Patrick and JB both had 24-hour horror movie festivals. Did they make it back alive?

I'm impressed; I only made it to the Q&A after April Fool's Day. (Sorry, kept an eye out for you guys but didn't happen to see you.)
ReplyDeleteSorry about that, Joseph. That was on my list of things to do on Saturday-- meet you!
ReplyDeleteNext time, we exchange photos beforehand! But god, the Massacre puts on a nice lineup; I'd never seen any of the films shown up through April Fool's Day and had a blast.
ReplyDeleteWould like an opinon (or opinions)....
ReplyDeleteThey don't have marathons here but two locations of a theater chain here have been showing classic horror every weekend. One has been showing Universal monsters and will end with Nosferatu on the 29th. The other has been showing Hitchcock films.
Problem is, the night Nosferatu is showing is also the night the other theater is showing Psycho. I've seen neither on a big screen.
Which would you (anyone reading this) go see? ♥
First, invent a time machine... just kidding. Given how awful some prints of the public domain Nosferatu can be, wait for November 15th and watch that on the new Kino Blu-Ray. See Psycho on the big screen.
DeleteYes, Psycho for sure! It's a must-see on the big screen, especially if it's only your first time getting to do so!
DeleteI might give this a go. Seems like a nice way to see it for the first time. Hopefully its a good print.

Gret podcast, gents. Twice the massacres, double the number of movies discussed. I'm definitely gonna check "Dead and Buried" from the movies discussed, sounds like a ton of fun. And as a big fan of "Martin" (everyone that watches the movie when I loan it to them becomes a fan) I'm jealous that it was shown on the big screen. That movie is crazy in a slow-burn, controlled way that just freaking implodes in the final 5 minutes.
ReplyDeleteAnd man, JB mentioning his unwatched HD-DVD of "Slither" brings me back. This was the first high-def media disc (first of many) that I ever bought; I still have it and watch it, though depending on where I am I use the 'flipper' DVD side instead of the HD-DVD one. Shit, I still get junk e-mails from Target almost seven years after "Slither" was the first and only thing I've bought from their website. I saw "Slither" opening weekend in a decently-crowded theater and man, did this movie absolutely kill. I seeked "Firefly" and "Serenity" immediately after to get more Nathan Fillion goodness. If JB was impressed by Fillion in "Slither" and Whedon's "Much Ado About Nothing" (and his cameo in "Super") then he owes it to himself to get a full dose of Whedon/Fillion goodness with "Firefly" and "Serenity."
Finally catching up, glad to see some other people giving Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters some love. It may not be a great movie but god is it an entertaining movie at times.
ReplyDeleteIt's a blast. I really don't understand the negative reaction to that movie -- it is exactly what it sets out to be. It was a great way to close out the 24 hours.
DeleteI think a lot of the critical disdain towards "Hansel & Gretel" came from critics who hated "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter"(which couldn't be more different tonally) and saw the similar title and already made up their minds that it was unoriginal, lazy shit sandwich, sight unseen.
ReplyDeleteI also notice that the same critics who slammed it really loved to point out videos of Jeremy Renner on press junkets and talk shows and seeming to be bored and embarassed talking about "Hansel & Gretel". This seems unfair since I'm guessing doing several soul-crushing press junkets and interviews can cause a lot of actors/actressesto act the same way. The movie is definitely underrated.
Great discussion, dudes! In fact your conversation was so lively and life-like that I felt like I could literally taste, and hear, the Count Chocula JB was munching on! :)
ReplyDeleteSounds like it was fun. The closest Cedar Rapids would get to The Massacre is a 9 PM showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show...
I was looking forward to this podcast and it didn't disappoint - bunch of interesting movies there and I'm definitely going to try and incorporate some into my lineup over the next couple weeks. I watched Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters last night and thought it was a blast - definitely undeserving of all the hate - can't a movie just be fun sometimes?
ReplyDeleteI remember April Fool's Day blew my mind when I saw it - probably around the age of 10 - (BIG SPOILER) it was probably the first movie I watched with a big gotcha! (not to be confused with Gotcha!) ending (/SPOILER). Sad to hear it doesn't hold up well - I may watch it again but putting it low on the list.
Speaking of that list - I am so not ready for Scary Movie Month to be half-way over already! I am not feeling any of the horror-fatigue I felt last year and I'm going to have to do some serious cramming to get in everything I want to watch. Best SMM ever!
I totally agree. I'm usually getting scary movie fatigue by this point in the month too but I'm not feeling that at all this year. I'm still excited and trying to figure out when I'll have time to watch everything I still want to cram in. I've never seen Dead & Buried but I bought the blu-ray yesterday based on Patrick & JB's enthusiasm. Can't wait to give it a spin! I need to check out Hansel & Gretel too. Scary Movie Month isn't long enough this year, it seems.
DeleteAlso, this is the first time in the history of the Scary Movie Challenge that one of my entries was read on the show (actually two, I was the "two Dourifs for the price of one" guy) so I'm positively giddy from that. Thanks!
