Patrick and JB do their part to crown this 2016 Coen Brothers movie a masterpiece. Would that it were so simple.

  1. Haha! I love Hail, Caesar! AND Burn After Reading! Would love you to review that one. I'm surprised it wasn't more popular. Both always have me rolling. I compare these - and many other - Coen Brother comedies to quality (usually older) Muppet humor. It may not be a serious or important comparison, but it's delightful to me if you can resemble or replicate their brand of intelligent drama-just-for-fun humor. Few can or do. It might be that these two Coen comedies have deeper messaging...but so far I don't think so :)

  2. Your love for the movie is infectious, but i just can't get into this movie. I really liked it the first time, but 2nd and 3rd viewing were not as good. I like parts of it, but not the whole

  3. I've had a 4K setup for a while and have watched many which looked awesome. The transfer of the Heat 4K was unwatchable. As Patrick said it looks like it was shot day for night. I put in my standard def DVD and the colors popped in comparison. I wish I knew what JB's secret setup was because that's one of my favorites...

Great episode guys! (Hail, Caesar! rules)

    1. I’ve got a Sony 4K Blu-ray player and a Samsung TV set to filmmaker mode. Could it actually have something to do with the HDMI cable? (All the paperwork on both pieces of hardware insisted on HDMI 2 cables, so I made sure I had them.)

    2. Thanks for the tips! I have a similar setup but my TV is apparently pre-filmmaker mode. Hopefully that's the key..

      Thanks again!

    3. I bet somewhere on the Google machine is a guide to manually set all the adjustments to an approximation of filmmaker mode?

    4. Mine defaults to Filmmaker Mode and it still looks like I'm watching it through sunglasses (just for HEAT; other 4K titles look great).

    5. I juste did a comparison of Heat. And you're right, the 4k is noticeably darker than the bluray. It's weird

  4. I would LOVE to hear a show on Burn After Reading! I've been championing that movie for years, and it's actually become a comfort movie for me that I can pop on anytime. My wife and I quote it constantly day to day.

Glad you both really dig Hail Caesar as well. It's one I've grown to appreciate more and more with each rewatch.

  5. Underrated Josh Brolin performance, and all around underrated movie, is Only the Brave from a few years ago. It definitely feels a bit like Kosinski warming up for Top Gun Maverick, but this movie actually gives the actors (particularly Jennifer Connelly given what she has to work with in TGM) characters to play that are flawed and have opportunities to grow. Nobody seems to talk about it but in my opinion it’s a great example of a movie for adults that y’all often mention not being made anymore.

I’d love a Burn After Reading podcast just so it could help me sort out my feelings on the movie. To me all the pieces of a great movie are there but it just never comes together in a satisfying way. But that’s exactly what my friend said after we saw Hail, Cesar! which I loved immediately so maybe I should trust in the brothers Coen and give it another chance.

  8. I wrote a whole take I felt weird about, so I deleted it. But I will say this...Hail, Caesar is to Hollywood what fucking Babylon wishes it could be
