  1. Have you guys seen his recent Radio Shack commercial? It's wonderful.

  3. You should totally come here to Orlando for a short trip in late December, Patrick. Our local art house theater is showing Gone With the Wind (hint, hint) AND The Wizard of Oz on back-to-back days. I'm super looking forward to that, myself.

Anyway, I love me some Weird Al. I most prominently listened to him in the early days with Weird Al Yankovic in 3-D and Dare to Be Stupid, and then he rose back to prominence for me with Bad Hair Day (I loved Amish Paradise), and now again with Mandatory Fun. Though my attention to him has had its ebbs and flows, he's always been a performer that I have admired and had a lot of positive nostalgia toward. Sounds like I'm going to have to track this movie down, as I have never seen it and would probably enjoy it.

    1. There's never been a better time to buy and watch UHF for the first time. Enjoy!

  4. It's funny, Erich; I didn't see Psycho until I was...38, perhaps? I felt like I had, just because of references and parodies over the years, but when I actually sat down to watch it I was massively confused. What's with this office job? Wait, she's embezzling money? There's a creepy highway patrolman? I simply didn't know that all of the parodies start at the shower scene and go from there, ignoring the first half of the movie and all of that was completely new to me. Which was nice.

    1. I had a similar experience last night, seeing Vertigo in my local movie theater. I know I saw it a long time ago, but I completely forgot the second half of the movie. I thought it ended in the bell tower.

  5. I can't find my copy of UHF. I forgot the Dewey Decimal System!

  6. I've never gotten around to watching this despite always wanting to. But if I read between the lines your saying that I should see it?

I'm assuming because I haven't seen it I didn't get the end joke on the podcast. But rest assured a just spent a couple minutes trying to get my MP3 player to play the podcast end properly. Feel proud.

    1. Now I can't think of what the joke is, but I don't remember making an inside reference. I DO remember hearing your twitter handle read on the new Movie Crypt, though! Boom! Score one for The Maestro X!

    2. Haha - nice - I was the "Sol" on the Steve Niles podcast but they didn't say my brilliant Twitter handle, dammit! And I thought that question was going to be my ticket to Twitter stardom - don't forget us little guys when you're at the top, Brad!

    3. Oh Damnit! There was a long gap of silence after Erich said "The secret is... " that had me going "Wait, What's the secret?! What... Oh you guys." I now double checked and it did start playing again with the end of the show. You got me double punked.

Nice. Movie crypt is next on the podcast schedule, because priorities.
The Hemispheric Doppelgangers strike again. I've had another question asked before. I feel pressured when I see the twitter post with only single digit time next to it.
Don't worry, I'll never forget you Bill.

    4. I didn't realize that was there. Something went wrong and dropped out in the editing/uploading. Sorry about that. It's too bad, because the secret Erich revealed was REALLY good and would have solved everything. Oh well.

  7. UHF is a great flick and I pretty much agree with everything that was brought up in the podcast. I wish Weird Al was a big time guy when I was a kid growing up and the rest of my family couldnt wait to destroy my cd collection. Its a shame that spoof movies like UHF arent made anymore. Our only hope for another UHF movie is if the studios in their ongoing search to remake old properties decided a UHF sequel/reboot is needed.

Of course this is only a good thing if Weird Al is writing the script and has approval which is I admit probably a pipe dream. I would hate to find out they are doing it without AL cause then i would have to scream "Stupid, you so stupid!"

  8. I have to admit I haven't seen this but I will buy it now! I love what you were saying about the nature of parody. There is a trend to be mean through it which it was never meant to be. Take Honest trailers, I feel they are almost encouraging their commenters to be mean to the fans of the movie or to say you're wrong for loving this. Or even wrong for having a relationship with a song (Buckley) or film. God forbid we feel something! I adore French and Saunders as well as Carol Burnett's movie parodies as they are so affectionate. Like F&S's Mama Mia parody, it's seeing the film and going I want to do that! Rather than I want to bash that.

  9. I don't think streaming channels can without significantly raising their prices. Which is fine, I'd pay $20 a month for a streaming channel if they had a more massive selection that includes lots of newer films.

  10. Late to this party - haven't seen UHF in a long time but I'll be sure to check it out soon. I'm also a big Weird Al fan from way back - he seemed to have a special relationship with the Canadian music channel, MuchMusic, where he did a lot of appearances/interviews/hosting - I think we've always loved him up here. I can proudly say that my first two CDs, that my Mom bought me in the US with a CD player as a consolation for missing the trip, were Weird Al's "Fat" and the Boomerang soundtrack (WTF Mom?!). Needless to say Fat got a lot of play for awhile there.

Great podcast - I really thought you'd just ended it on "The secret is..." which would have been brilliant.
