Jupiter Ascending was a mess plot wise in my humble opinion. However, I ended up liking it overall though. I would love to know Patrick's thoughts on Jupiter Ascending when he eventually sees it.
Excellent recap. Other future movies of this year not mentioned that I am excited about to one degree or another:Spectre (I'll see and be excited for any new Bond ever)Inside Out (I firmly believe this will be a redemption for the Pixar downhill slide as of late. Hopefully I am correct)Bridge of Spies (A Spielberg directed, Coen Brothers co-written movie is SO intriguing to me)
You mean the Bond movie that will have Sir Christopher Lee singing a rock opdra metal song for its title sequence? Has any heard Sir Chris sing? I'm guess Mendes hasn't or thinks he is being ground breaking. Either way I wa t to see that title sequence
The Olletta sounds like a Character from Quentins new film, The Hatefull Eight ;)
Hey guys, great podcast. In general, movies need to gross double the amount of their production budget to break even. Jupiter Ascending cost $176 million and needed $352 million just to cover costs. It only grossed $182 million, therefore it lost $85 million. It makes no sense that media publish what movies gross, if they lose money, whats the point? Highest grossing movies? Why would anyone want to know that without knowing how much it cost.So "It Follows" will make more than "Jupiter Ascending" in the theater. It would be better to have "It Follows" on a top ten list for 2015 and not list top grossing.
One that I'm really keeping my eyes out for is Sicario, the new film coming from Denis Villeneuve. It stars Emily Blunt as an FBI agent and sounds from the plot synopsis like it's going to be in the vein of Prisoners. It's my #3 most anticipated movie for the year behind Star Wars 7 and Knight of Cups (shameless Malick fanboy here). Mad Max should be in there somewhere too, but I just don't know enough about it and I didn't love the originals.
I'm also eager with anticipation for the release of VIOLETTA, which I was surprised to see you leave off the "Also discussed in this episode" list.
Emily Blunt as FBI agent. Sold
Of couse the Violletta bad guys have purple blood, beacause they're all Klingons! #shareduniverse #crossoverappeal
I saw the Spongebob movie and actually really enjoyed it. It is wacky in a good way and a lot of fun, silly not stupid. I have to admit I saw Second best because of my desire to try support any British movie if I can. It was so offensive to me in just about every way. But especially for trying to exploit my huge affection for Dame Maggie Smith. Just no. Not cool. On the subject of cool British movies do you guys get a release of Shaun the Sheep? Totally should start a kickstarter for Violetta. I remember your Side by Side episode, I really liked the discussion. Also the Chappie breakdown is one of the best things. I think it will affect the way I hear South Acrict accents for a while.
I need to listen soon only because I want to hear how you felt about Annie. My girls made me sit through this one and surprise, surprise I did not hate it.
I'm one of the few people who didn't like It Follows and it sucks when you're the odd man out on a movie like this that everyone is loving. I thought the basic concept was cool but once you find out what form it takes and how slow it is when it comes for you, I just didn't find anything about that scary and since only one of the group of friends is in danger at a time it made the stakes very low for me. I was mostly bored by it and even if I saw the movie before all the hype I still wouldn't have enjoyed it much. I liked the atmosphere and the soundtrack was one of the best I've ever heard, but other than that it left me very cold. I wish I liked it more and it's frustrating that I don't.
On the Paul Blart cop 2 question, the Reason Patrick should watch it is other the Your Conseince holding a good to your head that you gotta see everything in the pictures, you gotta see it so I can read you review so then I dont have to see it, your doing it for us ;) On Get hard, when JB said he had seen it I actually stopped what I was doing, and took an intake of breathe, wow, thats commitment to film, im not that committed to see Get hard Ps I Still have the Chappie meltdown as my ringtone
"Gun to your head" damn typos
Your Side by Side podcast is probably my favorite of your podcasts!
Hey GuysI love your podcast. I write this comment to recommend a little flick called Chappie. You might have heard critics wrecking this movie. You might have even heard JB go on an epic rant regarding the inflection and tone in the main characters voice. My opinion on the movie differs from those of RT's critics and JB's earholes. I really enjoyed the movie. It may have something to do with me not being american, nor speaking english as my first language, that I wasn't annoyed by the thick south-african zef-dialect.It may have something to do with me liking tributes and references in movies, that I enjoyed the obvious sci-fi robot callbacks. I liked the morally ambigious characters that incompentent yet endearing and the thoughts the movie promted in me regarding the difference between creator and god as a human construct. In fact I think I just really liked the movie. There you have it. My own little rant. I'm not trying to change anybody's mind. I just hope I could make more people see this movie with a fresh and open mind Regards Mathias from Denmark
I kinda liked it too. Let's start the fan club, yo!
My daughter loves the new Annie. I tried to show her the original but she just couldn't relate. After being exposed to it everyday for a few weeks I kinda get it now. I do think it's a good modernization and the music is better. Funny so many people resent it outright because of nostalgia for something that wasn't very good to begin with. But maybe my kids will say the same thing about a remake of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Then I'll just let a giant boulder run me over.
Agreed. I thought the ways it updated the original seemed organic and not like pandering, and the music was handled really well. I still don't understand what Cameron Diaz is doing (every C&C Music Factory joke makes me cringe), but it's a movie I don't mind my kids watching a bunch.
I love Sia so I was pleased that I enjoyed the updated songs as much. Agreed with Diaz but I really ended up liking it much more than I thought I would. Plus my sister is completely crazy for it.
Yeah I haven't really had a great time if it this year. Nothing really came out in January, and I had major surgery in February so I haven't got out to the theater as much as I would like. The stuff I have seen has ranged from good to just the worst (lookin at you Taken 3) so that's something of a disappointment, especially considering the highs of last year. 2015 carried no momentum of great films from 2014 apparently.
Hope you're on the mend, Tim.
I certainly am, thank you JB. On the mend with the movies as well, since I just saw EX MACHINA earlier today. There's hope for 2015 yet.
Love hearing you and JB chat about films!Something I wanted to get clarity on. You had mentioned that Jupiter Ascending had a budget of $180 million and made $180. However, based on everything I've heard or read in order for a film to be profitable it needs to earn 2.5 times it's budget (on average). The multiple is due to marketing and cost of showing the film in theaters which isn't included in the production budget. By that calc Jupiter Ascending would need to earn $450 to break even. Thoughts?Lastly, I've been pretty pleased with this year. Here's my faves so far this year:A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHTMOMMYKINGSMANIT FOLLOWSSPRINGLOST RIVEREX MACHINAHere's what I'm looking forward to off the top of my head: Mad Max, The Duke of Burgundy, Hateful Eight, Star Wars, Hunger Games (sorry, kind of a sucker for these).
I have spent watching movies that came out during the holiday season that are just making their way to the cheap theater. Hopefully summer will bring some better stuff. I hate that I'm not looking forward to the Avengers 2 as much as when I saw the first trailer. Every other trailer that comes before a movie or on television just has me less exited. I feel like I've seen the whole movie. Mad max, Hateful Eight, James Bond, and Star wars are my big hopefuls. I'm also getting more turned off by each new Jurassic World trailer.
