  1. Mystery Men: i don't know why i wanted to watch this movie (yes i do, it's the patreon episode 😁). It's far from perfect, but it's fun

Spaceballs: i never understood why people don't generally like this movie more. Granted it's not high brow humor like other Mel Brooks movies, but to me it's hilarious, with a good pace and fun characters

Kingsman movie series: i love the first one. Matthew Vaughn knows how to make a good action scene. The second one is not as good, but i still have fun with it. The third one is actually a prequel is also very good and still show Vaughn's talents for action scenes, but the script is lacking a little bit

    1. Mystery Men is such a....Mystery..to me (i see what i did there). I SOOOO wish i liked it. Its based on/from a somewhat underground comic from back in the day that i really liked, The Flaming Carrot. Its got a great cast of quirky characters. But somewhere i dont connect..probably in the writing or direction..dont know..i revist every so often but havent "got it" yet. The same thing happens with me and Edgar Wrights "Hot Fuzz"...like i realllly dig what he does and what he makes but ive never connected with the humor of the flick..i appreciate it..but cant figure out why i dont 'get it'.

    2. I get that. Like i said, it's far from perfect, so the flaws can be annoying for some people.

I can't say the same with Hot Fuzz, which to me is a perfect movie 😁

  2. G'day Mates!

    Super 8 (2011 Blu)

I forgot how much i LOVE this movie. Im definitely the target demographic as it depicts kids with the same interests as me from the same age i was in the 80s. Theres no question that this flick is a pastiche of spielberg-esque stuff from a director following in his footsteps. What it gets SO right is having us following along with kids that act/talk/react like real 12ish year olds. As with stuff like Stand By Me, IT, Monster Squad, etc, having the kids swear and deal with real adolescence topics makes for better storytelling. The sci-fi alien storyline is somewhat formulaic but not without its own take on the subject and escalates nicely. Dig it!

  3. I did a spontaneous Peter Pan two-fer with the new PETER PAN AND WENDY (2023) and Joe Wright's PAN (2015).

The idea behind the new movie is to retell the story from Wendy's point of view, making her a more well-rounded character. That's an intriguing idea, and actress Ever Anderson is terrific as she gives a big "future movie star" performance. But the movie nonetheless repeats the exact same Peter Pan story we've all seen before.

Then there's PAN. If you absolutely must give Peter Pan a Marvel-ish superhero origin story, might as well go totally bonkers with it. It's all absurd nonsense. I feel we movie geeks don't talk about Joe Wright enough. His filmography is wild!

ZOMBIELAND (2009). I'm not sure this movie works for me, and I can't put my finger on why. But I'm glad quirky oddities like this exist.

DARK CITY (1998). Do you know the way to Shell Beach?

BABYLON (2022). I assumed that JB was exaggerating about the elephant poop. JB was NOT exaggerating about the elephant poop!!! I didn't enjoy this movie. It was just so ugly and mean-spirited. I'm glad I didn't see it at the Imax.

  4. Just saw POLITE SOCIETY and really dug it. Favorite new movie I've seen this year. Lots of fun, very unique, and (I thought) hilarious.

  5. I went to see Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. The worst part was the opening than-you from the cast for coming to the theaters to see it. I felt for Michelle Rodrigues, and the sincerity from Chris Pine should win him an Oscar alone. That aside, loved it. Reminded me of Hellboy. Probably of the speaking to a corpse part, but also because it blended comedy and fantasy really well. And I've actually seen Jonathan Goldstein play Dungeons and Dragons before, which was weird to realize. It's like, yeah, of course our generation of D&D players could write a better D&D movie than anyone else in Hollywood. It was great, hope they make another. I still think Pine should have punched Harry Styles for spitting in his chair. 4 Stars.

  6. Aw, I want to see this movie, CHAMPIONS (2023). I just saw a trailer for it on Apple TV. Itʻs too bad I missed it in theaters in March. Now itʻs 20$..woo..steep. Might wait. Woody Harrelson looks like heʻs having so much fun.

I saw movies this week. Nothing too exciting, though. OUT OF TIME (2003) and ROMAN J. ISRAEL, ESQ (2017). Rewatched TWISTER (1996). Twister is still really fun. I know peopleʻve wondered if the suspense and special effects have held up. I think so? Jo (Helen Hunt) was a big deal character for me growing up. Sheʻs fun but sheʻs also immature, gets in too many fights with Bill and is uncool to his fiancee. I related to her hard. I was rooting for her and disappointed in her at the same time.

I had to rewatch GANGS OF NEW YORK (2002) for a thingy. The best things about it for me are how much Scorsese clearly loves this history and the memorable love scene with Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz. Love that scene. I love any love scene with Leonardo DiCaprio. He has this rare talent for making love scenes in movies look not as dry as paper. He and Colin Farrell.

  8. Hey folks! How's everybody's week going?

I watched Cannon Films head honcho Menahem Golan's The Apple (1980) this week, and I kinda fell in love with it. It's silly and fun and crazy and epic (you know, small budget epic) and colorful and the soundtrack is good. This thing's gonna be in heavy rotation from now on.

Deadlier Than the Male (1967) and Some Girls Do (1969) are James Bond knockoffs starring Richard Johnson (apparently original Bond director Terence Young's first choice for Bond) as gentleman adventurer Hugh "Bulldog" Drummond. The first movie is really great, it of course does a lot of the Bond clichés (eccentric villain and weird henchman, plenty of girls in skimpy outfits) but it does them better than half of the actual Bond movies (when it gets going after quite a slow start). Plus I like the theme song. Had a lot of fun with it. Unfortunately, the sequel goes way too much for comedy and sci-fi with its silly fembot storyline.

And Danny Boyle's Yesterday (2019) mostly just annoyed me.

  9. You know what's fun... realising that you already have some movies in 4k. My latest discovery from the shelf, The Last Jedi. Nevermind what what you think of the movie, to me this is the best looking of the bunch. The throne room fight, the Holdo manoeuver, the blood desert fight and the Kylo/luke fight. All worthy of being wallpapers. The 4k makes them so shiny and beautiful. Thank you OCD collecting habit 🤣

  10. Cloverfield (2008 blu)

Another one i dig a BUNCH. the setup is a little long winded and the POV video cam can be offputting but i find that if you give in and go along for the ride, its a LOT of fun. Its also a movie that while there's been multiple tie in flicks, i feel like it'd be fun to see an actual sequel.
