It's the weekend. You guys know what to do.
I wanna get everybody's opinion on the Ghostbusters trailer. I'll start by using a Patrick quote cause I think this is going to be the majority opinion- "It's Fine". I thought the jokes fell flat, the ghost looked ok, and I'm confused to if the original Ghostbusters exist in this world cause it some parts it seem like they did and in others not. I don't know if anyone else felt this way but I thought it had too much of a Men In Black style if that makes sense.
First I'm going to get the obvious caveat out of the way here and say that of course this is just one trailer and opinions can change when we've seen more. That being said, nothing here made me look forward to this at all except for Kate McKinnon who looks like she's in a much better movie than anyone else.
I said it on Twitter during F This Movie Fest also, but I have no idea why anybody would want to remake Ghostbusters because it essentially forces a comparison with the original and I can't really think of any director right now that would be up to that challenge. If you're going to remake a well-loved movie, there needs to be some sort of raison d'etre, and I'm just not seeing it here. If it's just mostly the same story but not as smart or funny then they're really remaking Ghostbusters II as opposed to the first one.
After Bridesmaids, which I enjoyed but have never felt the need to go back to, Feig's work has become almost the textbook example of "It's Fine" for me. The Heat and Spy were entertaining enough movies but had completely left my head within an hour of leaving the theater.
I was going to say that of course I'll watch it because nothing else comes out that week. Then I just double-checked and saw that a musical called La La Land is coming out that week also, written and directed by Damien Chazelle (Whiplash), and starring Emma Stone, Ryan Gossling and J.K. Simmons. I'll still watch Ghostbusters, but it might be the second new movie I see that week.
Right I don't think any of us are not gonna watch it. I actually think Paul Feig is one of the most overrated directors working today. I think he gets somewhat of a free pass because he makes comedies with a predominant female cast.
At least not in theaters. There's always netflix and when curiosity strikes! I'm not going to be super negative about it. I wasn't looking forward to it and this trailer was pretty bad. I was weirdly disappointed though. I guess I had kind of hoped it would surprise me and look awesome because Ghostbusters. Oh well too many movies I have genuine interest in get released every year for me to waste the time/money to go out and seeing this. I did kind of like the look of the ghosts though!
I honestly hope the movie itself is much funnier than the trailer would suggest. I got barely a chuckle out of it. Personally, I feel there is great potential with that cast and Feig as the director, but I'm just not seeing it here.
I'm now less excited for it than I was before I saw the trailer, which is a bummer. The humor I love in the original Ghostbusters movie (and the sequel, to a lesser extent) is very dry and often deadpan. "And the flowers are still standing!" The humor in the trailer seems really ostentatious and appears to call a lot of attention to itself instead of being part of the atmosphere, which I don't equate with this franchise. We don't need another Melissa McCarthy comedy where she's doing "that thing" again, do we? But hey, it's just a trailer, so I'm still trying to be cautiously optimistic. It could be that this is just not aimed at me. But then again, I love Ghostbusters, comedy, and Kate McKinnon, so I feel like it is.
I actually felt more interested in the movie than I had been before. It doesn't look like McCarthy is doing "that thing", in fact it seems like she's doing an actual part, a scientific and somewhat stiff person (same goes for Wiig). This makes me suspect that the trailer is the marketing department's best attempt at making it look like Bridesmaids when in fact it probably isn't. Shouldn't be. Probably ain't. Given how little of the story and the characters the trailer give away, I think chances are the movie could still be pretty good.
Hey guys. Have you seen this new fan edit trailer? It gives you the feeling you wanted from a Ghostbusters movie, maybe the problems aren't the film, they are with a badly made trailer that isn't well put together and also feels like it shows the whole film, I really enjoy watching this trailer, the original left me kinda empty
Yep, I'm getting a "Its fine" feeling from it too. That being said I think the movie will be better then Ghostbusters 2 but nowhere close to the original. I really hope there are some practical ghost effects in the movie but considering Feig's complete lack of history in that area I sincerely doubt it.
Very true Tom, and let me just say this, if you put 4 men in the role with the exact same dialogue, it's still not that funny. So this is not about an all female group, even though I'm afraid that if the movie is not successful it's going to be played that way, that the world still isn't ready. Give me a break.
I watched Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story yesterday. Not much to report there, but the commentary on the DVD is hilarious. It's Stiller, Vaughn and the director bickering and fighting for half an hour until they storm out and the technicians put on the commentary for There's Something About Mary for the rest of the time.
There's also the "original ending" where the bad guys win, and the director says he really fought to keep it in and how it's "artistically the right way to go", but the studio interfered and forced him to shoot another ending.
Did anyone else think all the cgi in the ghostbusters trailer looked off and excessive? I just saw London has fallen. What a garbage movie. All I wanted was a couple exciting action set pieces, and it couldn't even deliver that.
Continuing my tour of "recent movies probably everyone else here has already seen," I recently saw Interstellar. Like most Christopher Nolan movies, you could nit-pick it to death if you wanted to - and I don't particularly want to. I thought it was great, flaws and all. And that Hans Zimmer score might be the best thing he's ever done. Interstellar has whetted my appetite for mind-bending sci-fi. Up next will be 2001 (don't panic, I have seen THAT one before), and Solaris (the 1972 Commie version). Any other suggestions?
I really love Interstellar. I think it's focus on how incomprehensible the universe is to humans is really interesting coming from a director so focused on explaining concepts.
Primer (2004), The Frame (2014), Predestination (2014), Coherence (2013), Time Lapse (2014), Triangle (2009), Timecrimes (2007), The Signal (2007), Moon (2009) Sunshine (2007) etc...
I understand the criticisms that people had with Interstellar, but I have such a great time every time I watch it. Something about it's message and construction just works for me. I also sob like a baby every time I see the scene where he watches the messages from his kids.
Did anyone not hate This Means War from 2012? I'm pretty sure I would watch Tom Hardy in anything. I watched Dark Shadows and, like T-Hard, I'll watch anything with Eva Green. It's not a good movie but far from the worst movie ever made. It's at most, like, the 20th worst.
Fun note for anyone in the Orlando area, a good chance to see a few lesser seen Disney movies at Cinemark Artegon Mall with the Disney Screen program they have at the theatre. For 5 bucks see Robin Hood, Sword in the Stone, The three Musketeers (1993) and the rarely talked about Black Cauldron. I'll be there on Monday myself marathoning them all, it's been surprisingly fun catching up on these old school Disney classics
That does sounds awesome! I've never seen the Black Cauldron though. I've been interested in the box since I was a kid, but that's the one Disney VHS my parents didn't pick up during that time period.
This is probably a weird thing to fixate on, but I'm loving the deleted scenes on the CREED blu-ray. Each one of them is a potentially decent expository scene that motivates story and adds to the plot, but Coogler had the good sense to understand where and how to trim the fat. Really impressed with that. Makes the film that much better.

Yep, I thought the CGI looked awful in the Broadbusters trailer. The whole thing was worse than I anticipated.
