whole, for the most part, so I think I'm going to start there. For example, I heard Patrick recommend Drug War quite a bit, so I'm about to check that out, and I've also never seen The Man From Nowhere in its entirety, so that seems like one I want to hit, as well. I'm sure I'll look through movies that have either won or been nominated for the Best Foreign Film Academy Award and check those out, as well.

I don't know if this counts, but there are also a bunch of Japanese animated movies I've never seen that seem like they would be worth checking out, like Akira and Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke and Grave of the Fireflies, so I'll probably give those a go this year.

    1. John,
May I recommend the Korean film "Memories of Murder" (2003). One of my favorites in the crime/detective procedural genre. Probably one of my top Korean films. I have brought it up a few times on these comments but I don't know if the "Guys" have seen it.

    2. Probably half the films I watch are from Korea and Japan. Once I got into their cinema I was hooked. So I hope you enjoy the journey.

    3. Awesome, that sounds very much up my alley. I'll check it out. Thanks, Tom!

Oh, I think I'm already hooked, but I'm always looking to find new and good things I haven't seen. I appreciate the suggestion.

    4. Cool, I would like to hear your thoughts on it once you get around to seeing it.

    5. I'm tracking down MEMORIES OF MURDER right now. Thanks for reminding me.

    6. Just a hint, it's available on YouTube. I've started watching it, and I'm not done yet, but I'm liking it so far.

  2. I base most of my classic film viewings on JB's Better Yet columns and this book I have called "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die", and I've been slacking lately with the latter. My resolution is to get through two new titles a week in order to have checked off 100 by the end of the year.

I know you guys are being coy, but I for one welcome our insect overlords.

  3. I resolve to ignore the speculation and hype surrounding the huge summer releases this year in an effort to avoid the soul-crushing disappointment of yesteryear.

I also endeavour to exert more self-control and stop listening to the spoiler sections of the podcast until I've seen the movie. That resolution also applies to reading the Wikipedia article before seeing a movie.

I also want to sit through all of F This Movie Fest this year - even if I have to get up at 2 in the morning to do so.

  4. My resolution is to work on my screenplay, watch movies that have been gathering dust in my DVD/Blu-ray collection, and burn off the movies on my DVR(Damn you, TCM and free HBO/Showtime/Stars weekends!).

    1. What is the movie sitting on your DVR that you are most excited to watch, and which one are you dreading the most?

    2. I'm probably most excited to watch Stoker(because Chan-Wook), Red Beard(because Kurosawa), and The Great Dictator(because Chaplin). I'm probably dreading watching The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey because as a fan of the other Lord of the Rings movies, I'm afraid it's going to be a HUGE letdown.

  5. My resolution is simple: clean out my Netflix queue. I doubt it will actually happen, but a guy can dream, can't he?

  6. I have too many movies in my DVD collection that I've never watched. I have decided to work through those, and at least give them all a try. Of course, then my wife bought me the Zatoichi boxset and I've been working my way through those first.

  7. My resolution is to try to watch more movies at home without getting distracted. Too often I'm watching a movie and I think "hey isn't that the guy from Leprechaun in the Hood?" or whatever and then it's off to imdb and my attention wanders from the movie and onto whatever tiny glowing screen is nearby (I reiterate this only happens at home, phone stays in my pocket at the movies).

  8. Late to the party as usual but I'll echo thereeljames and Grey Weirdo - so many Netflix movies to get to and WAY too many movies in my collection I haven't watched yet.

Last year I resolved to go to the theatre more and got out to 18 - not a lot by some people's standards but as someone who had all but given up on going out to the movies and was only going to 2 or 3 a year, I'd call it a success! Hope to beat that record this year.

    1. Sol, I am right there with you. Though like you I am a huge movie fan, I usually only get out to an actual theater once or twice a year. In 2013 I actually saw eight films in the theater. Each time I went it was like I forgot how much fun it is so I went more often.

So this year my movie resolution would be to see more in the theater, but especially take advantage of seeing films at the AFI. I live within easy drive of the AFI Silver (am a member) but very rarely going over to check out festivals and special engagements. This year I should try to make it once a month.

  9. While I watched a lot of old TV with my free time, I basically just watched movies I got to review from the Verdict. This year, I'm going to force myself to watch 1) many of the movies I bought over the years and still haven't watched, and 2) many of the movies that've been clogging up my Netflix list for the past few years.
