2K Replay: CAPOTE

 by Adam Riske

Nominated for “Best Actor” (Philip Seymour Hoffman) at the Golden Schmoes Awards. He lost to Joaquin Phoenix in Walk the Line.

• Best Scene/Moment: Any scene demonstrating how good Truman Capote was at disarming and manipulating people to get what he wanted.

• Best Song: “Easy to Remember” by John Coltrane.
• Best Merch: A “Capote 2005 Movie Upper Deck Certified Authentic Movie Worn Jacket Card Rare” for $19.95. So, the card says you’re getting a piece of jacket worn by Philip Seymour Hoffman in Capote, but I can’t tell from the eBay listing if it comes with the piece of jacket or not or if you’re just getting the card saying that you are. Without that piece of jacket this is nonsensical. How else will part of you stay warm?

• Director Grade: Capote was directed by Bennett Miller.
Great Movies: Moneyball
Good Movies: Capote
OK Movies: N/A
Bad Movies: Foxcatcher
Unseen By Me: The Cruise
Overall Grade: B+

• Double It with This 2005 Movie: Brokeback Mountain

• Year 2005 Movies to Trailer Before Them: Crash, Good Night and Good Luck, Munich
Never Talk to Strangers or Capote? Capote

• Mall Movie? Nope. This is a prestige Oscar winning drama for adults and an actor showcase. The exact opposite of a mall movie.

• Only in 2005: I thought I may have underestimated Dan Futterman.

• Scene Stealer: Clifton Collins Jr.

• I Miss: Philip Seymour Hoffman. RIP.

• I Don’t Miss: When I was so enamored with Oscar culture that I felt like I needed to see all the major awards players each year even if I had no interest in the movie based on the talent involved, story, or marketing.
• 2005 Crush: Catherine Keener.

• 2025 Crush: Amy Ryan.

• What I Thought in 2005: I thought Capote was really good (and sad) and the transformative performance by Philip Seymour Hoffman lived up to the hype.

• What I Think in 2025: It’s very good and a movie I probably appreciate more in 2025 than I did in 2005. Capote is solid all around and not just an actor's showcase, which is what I remembered it as over the past 20 years. For “Oscar bait,” it’s very involving.

  1. This movie is to be watched with In Cold Blood, which is the adaptation of the book Capote is writing in this.

    1. I mean, sure but the thing for 2K Replay is what 2005 you double it with

    2. Oh yes, sorry, i wasn't talking about the 'double it' section. I meant in general, sort of.

I do need to rewatch Brokeback Mountain though 😁
