  1. Apropos of your impressions and jokes on later MTV VJs, what's been making me feel really old lately is that it seems like almost every one of the original VJs have shows on Sirius XM. It's a little disconcerting.

  2. The Alf movie DID get made! PROJECT ALF, in 1996. It may or may not be on YouTube (he said shiftily).

  3. The F Everything shows are amongst my favourites, maybe because Doug is my favourite (see?)...maybe ...or maybe because now Im thinking about Doug's mom's side boob? (ahh)

Not until you guys mentioned it but I gotta agree this year has had quite a low standard of movies. Do the years best so far possibly include Place Amongst the Pines? that was alright. What Maisey Knew is apparently pretty good, but I havent seen it yet. The World's End has gotta be up there, deservedly so. Still some hope for the rest of the year with a Scorsese movie and a Coen Brothers movie coming out. hope, hope.

Love Actually is pretty good I reckon. Maybe not film class dissected good, but as a string of thematically linked feel good moments it holds together surprisingly well. Speaking of which, my Scary Movie Month palate cleanser was About Time, also by Richard Curtis. Similar rich sentimentality but, good god I enjoyed it. There is something about father son relationships in movies that get to me. I think its because male emotional expression is more uncommon than female, so seeing the deep intimate connection between two males holds extra weight. Im half expecting it to be a diminishing returns movie once the emotional swell is no longer the thing that carries me. Would love to hear others thoughts about it.

    1. I still like Love Actually, though I haven't seen it in a few years.

I saw About Time and I loved it for about an hour and then it started to not work for me. That bummed me out because there was a point in the movie where I thought "this could be in my top 5!"

The father/son material was good but it felt like an afterthought to me for the parts that didn't work - 1) once McAdams-Gleeson had kids the movie didn't have anywhere to go for them as a couple and 2) it's weird to decide to have this story be about a family that seems wealthy...why should I care that this rich boy can't get a girlfriend to take to his family's seaside country house? Those things aside, About Time was pretty good overall. I wanted to love it and I came out just liking it.

    2. Brad, me and my wife enjoyed About Time as well, even though I have a small problem with the stalkeresque feel of some of it.

    3. Yeah, I get both of your points. SPOILERS:
Regarding the films direction once they have kids, I actually liked that about it. For a while there it seemed like it was going to be a British Groundhog Day, so I was pleased when the movie came around quite quickly to "no, love conquers, they're meant to be together, carry on!". Then it goes on to explore the main character's love for all the people in his life and his growing acceptance that he can't completely control the parts of his life that mean the most to him.

MASSIVE SPOILERS below (not that its a sixth sense movie or anything):

and I personally loved how his decisions were to chose his kids over everyone else. It is such the right decision, because out of everyone his kids are who he has the responsibility for, not his sister or his dad.

So with those aspects being explore I liked how it wandered through his life, rather than have a clear specific plot focal point.

The rich kid aspect didnt bother me, mainly because the emotions seemed genuine and it wasnt really trying to draw too much sympathy from the audience around his status. Its pretty clear he has it good and he is going to continue to have it good. His struggles were emotional, not material.

Re:Stalker feel. Yeah, he was a bit of a dick to the other guy, but if no one remembers that you cut their lunch, was the lunch ever really cut?

  4. What's your thoughts on "The Santa Clause". I remember liking it when it first came out and seeing it not too long ago and kind of being underwhelmed by it. It could be the not-great/atrocious sequels, or the datedness of the movie and Tim Allen's schtick.

Also, I feel that we saw different versions of "Star Trek Into Darkness" because I enjoyed the hell out of it.

Yeah, Doug, I know how you feel. Doucebag extrodinaire Bret Easton Ellis ruined "Gravity" for me.

    1. I like The Santa Clause 2! I still like the first one but I agree it's super dated and when it's bad; IT'S BAD.

    2. There were things to like about "The Santa Clause 2" and I liked that there seemed to be an effort in making an entertaining movie. However, "The Santa Clause 3" is unwatchable.

    3. I've never been able to finish watching The Santa Clause 3. Really terrible.

I might write something one day that includes a defense of The Santa Clause 2 so I'll hold those comments. Let's just say it has one GREAT scene and one other scenes that has the sexiest thing I've ever seen in a movie.

  5. I hear you on having a hard time choosing favorite movies of the year. I'm still struggling myself. I don't want to put words in your mouth, but I would have thought that You're Next would be your favorite movie so far this year, Patrick. Maybe I'm wrong about that. For me, here's what I have so far.

    7. Spring Breakers
    6. Fast and Furious 6
    5. Captain Phillips
    4. This is the End
    3. The World's End
    2. Prisoners
    1. Gravity

As I said, some might also include You're Next, or maybe The Conjuring, but I'm not sure I would, personally. I also have high hopes for American Hustle, The Wolf of Wallstreet and Inside Llewyn Davis (that's supposed to come out this year, right?). I feel like there will be a few last minute greats for the year. We'll see.

Regarding Star Wars, the fact that that the movie has to change writers at this point does admittedly make me a bit nervous, but I think it is in some of the most capable hands possible at this point, so hopefully there won't be too much of a problem if they pick up the pace a bit. I also hope they don't rush into making a bad movie. Ugh.

On my comments about X-Men, I firmly believe there is still room for great movies in that franchise, and I also firmly believe DoFP will be just that. I will admit that there have been at least two bad movies, but there have also been some great ones, and I think the next one will signal an upswing in the franchise. If anything, I think Bryan Singer needs to be put to bed more than the X-Men franchise. I think he's been at his best most recently with this franchise, but he has still had more failures than successes overall lately, I would say.

  6. Man, did this podcast bring back a lot of memories. As a kid, I remember watching ALF every week & then there was the cartoon that took place on his home planet. I even wanted the ALF video game for my Sega Master System. (Yes, I was one of the few idiots, who owned one before I saved enough to buy a Nintendo in 1989! I had to be one of the last gamers in North America to get an NES) It was one of my favorite shows & then a few months ago, I tried to watch a few episodes on the HUB channel & I said to myself “What the hell did I ever see in this show”. Even by generic 80’s TV comedy standards, it’s a lousy show.

BTW, the Noid got his own NES game called “Yo! Noid”.

I agree with Patrick on the lack of interest for Hunger Games Catching Fire. Even though I wasn’t the target audience, I liked a lot of the first one. This sequel just seems to be condescending to the Twilight teenage love triangle angst garbage. The fact that Gary Ross isn’t directing because he didn’t want to be rushed to a release date doesn’t give me a lot of confidence in the quality. It’s definitely a RedBox or Netflix for me.

I’m glad to see Patrick is finally coming around to The Dark Knight Rises. I know I’ll get slammed for this, but there are certain scenes where Bane comes off as a better villain than the Joker. I still get chills when he puts his hand on Daggett and says, “Do you feel in charge?”. The Blackgate Prison & No Despair without Hope speeches is great work by Tom Hardy.

Finally, can we all admit that Bryan Singer had made only two good to great moves: Usual Suspects & X2. Is there anybody out there rushing to buy Superman Returns, X-Men, Jack and the Giant Slayer, or Apt Pupil?

    1. I don't think it's blasphemy to say that you like parts of Bane better as a villain than The Joker. If nothing else, it's cool that they went in the complete opposite direction -- if The Joker was about anarchy, Bane was about carefully organized facist order. Neat idea. It never came together the way I would have hoped, but I like what's behind it. I wouldn't say I'm coming around on TDKR, but I do keep trying to see what so many others see.

      Agreed on Bryan Singer.

  7. I understand the buyer's regret on naming something (though I think F This Movie is the coolest name). I don't know if you will understand my fantasy football comparison, but give it a shot. I created my league over a decade ago and named it Drunk by Kickoff. I named my team Bloody Beef Curtains... I now have three children and also find my self in different settings than I did a decade ago. Needless to say, if the conversation of fantasy football comes up nowadays, there are many times I try to gloss over my creative naming abilities! :)
    Great podcast dudes...really funny.

  8. Nice fun random podcast guys. Personally I could never get into ALF, in fact my favorite adult puppet show is of all things Greg the Bunny (crickets chirping). I'm not too worried about Star Wars, I just need it to be good, it doesn't have to be a religious experience, although I'm hoping for the best.

I do have a podcast request for November that I can't believe hasn't been done and that's the only truly awesome thanksgiving movie ever (sorry free birds) and that's Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. Or to put it another way "I want a fuc$ing podcast on fu@king planes trains and automobiles right fu@king now.

    PS please:)

  9. You guys know that these are always my favorite episodes. You two have a chemistry that's in a long line of classic duos: Abbot and Costello, Laurel and Hardy, Martin and Lewis, Schwarzenegger and Stallone...scratch that last one. These episodes fill me with joy. It's almost too much. I listen to them through a hole in a paper plate so as not to blow my eardrums out from the awesome power.

I STILL love California Raisins, and I watch that stupid Christmas special every single year. Last year I even tracked down the California Raisins Christmas album on vinyl. My wife and child are very polite, but neither one has any idea why I love those raisins so much (it's because I, too, want to be a tiny Motown singer...or black).

    1. Oh, also, it looks like Kathleen Kennedy got her December 2015 release date for Star Wars. I guess that's good news for the movie, and I'm pleased to see that she went to bat for getting that extra six months, but I've never been less excited about something that should be a dream come true. This whole thing feels like it's being held together with bubble gum and tape. I don't know for a fact that it's a troubled production, but it sure feels like one.

  10. I just read that Star Wars Episode VII is set for a December 18, 2015 release. So much for Star Wars in the summer. It's probably for the best, though, and I don't really care when it gets released, as long as we still get it in 2015.

    1. I just wrote that, too! I hope they use that six months to really craft a good, all ages fantasy story that's fun to watch.

    2. Haha, jinx! But really, I agree with what you said. I think the extra time could only serve to improve the story, and I am not married to the idea of it coming out during the summer, so it's fine. It does sound like that movie is having enough problems, and I'm glad they don't have to worry as much about rushing to hit a certain date. I'm worried about the whole thing, but I'll wait until trailers start appearing to freak out or not and remain hopeful for a miracle in the meantime.

  11. Great podcast guys, always love these scattershot eps.

Star Wars: I think I can say, without bitterness, that I just don't really care anymore. I'll always love that universe and have fondness for the originals, be slightly irritated and confused at the multitude of easily avoidable missteps of the prequels and eventually go see most everything new that comes out in theatres, but I'm not going to hang on all of the developments leading up to the new trilogy and I'm pre-resigned to the possibility they won't be very good. Somewhere in my brain there's a pleasure switch that gets turned on at the mere sight of a lightsaber so I'll always have that at least!

Love Actually: I've never seen it - I assume I should at least once?

Christmas Movies in General: I like Christmas Story but I've seen it as many times as I need to - I'll take Die Hard or, hey, Gremlins over that one any day!

ALF: Even at a young age I wanted to see the Mom's boobs in the shower - those opening credits were a real cocktease!

The Movies of 2013: I feel like I saw a lot of okay movies this year - 2013 was my back-in-the-theatre year (I've probably gone to more movies this year than I did from 2005-2012) and I'm sure the "I'm at the Movies!" effect was very influential, but even still nothing came close to blowing me away like, say, Cloud Altas (which I didn't see until blu-ray so it's MY best of 2013 so far). I loved You're Next for the fun, horror movie experience it provided, but it's not a GREAT movie in that sense, and I would say the same for Furious 6 or This is the End or The World's End - I "loved" them all, but it's like the difference between loving your cat and loving your wife, you know?

  12. Great show fellas.

Might I suggest that a possible reason that Scary Movie Month was easier on us this year was that the rest of the year was so rough on us? Hear me out. For every Dark Knight Rises we had last year, we had an Avengers to balance it out. For each Prometheus, a MiB 3. Now imagine a year where we got almost nothing but The Dark Knight Rises over and over again. We did, and to paraphrase Theoden from Lord of the Rings, a single Fast 6 can do little against such reckless hate. I believe that our spirits had been severely broken by the summer, and the year just barely started to rebound at the end of August. That's nearly 2/3 of a year that was out and out awful! So in October, when we're usually worn down by murder, gore, and ugliness of the human soul, we accepted it more readily since most of what we had to get back to was equally ugly and mean spirited.

  13. Funny, I'm having the opposite problem of Patrick in that I have way too many candidates for my personal Top 10 of 2013. And I absolutely have one film (two actually) I'm head-over-heels in love with that is unlikely to climb down from the top spot. And that doesn't include the November and December releases, which are likely to sneak a few great films before year's end. It's been a great year for movies provided you didn't put a lot of stock in the big summer studio movies. If you did then, well, you're fucked. :-P
