Weekend Weigh-in: Is There a Movie You Don't Like That You Can't Stop Watching?

I wouldn't know anything about this.

I have a weird relationship with bad movies. There are plenty I go my whole life ignoring. But then there are some that I'm drawn back to again and again. At what point do they just become movies that I actually like?

I'm not talking about "guilty pleasures," either. I don't mean a movie everyone else thinks is bad but that you like. I'm talking about a movie that actually dislike that you see more than once for whatever reason. Let's have it!

    1. Oh, duh. It's The Addams Family. I've probably watched it 20 times and it's never worked but I get so hopeful that 'this will be the time' whenever I put it on.

  2. I've seen Hangover Part 2 three times. I don't know why.

  3. Punisher: War Zone. In theory I should love this movie. But, everytime I see it wanting to like it, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I think it's because it wants to be over-the-top with violence and some of the performances, but then it tries to be SUPER serious(hard to believe that Dominic West and Julie Benz's performances are in the same movie).

  4. Pitch Perfect. Always on HBO. Girlfriend loves it. Anna Kendrick. All the components are there.

    1. Yes! I'll watch the heck out of some Pitch Perfect, even though there's a lot about it that bugs me, i.e.: cliche story, out of place gross-out humor, supremely annoying "aca" language. But the music (which I do like) and Anna Kendrick (who I have a mad crush on) keep me coming back every time.

  5. Color of Night, mostly for the sex scenes between Bruce Willis and Jane March.

  8. I watch There Will Be Blood and Blade Runner every couple of years hoping I will like them. There Will Be Blood makes me feel dirty. Blade Runner... I Have seen it at least 5 times at this point and I don't remember a single thing about it.

  9. TMNT 2: The Secret of the Ooze. I watched this probably 100 times within a 5 year period from age 5 to 10 and always loved it. I recently re-watched it for the first time in years and for some reason, I still love it... I don't know why.

  10. I have seen Beverly Hills Cop 3 at least 20 times. It has all the markings of a movie that I would normally despise, the silly premise, poorly edited action, repetitive scenes, corny dialogue. But for some reason, once of twice a year I can't help but watch it. Here's the thing though, I'm really not that crazy about the first two. I actually don't like #2 at all, and I like the first one but I'm never really excited to watch it. Most movies I can explain why I like them or think they're good. But Beverly Hills Cop 3 has no defense, and I can't explain it.

Also, Robocop 2. Probably just because I love the first so much, plus RoboCain.

  11. Star Trek V. It's my secret shame. Well, I say secret - but what I really mean is that I'll tell anyone at the drop of a hat and I've even written articles about it.

But believe me, there is shame.

  12. The Golden Compass. Think the movie is a boring mess but I can't help watching it because it's a movie adaptation of one of my favourite books. The first five minutes always gets me excited... and then I realise the rest of the movie is garbage, but I HAVE to keep watching out of solidarity for this property that I love.

  13. Tough question. I have a lot of guilty pleasures. I enjoy a lot of so-bad-it’s-good movies (like Lynch’s DUNE), and I have a lot of sympathy for at-least-they-tried movies (like DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS).

But movies I genuinely dislike that I watch anyway? I guess that would have to be when the movie is part of a series. Because I’m me, I can’t watch just one movie in a series without rewatching the whole thing. If I’m going to watch the classic HALLOWEEN, that means I’m setting myself up for huge stinking chunk-buckets like CURSE OF MICHAEL MYERS and RESURRECTION as well.

Similarly, every time I rewatch the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET series, there’s no way I can skip part 2. I know part 2 is a good discussion-starter on gender and sexuality, which is good, but it’s still a dreadfully dull movie to sit through. But I can’t just jump ahead to part 3, I just CAN’T!!!

  14. I guess The Wizard with Fred Savage? It's nothing but a glorified Nintendo and Super Mario Brothers 3 commercial with cheesy dialogue. However, the nostalgia factor connected to my childhood still gets me every time. I don't know, this still might fall into the "guilty pleasure" category because I kind of like it...

  15. The Odd Couple II. The first one is a movie I love, and I keep trying to like the second. I've seen it four or five times and it sucks out loud, yet I'll probably watch it again.

  16. Any movie with Daniel Stern and most Jeff Goldblum movies.

    1. Not sure if it holds up, but I used to think Bushwhacked really worked.

    2. I used to watch Bushwacked at least every six months, it's got some stupid parts but it is actually pretty entertaining.

  17. After great personal meditation I realize growing up for a long time and watching Weekend at Bernie's 2 many more times than I should have despite the fact I didnt laugh once while watching the movie. Although a close second would have to be The Wizard since that one came out during the height of my game playing days.

  18. I watch bad movies that I like despite their obvious issues because they still manage to be entertaining on some level (ex: Star Trek V).

Bad movies that I hate because they just suck in every way possible, I never watch again (ex: Star Trek Nemesis).

  19. The fifth through eighth Harry Potter movies.

    ... Just kidding! I don't like those movies at all. #HermioneandHarry #HermioneandNeville #HermioneandLuna #HermioneandGaith #HermioneandnoseriouslyanybodybutRon

  20. Stumbling across movies is much more difficult now that I don't have cable, but when I did, I watched part of Transformers 1 many times. It doesn't quite fit this question, since I never finished it, but I would be tempted back to watching pieces of it on HBO. The movie got a pass from many critics for its visuals, so I would think that the visuals in HD would be enough to carry me through. They were not. I could not make it more than 20-30 minutes. But in few months, it would be on, and I'd have to watch another little chuck before my good sense kicked in.
