Tell Us Your Top 10 of 2011!

Watchin' Trailerz with Doug is on vacation this week, so in its place we want to hear from you. Before we start publishing our Top 10 of 2011 lists, we want to know what's making your list this year. Is it Tree of Life? Midnight in Paris? What's Your Number? Give your Top 10 in the comments below!

10 comments:

  1. X-Men: First Class, The Tree of Life, The Help, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Like Crazy, Bridesmaids, Blue Valentine, Super 8, Scream 4, and Horrible Bosses.

  2. With the caveat that there are two days left in 2011 and there are movies on tap for this weekend ("Margaret," "Shame," "The Descendants," etc.) that might change my list. That said the #1 spot is pretty much locked and solid:

    10. TIE: Cave of Forgotten Dreams 3D (Werner Herzog); Pina 3D (Wim Wenders) - proof that low-budget indie/documentary filmmakers can use 3D (or be equally seduced to use it like the big studio directors) when they're as talented and specialized as Herzog and Wenders.

    9. Super (James Gunn)

    8. 13 Assassins (Takashi Miike)

    7. Hugo 3D (Martin Scorsese)

    6. Drive (Nicholas W. Refn)

    5. Captain America: The First Avenger (Joe Johnston)

    4. A Dangerous Method (David Cronenberg)

    3. Midnight in Paris (Woody Allen)

    2. Moneyball (Bennett Miller)

    1. TIE: Melancholia (Lars Von Trier); Another Earth (Mike Cahill) - if Roger Ebert can name "Troy" and "Alexander" the worst movies of 2004 based on the trend of using CG to enhance empty spectable then I can also name my two favorite movies of 2011 the science fiction 'another planet comes into Earth's orbit' movies that choose to use the planets as the 'B' plots to narratives more concerned with the lead character's tortured soul.

    3. Drive

    2. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

  6. So, checking my spreadsheet, what released in 2011 did I actually see? From best to worst:

    1. Melancholia
    2. Cave of Forgotten Dreams
    3. Another Earth
    4. Rise of the Planet of the Apes
    5. Captain America: The First Avenger
    6. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2
    7. X-Men: First Class
    8. Thor
    9. Bobby Fischer Against the World
    10. Almighty Thor

Yep, I need to actually go to the movies more this year. I saw 191 movies this year though, the earliest being 1902's Le Voyage dans la lune) (A Trip To The Moon), so no complaints.

  7. After a weekend of movie-going I have to ammend my earlier Top 10 of 2011.

    10. 13 Assassins (Takashi Miike)

    9. TIE: Cave of Forgotten Dreams 3D (Werner Herzog); Pina 3D (Wim Wenders)

    8. Hugo 3D (Martin Scorsese)

    7. The Descendants (Alexander Payne)

    6. Midnight in Paris (Woody Allen)

    5. Captain America: The First Avenger (Joe Johnston)

    4. Moneyball (Bennett Miller)

    3. A Separation (Asghar Farhadi)

    2. A Dangerous Method (David Cronenberg)

    1. TIE: Melancholia (Lars Von Trier); Another Earth (Mike Cahill)

"Drive" and "Super" were lowered to #11 and #12, respectively (sorry Mr. Refn and Mr. Gunn!)

HONORABLE MENTIONS: Jason Reitman's "Young Adult" and Kenneth Lonergan's "Margaret." I so wanted to like these movies and name them in my Top 10. But I honestly can't overlook their flaws (in "Margaret's" case a too-obviously-edited-without-Lonergan version that ruins the flow of the narrative) and my own inability to NOT enjoy them for what they are because of what I thought and wanted them to be. Both are must-see films though, ambitious and better than two thirds of movies released this past year (or, in "Margaret's" case, 2/3's of all movies released since 2005)... just not Top 10 of 2011 good. I'm in pain! :-(
