Where the F is Doug? #5

by Doug Schultz
Whatever.

It's fairly apparent that the cinema savants among you will ID the location in this picture within the first half hour of posting. And that's great! But let's try to get a dialogue flowing too. Do you like the movie this building is featured in? Does it hold up? Also, how are you feeling today? No, really. It's OK ... this is a safe place.

TRY TO GUESS WITHOUT USING GOOGLE!

As always, please post your guesses in the comments below. If you can find a matching movie still or video that features this location, great! Share that as well. If you're stuck, I'll post clues throughout the day.

This pic is also posted on our Instagram feed, www.instagram.com/fthismovie. If you're already on that app, please follow us!

Good luck!

  1. Cal Poly Pomona! I'm not sure which movie that building appears in, but I remember the guide telling us about it during orientation many many years ago.

  2. It reminds me of the scene in the Dark Knight where the Joker is walking out in a nurse's dress as the hospital blows up behind him. That's probably not it. I think the Dark Knight was shot in New York anyway. So I'll go with Demolition Man. I'm definitely getting a Demolition Man vibe. Come on Wesley Snipes, help me out here.

    1. The Dark Knight was shot in Chicago, actually.

    2. Yeah, the hospital was the office building for the old massive Brach's candy factory on Chicago's west side, which they just finished demolishing this year. (The nice thing about my train ride every day is that it goes past the site and I could see it going on.)

  3. I seem to remember the triangle building from Gattica, but I need to watch it again to be sure. Not that that's a problem, because Gattica is awesome.

    1. Also it's spelled "Gattaca." In my defense I had a root canal today.

    2. Confirmed! It helps that it's in the opening credits. Now for the rest of this classic...

  5. Hey Doug
It seems noone quite understood your clear instructions.
Even though I haven't yet seen it, I'm guessing that it's the new post apocalyptic horror flick for kids, "Without using google" - A grim look into a dark world where information is no longer at the tip of your fingers

    1. Not a rule, per se -- just a suggestion :)

Sure, a Google image search might yield an immediate answer, but I think it's more fun when people bounce ideas off each other.

And that's what the "F" in "F This Movie" stands for ... FUN.

    2. ... Because sometimes you're all 'Fun' this Movie?? :P

  6. Doug, I hope eventually you will get to a certain location on Glendower Avenue in Los Angeles. This particular location has an undeniably rich cinematic history...

  7. Hector and Steve K. nailed it -- this is the CLA Building at Cal Poly Pomona, most famously featured in GATTACA because of its futuristic look.

Fun fact: despite built in 1993, the CLA Building is slated for demolition in the next few years. Even though it looks "cool," it's a garbage structure -- it leaks water, and it doesn't meet California earthquake code requirements.
