Announcing Junesploitation 2023!

 by Patrick Bromley

F--- around and find out.

We're just two weeks away from the 10th annual Junesploitation, our month-long celebration of exploitation and genre films.

You know the drill: For those of you new to Junesploitation, here's how it works: each day of the month has its own theme, and you're supposed to watch a movie that ties into that theme. How you interpret the connection is entirely up to you, which means if you have no interest in exploitation or genre movies that's ok and you can still join in! If you're not into killer animals, watch Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties on June 13! Not a fan of sleazy revenge movies? Feel free to check out Getting Even With Dad on June 22. This month is supposed to be fun -- an excuse to watch movies every day and talk about them with one another. There are no "right" movies to watch. It's participating that gets you in the spirit, not watching a bunch of cheap, violent sleaze. That stuff is just a bonus.
If you do like those kinds of movies, though, or if you're willing to give them a shot, it's super easy to participate in Junesploitation thanks to streaming services. Netflix isn't a ton of help, but Amazon Prime Video and Tubi have a deep library of titles and there are a couple of streaming platforms (like Shudder and Screambox) devoted to just these kinds of movies. A few other streamers have a number of titles you might want to check out this month. And while I rarely advocate watching movies on YouTube, there's a lot of cool and obscure stuff to be found there if you're willing to look. Stay tuned for our annual Junesploitation Primer for help on where to find some good titles, though by now most of you know where to look.

Here is this year's schedule, featuring a few new categories and a bunch of returning favorites:

  1. Yes! I had some sort of weird sixth sense that this would get published today. Gonna start brainstorming my calendar and see if I can stick to it.

  2. HAZAAA!!!! Hands down one of my FAVORITE things about F This Movie is Junesploitation. A chance to dig deep into the dark corners of cinema history, watch a LOT more movies, share, and most of all, get great suggestions from fellow F This crew!!! Even better..once you start to go down the road of the daily F This suggestions, it opens your eyes to SO MANY MORE hidden gems, directors, genre's*, creators, etc. Ill have my notebook at the ready!

AMAZING lineup this year Patrick!!! Too many good options to comment on but i will callout huge love for the "people" categories...Fred, Cynthia, and Sammo** rock.

Peace and A Bunch of Cheap Violent Sleaze!

**Sammo may be new to some of ya, he's an incredible action star from Hong Kong who has a huge output of work (acting, producing, directing). Some of which includes amazing team ups with his 'brothers' Jackie Chan and Yuen Biao. And for a little bit of monday morning trivia: when Chad Stahelski was conceiving John Wick 4, he based the look of the character of Killah (size and outfit) on Sammo Hung (outfit from the great movie SPL).

    1. Sammo Hung is awesome and I'm glad he has a day dedicated to him so I can get more recommendations. I watched Eastern Condors (1987) last year, which he directed and starred in the lead role, and it ended up making my Top Ten list of watched movies last year.

    2. Thanks for the link! I've been looking forward to exploring that genre ever since Patrick was talking about Live Like A Cop, Die Like A Man.

  3. Think I'm going to be flying entirely by the seat of my pants on this one, with little to no preplanning. Well, I guess Day 1 for me is already planned since the Teenagers theme fits in with the Thursday night release of Across the Spider-Verse. I guess I could also try to work in a showing of The Blackening for Blaxsploitation day also since that releases around the same time. Don't know if Asteroid City will work for Alien day yet, but it would work for a Free Space I suppose. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if the Free Space and Sequels space at the end of the month was planned around Indiana Jones to some extent.

Excited for the Rothrock day, and every day is already Summo Hung day for me.

  6. OMG, I was sure it'd be another week before the schedule is published. Christmas comes early this year!

  7. This is my 3rd Junesploitation and having just shared in on a 2nd FThisMovie fest (1983, yeah baby!) and a few #scarymoviemonth, and I already feel apart of the family. I just can't wait to post, like and share in all the majesty that is Junesploitation.

Thanks F This Movie and happy birthday! Somehow you all have assembled what must be the coolest collection of movie writers and podcasters that to hit just about every niche of film that interests me and a whole lot of other folks too.... Each week there seems to be an article that puts words to my own cinematic ponderings and attitudes. For example, Anthony's seasons article from the other day. I can certainly point to doing my first June challenge that inspired me to make my own beloved annual traditions (such as everything '83 and Kaiju Xmas, occuring each March and December, respectively) essentially providing structure to the chaos of my viewing habits.

As you can probably tell, I appreciate F This Movie a whole hell of a lot!

    ¡Viva la Junesploitation!

  8. Only two more weeks to wait until the fun begins.

There was certainly no tease this year for the calendar. (I remember trying to guess the days from the blurred calendar on Twitter last year.) As usual, there is a lot of variety this year to the categories. Certain categories- Sequels, Animals, Monsters - I am still thinking about. Others have obvious choices, things that are in already in my collection or titles that I have meant to watch. Rip-off day is calling for an Italian film, maybe something from Bruno Mattei.

  9. Yay, my birthday is REVENGE! Patrick truly knows me and captures my personality, which is laser-focused on sweet, sweet retribution for the many wrongs y'all have done to me. Oh, AND maybe an excuse to rewatch some Park Chan-wook. JUNESPLOITATION 4EVA babies!
