  2. As an Orlandoean (I live hear and I don't even know if that's the correct term) and a Disney Cast Member, I hope you guys had a great time! I didn't want to interrupt your family time, but look me up on your next visit!

As for the year so far, I'm with Patrick in that there are probably two or three releases at most thus far that I could see making my top 10. But that's not to say there hasn't been a lot of solid work. It has, indeed, been a very good year.

Regarding War for the Planet of the Apes, I feel like it HAS to be dark seeing how we are rapidly spiraling into what I assume is the end of man. Dark stuff, man. That being said, I REALLY hope that movie is as amazing as I feel it looks. This PotA reboot series has been my favorite franchise in quite a while.

  3. about Get Out, there's apparently an alternate ending on the blu-ray. i'm guessing it's also in the streaming releases.

    i'm curious what's different

  4. I'm with Patrick that I can barely get three out of a top 10 list so far and I feel that this has been a pretty down year, though, maybe I just haven't seen the right stuff yet. So far these are the only films in consideration for my top 10 and possibly only 2 or 3 are legit:

    Parasites
    XX
I Don't Feel at Home in this World Anymore
    Get Out
    Split
    Kong

"Blackcoat's Daughter" is the best Horror film of the year but I saw it last year (my 3rd fav movie of 2016). Not a fan of "Logan", bored me to death. I would consider "Hounds of Love" but I don't see myself ever watching it again, though it's really, really good. Need to see "Colossal", "JW2" and "Belko". The indie Horror scene in particular seems way, way down from last year BUT we've got a few much anticipated ones coming soon so here's to hoping that the next 7 months bring it! Will A24 be the saviors again? I would bet on it.

    1. Hmmm, the Canadian release of Blackcoat's Daughter is apparently called The Devil's Daughter.

  5. I think this has been a really terrific year so far. Get Out, Collosal, Guardians 2, John Wick 2, Logan, Lego Batman, and I Don't Feel at Home in this World Anymore all have good shots of making my top ten this year.

Re: Beauty and the Beast - if you liked the Lion Ling musical, I think you might like this movie. It felt a lot like a Broadway musical, and I had a pretty great time

  6. I have a tip for the "social thriller" folks: horror movies are the ones where a freshly harvested brain gets thrown into a bucket.

  7. I guess I'm in the middle. I haven't gotten a chance to see Blackcoat's Daughter or Colossal yet, but I think most of what I've seen has been pretty good. Get Out, John Wick 2 and Guardians will likely end up in my top 10, and I Don't Feel at Home on this World Anymore has a real shot. This doesn't seem unusual tho, I think most years my top 10 is mostly things I see post-July (with the exception of a very front-loaded 2015).

And I'll mention anticipation for It Comes at Night, the newest A24 release. Looks pretty good.

    1. Yeah I'm thinking (and hoping) that It Comes at Night is gonna be something special.

  8. I'm glad to hear a recommendation for lost city of Z, I was pretty wary but will gladly check it out now.

This year I'm trying really hard to go into every movie I see with positivity, but not hope. It's a big difference for me. This way I can try to enjoy the film for what it is offering instead of being dismayed by what it isn't. It's going okay so far, but I'm also avoiding acts of treason against my childhood like King Arthur and the fucking fuck fuck.

Also happy to hear that JB will be turning from a liberal's first favorite thing, a teacher, into a liberal's second favorite thing...Unemployed.

  9. Theres a rumour that there's a new Paul Thomas Anderson Daniel Day-Lewis collaboration out for oscar season. I'm impossibly hyped for that.

  10. I knew JB would like Lost City of Z. I did as well. Charlie Hunnam was good/really good in it as a loving father, ardent explorer, and snappy British arguer. Just a classic feel throughout, good storytelling and characters. Something kinda special honestly in my opinion.

As a Tennessean but far away from Nashville, I've been to the Belcourt Theatre a few times and it rules, not sure if you went there. The town can party pretty hard too, as you mentioned.

  11. Also hope you ate some Nash hot chicken! And congrats on retirement!!

  12. I love hearing JB be excited about his retirement.

I'm really excited for this year. Even though it's a year of sequels, its sequels of things I seriously love. Should I be so bold as to suggest that there has to be AT LEAST one good one? We will see.

On a side note I'm making a few trips down to the States from Canada over the next few months and I'm planning on taking advantage of some of your sweet sweet Netflix.

  13. BTW, K-19: The Widowmaker is a great movie! I liked how it avoided resorting to the usual "submarine movie" tropes like avoiding depth charges, etc.

  14. I'm with you, JB, on that Blackcoat's Daughter love. It has three of my favorite performances of the year in Emma Roberts, Kiernan Shipka and...I'm blanking on her name. Just a really interesting and chilling movie.

  15. JB, I'm glad to hear you had a good time in my city of Nashville. And congrats to Jake! I'm bummed I had to miss the fest this year. But I was vacationing in California so I guess I can't complain. I would have treated you like an A-list celebrity if I had bumped into you. I know that's what you've always wanted.

  16. I have only seen a handful of 2017 movies, but my favorite so far might just be Don't Kill It, which Patrick mentioned briefly. That movie is so much fun!

  17. The Cinerama theater is in Dayton, OH. I live nearby, saw "How the West Was Won" years ago in Cinerama. It was a cool experience as a curiosity, but the format itself didn't change my life or anything. Seemed like more of a novelty. I'd still recommend making the pilgrimage if you're at all interested.

  18. I think it's so bizarre that the movies that gross the most money in recent years are talked about so little. E.G. I haven't heard a peep about Beauty and the Beast since the Monday after it opened and yet it's grossed over a billion dollars.
