2K Replay: GRANDMA'S BOY

 by Adam Riske

Nominated for “Worst Actor of the Decade” (Rob Schneider) at the Razzie Awards. It was a nomination for his shared work in several movies, including Grandma’s Boy. He lost to Eddie Murphy.

• Best Scene/Moment: It’s really hard to choose, but I’ll go with each time Nick Swarsdon and Shirley Jones share a scene. They’re so funny together.

• Best Song: “Alive & Amplified” by The Mooney Suzuki.
• Best Merch: A “Nick Swarsdon Signed Mini Dance Dance Revolution Video Game…” for $249.99. This is a cool piece of movie memorabilia. I tried playing Dance Dance Revolution once at Dave & Buster’s and did really bad to the point where it wasn’t even fun. Maybe if I practiced on a miniature at home I could one day redeem myself.

• Director Grade: Grandma’s Boy was directed by Nicholaus Goossen.
Great Movies: Grandma’s Boy
Good Movies: N/A
OK Movies: N/A
Bad Movies: N/A
Unseen By Me: The Shortcut, Drugstore June
Overall Grade: A-

• Double It with This 2006 Movie: The Benchwarmers

• Year 2006 Movies to Trailer Before Them: Beerfest, Click, Van Wilder: The Rise of Taj

Ella McCay or Grandma’s Boy? Grandma’s Boy
• Mall Movie? Yes. Every Happy Madison movie would play at the mall.

• Only in 2006: I don’t see the fictional company Brainasium making it to 2007. It’s like the Stratton Oakmont of video game organizations. It makes sense Jonah Hill worked at both. My goodness, how does Linda Cardellini’s character withstand it? She’s sexually harassed by Allen Covert on an hourly basis.

• Scene Stealer (tie): Shirley Jones and Nick Swarsdon. Honorable Mentions: Joel David Moore and Doris Roberts. There’s too many to choose from.

• I Miss: The days when there would be like a 2 in 5 chance that the Happy Madison movie you were about to watch would be hilarious. It was worth sitting through the bad ones to search for buried treasure.

• I Don’t Miss: Playing video games. I’m just not smart enough for them. Once there were buttons on top of the controllers my learning disability kicked in and I was lost.
• 2006 Crush: Linda Cardellini.

• 2026 Crush: Linda Cardellini.

• What I Thought in 2006: This is one of the best examples of seeing a movie at the dollar theater and walking away feeling like you just won the lottery. In 2006, I thought Grandma’s Boy was one of the best 2000s comedies and further proof I could never skip a Happy Madison movie.

• What I Think in 2026: Grandma’s Boy is still really funny and one of my favorite entries in the Happy Madison universe (it’s probably the best one not starring Adam Sandler). Allen Covert does a good enough job holding everything together as the lead that I’m surprised he didn’t get another chance to do it. This is such a fun hangout movie. I’m honestly surprised this held up as well as it did.

  1. Yes! one of my regular watch, when I need something familiar, easy and fun. And because I'm an OCD physical media collector, I had to get the german blu-ray, because it doesn't exist in north america yet. I'm sure Vinegar Syndrome or Arrow will do a super awesome 4k in a few months though
