  1. Maxwell Caulfield and Christopher McDonald in the same movie makes Grease 2 a classic. Only one missing is William Atherton.

Fired up for tomorrow, guys! My 3rd one with you all. Gonna kill it :) Btw - Going to Monster-Mania Friday and Saturday. It's my first Horror convection (I did Spooky Movie Fest Last Year but that was just movies) so hopefully it will be cool.

  2. "M" is more of a crime thriller than a horror film. The film historians on the Criterion disc call it "An issues film" (capital punishment). A good replacement would be "Mad Love" - another remake of "The Hands of Orloc" with Peter Lorre.

I'm going to stick with my usual plan for SSM - find as much stuff as I can that I haven't seen before and mix in that which I haven't seen for awhile. It's always the seven words that are the work....

  3. I like Curtains too, Patrick. I haven't skated alone on a frozen pond since. (Living in Florida helps, though.)

  4. Oh...and Doug's question about listening to the commentary tracks with or without the movies....
I have them as a file in my mp3 player. I listen to them on the bus when I'm not in the mood for music, at work when I'm coding files, when I'm out shopping and sometimes at night when I can't get to sleep (which JB's singing gets pretty loud during Maximum Overdrive but....)
I've listened to them with the movies, too. But I know the movies well enough that I don't really need them playing

  6. I don't envy you when you'll have to put this year's Scary Movie Challenge into the "primer" post for next year with 31 different parts...

Man, I DO envy the emailer who gets to experience all those great movies, whether for the first time or not. Not a bad apple in the bunch there.

Finally, I do recommend giving The Omen a go, Patrick, if for no other reason than to say you scratched that itch. However, it leans into the whole "religious horror" sub-genre a bit, I would say, which you mentioned you're not a fan of, so I don't know if it'll be your thing or not. I'm also biased because I pretty much love anything with Gregory Peck.

    1. I was pretty surprised to hear that Patrick never saw "The Omen". I also recommend to see it. Even if it´s not your kind of horror film, at least you can enjoy Jerry Goldsmiths great score.

  7. Super excited for SMM. Just today the temperature here literally dropped 10 degrees and it's all overcast and gray. It's as if nature knows.

    1. The weather shifted in my neck of the woods as well. Oh so appropriately.

  8. This only has one of the two "romantic" (not romantic) leads, but I would say Repo Man fulfills the condition of a car magically flying off closely enough that I might put it above Grease.

  9. You've opened a dangerous can of worms, Patrick and Doug. Prepare to receive my list of horror movies and be compelled to send me a podcast response indicating which movies I should and should not watch.

  10. Although, now that I've actually finished the podcast, I guess the list wouldn't change too much after sending it to you. Great episode, fellas! Love to have Doug back :) (And sorry for commenting repeatedly throughout the podcast, if I don't I just forget what I was gonna say.)

  11. Alright guys, I'm looking around my house.

In the freezer: Hostel, Last House on the Left, Deep Red, Ringu, The Eye.

On a kitchen table near the freezer: The Mist, Stake Land, Drag Me to Hell, The Woman, House of Wax, Dead of Night, Hellraiser, Friday the 13th Part 5, Peeping Tom.

M, Spring, and Invaders from Mars are buried beneath a gentle pile of dry leaves in my backyard.

I'm not ready to let go of Tremors. But give yourselves some credit! That's 17 that we've relocated from my immediate queue to other rooms, which is exactly what was needed. I'm hoping to watch more than 31, but I feel confident about my core list now.

To answer some questions -- No, I haven't seen any of these before. Except for Night of the Living Dead but I was drunk at a bar and it didn't count. And Doug, don't worry about the predicament of my future SMM lists. I'm sure they'll be shittier or at least second-rate compared to this year, so they may not be as difficult to refine, but my freezer is definitely full of possibilities for years to come >:)

Also, I don't own any of these movies. I'm a bit of a physical media purist but only because I live in Seattle and have the lovely Scarecrow Video vault at my disposal. I have no doubt they have all of the titles discussed. That being said -- If any other F'ers live in Seattle -- I highly recommend renting your SMM flicks from Scarecrow. They have a vast curated Halloween section at this time of year AND on Wednesdays you get 2-for-1 rentals. Most of the time that means you can make out with four great films for $9 total, and a week before they're due back.

Anyway THANK YOU PATRICK AND DOUG! You guys are the best and I had a ton of fun listening to this show. One more day!!!

  12. That Flight to World War II movie sounds like a terrible knockoff of the 1980 movie Final Countdown, a pretty decent flick with Kirk Douglas and Martin Sheen where a modern aircraft carrier goes through a wormhole to December 10, 1941 and has to decide whether to stop the attack on Pearl Harbor.

  13. My vote for bury in the backyard would be THE WOMAN. I understand it's generally well-regarded and believe I understand why...but I don't agree with the why. I found it obvious and therefore tedious. And gross.

  14. Flight World War II's poster on imdb is amazing. It features the statement: "Based on true events" as well as "The Greatest Battle that never happened!". How can you turn that down?

  15. I like the watched or bury in backyard part, or as I was calling it, "stash it or slash it." Helped me frame my list.

  16. a big reason to watch Invaders from Mars is that it was done for 290,000 - William Cameron Menzies...he did a LOT with a little bit of money.
