  1. Congratulations on getting through an entire podcast in which the career and movies of Vince Vaughn are discussed without mentioning (quite early in his rise to fame, right after "Swingers" and "The Lost World") his Norman Bates role on Gus Van Sant's "Psycho" remake. That must have taken a lot of self-restrain from Patrick. :-)

Never seen "Swingers" and never will (just don't care for anyone/anything in it). Fun podcast though, and I love Doug teasing a big reveal about his personal life that doesn't add up to much. Quit trying to top the Haverick Doug, it's to you what being kidnapped is to Mark Ahn: your 'F'ing legacy.

  2. Agree with the point about the LA-centric-ness about the film, but it's LA-centric in a way that's very warm and sort of nostalgic (for those of us who lived there).

I love Swingers for the "douchey" parts and the sensitive ones, because it's coming from that place where a lot of dudes (and probably ladies too) were dealing with the construction of your adult persona, where you had to still be "cool" but had to negotiate that frustration and confusion stemming from the scary transition of becoming all "growns-up." It's that tension between being that Alpha male, but still being scared to death that you're going to fail at ... whatever (career, relationship, etc.).

For better or for worse, this movie and Vanilla Sky hit close to home for me in terms of the emotional vibe of both.

    Good times.

    1. Agree with you on "Vanilla Sky." I really hated it at first (couldn't get past the fact the publicity/posters were all about Tom Cruise and didn't mention Kurt Russell was in it... yes, that was a deal-breaker for me back then!) because I felt the original "Abre Tus Ojos" movie did the story just as well without the Hollywood glitz/star power. But repeat viewings showed me there's lots more under the seemingly 'rich white people having emotional problems' outside veneer. I still prefer the Spanish original (what's sexier than Penelope Cruz speaking English? Penelope Cruz speaking Spanish! :-P) but this is the rare American remake that doesn't completely fuck up the content AND context of the foreign language original flick from which it was based.

The no-nonsense approach with which Patrick and Alex Lawson tackled the movie in the 'F' podcast is awesome; it's one of the better podcasts done on this site. It also, sadly, marks the last time Cameron Crowe did a thinking man's movie. He's hardly directed anything since, and what movies he directs ("Elizabethtown," "We Bought A Zoo," etc.) don't necessarily scream 'I was made by the guy who did 'Almost Famous' and 'Jerry McGuire.' :-(

  4. As I commented on Jury Room what I like about Swingers is the attitude – Trent and crew are full of bravado and charm but gradually you realise they are basically just a bunch of guys as clueless about life and love as the rest of us. As you mention this is evident in Trent’s final scene mis-reading “signals” from the woman at the coffee shop. What stands out for me is the way these friends deal with life and the way they look out for each other. I have a very Trent-like friend who has got me through a breakup or two! I also love how the ending completely throws out all the "wait 3 days to call" bullsh*t when Heather Graham calls Jon Favreau. If you've ever been lucky enough to have the girl call YOU (yeah it's happened to me like, once...), you completely understand the grin on his face as the film fades to black. Love it!
