LIFEBOAT rules! Easily my favorite Hitchcock.
ReplyDeleteLoved this podcast!
ReplyDeleteOh, you know who else always remakes herself like that? Agatha Christie. Almost every one of her stories is within or comprises a part of another story. They're all very similar. Maybe it's a mystery writer thing.
I like FRENZY. You're so right, Patrick- it would have been SO GOOD with Michael Caine. There's just never enough Michael Caine.
My favorite Hitchcock is actually one I first saw recently: THE LADY VANISHES. It's super light hearted and charming but there's just enough creepiness to make it Hitchcock.
I have a fondness for ROPE because it's one I put on for background noise and I can't resist James Stewart flirting with the housekeeper. My love for VERTIGO has really plummeted since high school when it was my favorite movie. I need James Stewart to be appealing and sexy and strong; I can't deal with him falling apart and killing women. REAR WINDOW I struggle with because I can't stand Grace Kelly in that role. I always think she is like nails on a chalk board with her fake voice and powdery looks. Not her fault because I like her in other movies. MARNIE - love. Cuz it's sexy. THE BIRDS - it's so compelling but it just doesn't have enough story substance for me to consider it a masterpiece. NORTH BY NORTHWEST - actually, this one never clicked for me either. LIFEBOAT - I won't watch it over and over but I think it's really good.
Not that you asked my opinion, but I just love talking Hitchcock :)
I actually haven’t seen FAMILY PLOT! I was thinking of THE TROUBLE WITH HARRY when I saw the title so now that’s up next in my queue.
ReplyDeleteI was a casual Hitchcock fan for years who’d only seen the hits, which is strange to me as REBECCA may be my favorite movie of all time. So last year dived in and watched 28.
This year I’ve only rewatched one because of… burnout? I didn’t watch any clunkers but maybe just too much of one flavor.
And tho I appreciate it’s a masterpiece I have never loved VERTIGO the way I do NbNW and REAR WINDOW.
Anyway my favorite discoveries from last year were THE LADY VANISHES, FRENZY, and FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT.
Great pod! Always happy to hear love for Trap and The Village and am always fascinated by love for The Happening (which is one of my wife’s favorite Shyamalans).
Love 'Frenzy' ....even if this isn't one of Hitchcock's 'top' flicks. Back to the beginning of your discussion - An early Don Johnson movie? Hello! 'A Boy and His Dog'...
