Introducing Junesploitation!

Get ready for 30 days of fast cars, hot women, ax murderers, zombies and ninjas!

Last summer, F This Movie! ran its first ever (30) Stars of Summer, in which we all watched a movie starring a different actor every day in June. It was fun and all, but we thought it was time to change things up. Thanks to a suggestion from our Australian brother Bradley Lange, we had our idea: JUNESPLOITATION!

For every day in June, we've got a new exploitation category from which you can choose any movie you want. It doesn't even HAVE to be an exploitation movie! Maybe you don't like them as much as I do. That's ok! On June 1st, maybe you don't own a classic '70s car movie. Maybe you want to watch License to Drive instead. That counts! JUNESPLOITATION!

Do your best with what you have -- if you can't find something to match the category and you've already exhausted your options on Netflix Instant, Amazon Prime, Hulu or whatever platform you choose, just pick the closest thing you can that you still feel like watching. Last summer felt a little like work. This is supposed to be fun, so only pick stuff you WANT to watch.

Junesploitation!

For the first time, we've added two Free Spaces so you can watch WHATEVER you want from ANY of the categories.

JUNESPLOITATION!

Just like last year, we're asking that after you watch the movie, head over to the comments section for that day and post a short review/reaction. Seriously -- short. Like, 50 words or less. That way, other readers can chime in with a "Hey, I've never heard of that movie and now I want to see it!" or a "If you liked that one, check out..." The idea is to keep the discussion flowing quickly and easily, so we can't get bogged down in huge epic write ups. In order to make sure that this happens, we're going to reserve the right to delete posts that willfully ignore this rule. We don't want to do that. Keep it short.

Here are the categories. Any questions, sound off in the comments below or contact us at fthismoviepodcast[at]gmail.com.

And check out our Junesploitation Primer to help get ready!

  1. Peplum always makes me laugh as a genre title, just because it's from the Greek word for tunic, not Latin or Italian.

Yeah, I took Latin in high school.

  2. Kind-of short notice, isn't it? It would have been nice to have this a week or so ago to start planning ahead and seeking stuff for the first days of June from amazon or wherever. Oh well, let's play! I can mix this up with my ongoing year-long NEW-TO-ME MOVIES New Year's resolution for some serious JUNESPLOITATION fun. :-)

    1. We apologize for not being on your schedule.

    2. Just sayin' it would have been nice to have more time to track down a Pam Grier movie (June 4) or a cool exploitation car flick, neither of which I have (unlike Revenge! and Italian Horror! which I happen to have access to). Now I have to scramble just to be ready for Saturday. :-(

  3. Oh, this June?! Would have been cool to schedule this for June 2014 so I could track down some movies, save vacation time from work, and take the entire month off. Oh well, I guess some podcast/blog sites just don't respect their listeners. June 1... Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

    1. Hey pal - if YOU respected the podcasters, you'd QUIT your job like I just did.

    2. Good point...i just stormed my boss' office and told him to take this job and shove it. Hope he can let it slide and give me a second chance on July 1...

    3. I've just rented a second house and I'm not telling anyone my forwarding address so I'm not interrupted at all.

  4. So let me get this straight - it's not how long your review is, it's what you do with it?

It's funny, when I just skimmed this article (looking for my name - I do that with everything I read - it's EXHAUSTING) I thought those were the titles of movies and they all had exclamation points. Now I'm kinda disappointed Pam Motherfucking Grier! isn't a movie. It should be!

This should be fun. Now, I'll be your bestest friend in the whole world if you tell me you're going to put out a list of Netflix titles that fit those categories. Although I can see how that might funnel everyone in the same direction, so I guess I'll still be your friend if you don't. Kind of a win-win for ya there. Now can you drive me to get groceries?

    1. For the record I had meant to delete that stupid joke at the beginning before I posted this. I don't want anyone to think the high comedic standards I've set for myself are slipping.

  5. If I can suggest something for those "Free Space" days...how about some 1930's Exploitation? Roadshow films about sex, drugs and sin. These all aren't as funny as Reefer Madness but they're on YouTube as full files for free...

Marihauna - The Devil's Weed (that was the spelling at the time)
Assassin of Youth - Pot & "something stronger"
    The Cocaine Fiends - "snowbirds"
She Shoulda Said No - Pot
The Devil's Harvest - Pot & crime (could test your patience but at least stick it out to the end of the party)
The Devil's Sleep - The Goofballs & Speed
Damaged Lives - VD (one of my faves)
Sex Madness - VD, burlesque, a predatory lesbian and bad acting
Protect Your Daughters - "...from reality", evidently
Slaves In Bondage - prostitution and white slavery
Tomorrow's Children - forced sterilization & Schultze from "Freaks" makes an appearance
    Child Bride - Sleazy stuff
Dance Hall Racket - written and starring Lenny Bruce
    Mad Youth - Wild parties

There's probably more but I haven't found them yet.

Meanwhile, I'm going to start June with The Wild Ride starring Jack Nicholson. :-)

    1. Watching a movie now called Girl Gang (also on YouTube).

The first fourteen minutes is a "how to" on carjacking and a step by step demo on how to shoot heroin...

And yet somehow Ed Wood had nothing to do with this...

  8. So for June 1st, Herbie Goes Bananas would be an acceptable entry? It just struck me that the only way to be truly transgressive in an exploitation month would be to find the most saccharine things that could arguably fit the mold. I couldn't commit to that though, mostly because it would require actually watching Herbie Goes Bananas and I saw it in the theater and I still have the scars of that day upon my soul.

    1. 1. Herbie Goes Bananas would be perfectly acceptable.
      2. You do not have to watch Herbie Goes Bananas.

    2. Great, I mentioned this to my wife and now she thinks I should commit. She thinks June 2nd should be Revenge of the Ninjas and June 5th should be 3 Ninjas Kick Back. I had to leave the room when she demanded Ewoks Battle for Endor for the 6th. If my marriage survives this month, I'll let you know.

    3. Have you ever seen Revenge of the Ninja? IT IS THE BEST.

    4. About a year ago (I think) a popular podcast on the internet did a commentary for Revenge of the Ninja. I got a copy about that time, and watched it. I'd seen it during the 80s of course, but it was the first time in a decade or more.

Yes, I've seen Revenge of the Ninja, and it's pretty nifty.

  9. Here's some suggested flicks for a couple of days that you may not have seen:

June 1 - Cars! - Wheels of Terror (1990) A car essentially molests a kid in this one
June 2 - Revenge! - I saw the Devil - if you haven't seen it yet - you need to.
June 5 - Samurai & Ninjas! - Ninja Terminator - One of my all time favs
June 9 - Prison! - Female Convict Scorpion Jailhouse 41 - Beautifully shot
June 10 - Cannon Films! - Ninja III - The Domination - just came out on Blu Ray I believe. Lucinda Dickie a.k.a Special K Classic

    1. Cool! Thanks for the suggestions. A few there I haven't seen, and a few I love. Also, Wheels of Terror will hit too close to home for me.

    2. And unfortunately, Ninja III won't be out on Blu-ray until June 11. We'll miss it by that much. But it is incredible and worth buying for a Free Space day.

  10. I’m digging this “the only rule is there are no rules” attitude. As they often wrote in the late, lamented Cult Movies magazine, any movie can be a cult movie, and I’m betting in June we’ll all discover that any movie can be a ‘sploitation.

Remembering JB’s infamous alternate version from last year, I think one of the free spaces should go to SNAKES!!!

    1. Yes! One of the things I'm looking forward to most is seeing how everyone comes up with for a pick.

  11. Damn, this'll be fun. Love me some exploitation. love in every way. Love them for being fun movies. Love them for often thinking outside of the box and being ultra creative. Love them for being so bad they're good. And I love them for just being plain bad (I find you learn more about making movies when you can see the puppeteers strings and learning what not to do than when it is all seamless). My aim here is going to be to try to see at least 3 weeks worth (sorry, but im being realistic, although id love to do every day) and that they are all 70s style grindhouse exploitation or 80s cheap video style. No rules, but I want to feel dirty by the end of it ;-)

The tough decisions of which movie to watch we're going to be faced with is currently forming in my mind as either:
    A) trying to watch the movie that is held up as the calssic of the genre (either because it was first or is the best)
    B) Delving deeper in the genre to find those that not only exploit the subject matter but the goodwill of the movies that have come before (i.e. did you know there is a movie called "Mandinga"?)
    C) Purposefully seeking out a "so bad its good" or a little known random number.

Fingers crossed this is the dawn of a new awakening and not the beginning of the end by drowning.

  13. Love the Junesploitation idea Patrick. One quick question and forgive my ignorance what would be classified as a cannon film? Sadly my exploitation film knowledge is lighter than I would like it to be and I'll assume its not about the creation of cannons and their use in early modern warfare.

    1. While I fully support your interpretation of the category (and am VERY interested in what movie you would watch to match), it's actually movies put out by Cannon Films (mostly in the '80s). Check back later today for our Junesploitation Primer, which will give you a better idea of what many of the categories are. Great question!

    2. Amazing - I've actually been an extra a couple of times years ago, but I am not familiar with the lingo - does 64.00/8 mean $64 for 8 hours (i.e. $8/hr)? If so, I'm sure I can find ass-to-mouth work for a much more lucrative hourly rate.

    3. This has to win the comments for today.
