Howdy sirs...i hadnt heard about the referenced Lynch/Grillo situation. Any idea where i can hear the backstory? Podcast? other? Or is it less details and more of a super bad experience and thats that.
I’m in the middle of my Bond watch/rewatch for the year and I’ve just finished For Your Eyes Only. These are the first Bonds I saw in theaters as a kid and I haven’t seen any of them since the 80s. I can’t wait to hear your takes on Duran Duran!!
So by my counts, these are the Bonds Patrick and Mike haven't covered yet: From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice, Diamonds Are Forever, For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy, Licence to Kill, Tomorrow Never Dies, Quantum of Solace, and Skyfall*. Only two Moores left but a lot of Connery. And now that I'm looking at the list, I find myself excited to hear them cover them all.
(* Patrick and JB covered Skyfall when it came out, but obviously that doesn't count.)
It does get confusing though because I don't think the Movies A - Z section gets updated consistently anymore and because the tags aren't always consistent either.
That’s actually fewer than I thought, if that count is accurate, minus the ones that Ross mentioned. At this rate we’ll have no problem getting through them all in the next 30 years, lol.
Always good to hear a Bondcast! As a big Duran Duran fan, I've always loved the theme.
And yeah, I figured you guys could probably knock out Thunderball and Never Say Never Again in one episode since the latter is kind of unofficial anyway and it makes sense to talk about one when talking about the other.
Fascinating to hear that IRL Kids These Days actively dislike The Last Jedi, even eight years later. I myself dislike it, but I wonder if years of negative YouTube videos play a role. That said, I also wonder to what extent said kids/young adults feel genuinely betrayed about its depiction of Luke. I guess they might have been the last generation of kids to have looked up to Luke as a hero of their childhoods before the Sequel Trilogy was a thing, and thus took the portrayal particularly hard?
Also, I understand liking The Last Jedi and not digging the Rey-Kylo kiss in The Rise of Skywalker, but being surprised by it? Rian John absolutely wrote Rey and Kylo as being attracted to each other, with Rey nearly falling for his tortured (shirtless!) bad boy shtick. When she weeps as he begs her to join him in taking over the First Order and shunning the Jedi legacy, there's definitely an element of personal heartbreak there. Granted, Johnson probably wouldn't have had them actually smooch if he'd written the next movie, but he most certainly laid the groundwork for it.
My feelings regarding TLJ are similar to Patrick's feelings on how some Bond themes are good songs, but not good Bond themes. TLJ is a decent movie, but it's a bad Episode VIII of the Skywalker Saga.
^ Interesting take. I'd be fascinated to poke my head into an alternate universe in which Johnson made Ep. 9 instead of 8. I wonder if he'd have been as willing to sweep away the narrative setups of two movies instead of just one (let alone would he have been allowed to do so). Also, IIRC, he's been fairly upfront about the fact that he wanted his movie to provide a sense of closure, which I agree was a misplaced intention, so maybe he'd have delivered a great closure-filled movie in a chapter in which closure was actually appropriate? Or maybe he'd have made a movie every bit as smug and condescending (IMHO) as The Last Jedi? Who knows? :P
Oh Snap! Grandpa Bond is on the loose!

License to Kill was covered on FTM 656 (11/30/22)

DeleteYou're right Ross, Licence and Quantum shouldn't be on that list. I was going by the "bond movies" tag, but those two are missing it.
