Announcing F This Movie Fest 2!

It's coming one month from today.

Last year's inaugural F This Movie Fest was a big success -- lots of nice people took part, and I think it's safe to say that everyone had a pretty great time. It only makes sense to make it an annual tradition, right?

So the Second Annual F This Movie Fest will take place on Saturday, February 2nd, 2013 beginning at Noon CST. In case you forgot, here's what to do to take part:

1. Secure a copy of all the movies in the lineup (titles will be announced in a few days).
2. If you're not already doing so, follow F This Movie! on Twitter. If you're not already on Twitter, you should sign up! You can quit the very next day if you want.
3. Beginning at Noon on Saturday, February 2, we all start watching the first movie at the same time from the comfort of YOUR OWN HOME or wherever and talk about it on Twitter (just tag all of your comments with #fthismoviefest). It will be like a running commentary. A conversation. Just like WE'RE ALL IN THE SAME ROOM TOGETHER!
4. If you have to leave for a movie or can only participate in half the festival or whatever, that's cool! Just check in or out with us on Twitter so we know who's there and when. Hopefully, we can all do the full marathon, but we know that's not easy for everyone. Everyone who lasts through the whole festival will of course be honored on the show.
I don't know of too many (or any) Twitter film festivals, so know that you'll be a part of something unique and special and SUPER COOL. I'm not bragging or anything, but last year's fest was written up by A.V. Club, The Huffington Post, Chicagoist and more. But I'm NOT bragging.

Let's do it. Who's in?

One month.

  1. Sweet - in! I'm not bragging or anything but Erika said I had the funniest tweet during last year's F This Movie Fest. But I'm NOT bragging.

    1. Don't tease us. WHAT WAS THE TWEET?

    2. Heheh - I hate to retell my own joke and the legend is always better than the reality but:

      Erika tweeted (during Dark Crystal): When we figure out how to bring people back from the dead, Jim Henson should be first!

      I replied: What about my Nana?

      Ah, is there anything funnier than dead grandparent jokes?

    3. Ha! You better bring it this year, Sol!!

  2. Hooray! I'll even try not to gab about chili during this year's fest!

    (Please don't inflict Prince of Thieves on us....)

    1. No joke, your chili tweets were a highlight for everyone at FTM central last year.

    2. Is "chili tweets" a euphemism?

  3. I know I'm "part of the crew" and therefore "shouldn't be overly enthusiastic" about this "one-of-a-kind" film festival, and that this is "not the place" to "gush" about how much fun "we" all have, but, you guys, I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS.

  4. Should we infer from the pic used for the story that 1991 (specifically the summer) will be the subject of this new twitter film fest? Because (a) if "Dying Young" isn't part of the festival then why even have a '91 film fest at all. And (b) if "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" is part of the line-up please make sure it's the director's cut (widely available on DVD and Blu-ray) and not the theatrical version (early DVD prints, but also maybe the one available on the almighty planets-revolve-around-its-orbit-of-influence Netflix Instant) that we watch. Because more of George Kuffs, Roy McAvoy and the voice of God in a twitter film fest is never a bad thing.

    And while we're at, how about some Cronenberg "Naked Lunch" in the line-up to get people to truly blow their minds (and chunks of their lunch) all over twitter? :-P

  5. This makes me crazy happy, and I can guarantee we'll be making a big pot of chili at casa de JP in honor of Joseph Finn and for the pure joy of watching 5 movies in a row while being uncomfortably gassy

  6. Super Cool!
    If it's all the same timing as last year then I'll probably only be joining for the second half. But I'm really looking forward to it. Last year was a truck load of fun.

  7. My new-to-me movie for today:

    Yaron Zilberman's A LATE QUARTET (2012) in theaters.

    Like the performance of a difficult Beethoven music piece at the center of the narrative, Catherine Keener, Mark Ivanir (who survives an uber-lame, against-type character switch before coming back in time for the finale) and Philip Seymour Hoffman bounce off each other setting sparks as the terrific supporting cast at the service of a great elder-statement performance by a restrained Christopher Walken. "A Late Quartet" mines similar characters/locations as Kenneth Lonergan's "Margaret" (Manhattan's Upper West Side middle-to-upper class intellectuals) but (a) from the POV of middle-aged/older folks (with one young character working stricly as a plot device) and (b) is perfectly content being an honest-to-goodness Douglas Sirk-type melodrama, complete with Angelo Badalamenti's sentimental music sharing space on the soundtrack with Beethoven arrangements.

    If "Big Night" is about the conflict between art and commerce then the heart of "A Late Quartet" is the emotional baggage and personal consequences when an individual sells out his artistic integrity for the benefit (commercial as well as artistic) of the group. It's not a black or white issue since, as a group, the quartet in the movie have gotten so much more out of being together (personally as well as professionally) that the stakes for the performance the whole movie leads up to feel very real. It's a testament to "A Late Quartet" firing on its intended cylinders that it works despite some rather-limited and poorly-masked (by editing and camera angles) inability of the talented cast to properly mimic performing with the instruments they're supposedly playing.

    Seven-word review: Live from Lincoln Center: Captain Koons' cello!

    1. Please, no reviews of the movies on the film fest until we know which one's they are (not that I'm disagreeing with your "review" of "Ronib Hood: POT") :-P.

  10. I can go this year! P.S. I hope the picture is a hint that we're going to watch Dying Young which is (not Robin Hood) the real movie of the summer of 91. Runner up to the 91 summer crown - Dutch.

    1. If Looks Could Kill. Not a summer movie.

      TMNT II: The Secret of the Ooze. Not a summer movie?

      We never said summer...

  12. Adam, seriously, "Dutch" and "King Ralph"? You know Patrick better than us, so you know "Curly Sue" and "Barton Fink" (ying and yang) are as good as in for '91. :-) Personally I wouldn't mind a film fest with "Mobsters" (Rat Pack '90), "Life Stinks," "Meet the Applegates" (insect rape!), "V.I. Warshawski" and, of course, "K2" (before she became 'The Widowmaker'). But I'll settle for "Hudson Hawk," "L.A. Story" (a personal favorite of mine), "Switch" and "Hook" for some barf-worthy tweets. Also, Patrick loves romantic comedies so don't count out "Regarding Henry" (laughs aplenty), "The Marrying Man" (when Baldwin and Bassinger were the 'A' celebrity couple) or "Billy Bathgate" (no romance here, but we do got young Nicole Kidman giving the full spano!).

    My serious predictions for the film fest if its at all based on 1991 (ignoring availability on Netflix Instant, because Hoover):

    -"Out for Justice" (Segal in his prime);
    -"The People Under the Stairs" (fascinating and rather timely Wes Craven failed horror flick that still disturbs);
    -"Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" (Patrick is now officially a Trekkie and this is the last film with the original cast of the original TV series; it's no "Wrath of Khan" but it'll do);
    -"What About Bob?" (underrated Bill Murray comedy)
    -"Terminator 2/Hudson Hawk/Silence of the Lambs" (blockbuster done good, bomb and critically-acclaimed classic that the Academy actually got right... one of these has got to be in, and last year's announcement of the Film Fest had a picture of "E.T." which didn't end up on the film fest, so it ain't looking good for "Robin Hood")
    -"New Jack City" (just for the ridiculous number of future stars in early roles)
    -"The Rocketeer" (I'd bet good money this is a lock).
