Weekend Open Thread

It's true. All of it.

I'm guessing there will be some talk about The Force Awakens this weekend. That's cool. Two quick things: 1) we will be posting a podcast on the movie on Monday, so you'll have plenty of time to talk about it if you'd rather wait and 2) please be sensitive to SPOILERS if you do plan to discuss it. Not everyone will have had a chance to see it yet.

Also, The Road Chip, everyone. Don't spoil that shit either.

  1. During a friend's school assembly on Friday the guy onstage loudly and boldly yelled the big twist in TFA to the entire school.

    Fuck that guy.

    1. Just a heads up, I was browsing Reddit today and some dick had his username as the spoiler. Proceed into internet land with caution if you care.

    2. Aww, that sucks, I was even very conscious coming out of the theatre not to talk about the big spoilers and ruin it for anyone going in. Though, of what I would call the two main spoilers, both are pretty easy to see coming and there's a lot more to love about the movie than particular plot points.

    3. I'm frustrated that despite there being so many awesome and interesting things about TFA, the only things people are talking about are the pretty predictable plot twists and the, like, two mcguffins it shares with ANH.

    4. Yeah, I'm not worried about spoilers for TFA cause I'm not that invested. But still, that's a dick move and I know there are a lot of people who care therefore I wanted to give a heads up.

    5. I had the FTA awakens spoiled for me while checking an NBA box score Friday morning. I'm not too upset, because it's actually what I thought was going to happen, but come on. Thanks a lot, internet.

    6. I read online a idiot shouted out the spoiler as he left the cinema and was then beat up by people in the queue, what a asshole

    7. If he was beaten up, he got what he derserved, I think ;-)

  2. With all the fuss about the new SW movie, let us not forget the true masterpiece in the saga, The Backstroke of the West.

It's a pirated copy of Episode III, with a bad Chinese translation that was then translated back into English with software. And it's hilarious. Copious amounts of screenshots can be found here.

  3. Just watched Maximum Overdrive yesterday (followed of course by a second watch with the FTM commentary). Boy that movie's bad. And kinda funny. I couldn't stop laughing at the title card at the end.

  4. I just saw a new "Road Chip" trailer on TV. The entire thing is Star Wars themed... Do they think that will get people to see it?

  5. Saving my comments on Star Wars for the spoilery podcast. Already seen too many jerks spoiling it online. At least this site can be considered a pretty safe place.

  6. Sicario is good, but might be the most over-hyped and over-appreciated film this year. I thought it was fine. No performances stuck out nor the story or cinematography (and I love Villeneuve and the great DOP, Roger Deakins, btw).

    1. That's basically my thoughts. I was let down. I want Villeneuve to do something else weird, and art-house like Enemy.

    2. I have to disagree with you there. I thought the movie looked beautiful and was very well shot, not to mention Emily Blunt and Benicio Del Toro were both great. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

    3. I'm with Murphy, "Sicario" is awesome from top to bottom. At least it didn't waste Deakins' masterful DP skills on the forgettable "Spectre," who chose instead to lense a good movie that's actually worth watching more than once.

    4. I thought it was well shot but I also thought "The Kingdom" was well shot. I love Del Toro but he wasn't doing anything special out of the norm. Same with Blunt, she was great but nothing special. As I mentioned, the whole movie was great but nothing Oscar worthy or special.

    5. Let me take that back, the movie was fine, not great.

    6. Yeah I had a similar thought when I saw it recently. I liked the acting, and the movie was gorgeous, but there didn't seem to be anything overtly special about it. The "twist" didn't feel like a twist, and the story in general was just fine. Definitely not a bad movie, but not amazing to me.

    7. Yeah, it's a good movie, but it ain't THAT good.

    8. I never said it was Oscar worthy (who cares about that anyway?), but I did enjoy it a lot. Blunt was great in the apartment confrontation scene and Del Toro in the interrogation scene.

    9. My whole post was based on the "Oscar" argument. Fuck the Oscars, agreed, who cares, but there is a lot of talk about Sicario being Oscar worthy, hence, the reason for my post.

  7. Waiting for a weekday to see The Force Awakens on a big IMAX screen at the local science center--even though the theater swapped out its 70mm projector for digital earlier this year. (Noooooooo!!!!!)

Saw Sicario again for the first time since opening week. What stood out the most this time was how well the story flows from scene to scene. Not sure it is the best movie of the year, but it is probably my favorite.

Streamed the documentary The Armstrong Lie. The film makers started during Lance Armstrong's 2009 comeback, and added a good portion of footage after the doping scandal broke. It is an interesting shift in perspective.

About to watch The Fog of War...

  9. Anyone have opinions on the Star Trek Beyond trailer? Here's mine: woof.

    2. I hope we're just lacking context for the motorcycle stunts and shitty one-liners.

    3. Ditto. I wish they would have at least made a different song choice for the trailer. What, is Sabotage the Star Trek anthem now?

    4. Funny how many shots of Pegg we got in a movie written by Pegg, isn't it?

    5. I can't think of a scenario where I'd be okay with a dirt bike chase in a Star Trek movie. It reminds me of those dune buggy scenes in whichever Star Trek movie had terrible dune buggy scenes in it.

    6. Honestly, I like the trailer. I liked it because it looks new, different and weird. Yes, it doesn't look like traditional Star Trek. But it sure doesn't look like a remake of an old movie (*cough*intodarkness*cough*). I like the practical make up, and it just looks like a really fun time. And I'm sure that song is just there for energy. Whatever. I doubt it will be the anthem through the film.

  10. Don't think it's "spoilery" to ask this...what's with someone handing a lightsaber to someone business-end first?

  11. As for trailers, I'm surprised nobody here has talked about the Independence Day Resurgence trailer. The original was goofy & fun but just like Man of Steel, the new version has to be "dark and super serious" for today's audiences. In other words: "Nolanized". I'll pass on it.

    1. I'm interested for 2 reasons - 1. Emmerich came back to do it. 2. Will Smith didn't.
