  1. In Night of the Living Dead, I'm not sure staying in the basement would've kept them alive. The little girl was infected and could have attacked them down there. This is such an interesting subject because it is pretty subjective. I've seen most of the movies you talked about but Cannibal Holocaust is the one that effects me. I feel like even picking up my copy gives me vertigo. You reviewed Proxy awhile back and I tried watching that but after the inciting incident, I turned it off. I keep thinking I want to go back to it but then I realize that I'm good.

    1. Good call on Proxy. I should have mentioned that one. If you're ever able to get past that first scene, the rest of the movie is pretty good (and not AS hard to watch).

  2. The subject matter made this the least relaxing episode I've ever listened to, but you guys managed to be funny so good job.

  3. Have you guys seen Three Extremes? That movie was too extreme for me. Same with the Masters of Horror episode Imprint which they showed at a Massacre and made me almost pass out.

    1. Yes eeek! I remember discussing our reactions to Three Extremes after I watched it last SMM. It is on my list for sure.

  4. Ive not seen that one Adam, and I ain't gonna track if down any day soon ;)
Cheers Guys, I was just thinking about the Exorcist evil being trapped in the celluloiod, Did it get transfered in HD to Bluray? Lost in translation maybe? Very amusing, I own that many versions of that film that if the Demon is trapped in the movie I have at least 4 versions of the Demon in my house, perfect for SMM
Re Going to Far? A couple that affected me were the first time I saw Faces of Death! Some images were stuck in my head for ages, a German film called Murder Set Pieces about a Nazi who is stalking kids, I don't recommend it, there is a bathroom scene that I hard to forget and finally Nekromantik 2 with the girl having sex with the dead guy, not easy viewing,
Talking about Cannibal Holocaust and animal cruelty and me watching the Friday the 13th movies this week I had forgot about the scene with the Snake that they really killed in Part 1

  5. Ha - "Not that there's anything wrong with that" was MY review of ANoES2 a couple years ago - it was also read at the time. Clearly Worst Lieutenant is my soulmate. And man, everyone is really killing it with the reviews - amazing how far this has come - I don't think 5,000 is too much of a stretch!

Great show and love the topic but I don't know guys, I think your bar for "too far" was a little too low. Killing real animals in Cannibal Holocaust - definitely! Getting a little girl to jam a crucifix into her privates - probably a little too far! But the super gross stuff in The Fly? Nah - I think some of your picks were just really effective at being horrifying, as opposed to something that went "too far". I'm sure we'd all agree that The Fly is damn near perfection. Not that I didn't enjoy the discussion all the same I just think you strayed too far from the reasonable parameters of "too far". To be fair I am struggling to come up with any myself...there were a couple scenes in The Hills Have Eyes remake that came close, but again, those could also just be considered very effective - it's a tough distinction to make.

    1. I know that The Fly doesn't actually go too far for most of us horror fans, which is why I tried to explain it as being something that was crazy shocking and gross to most "normal" people when it came out. I didn't want the show to be just a list of outrageous fucked up things I've seen in movies, so I tried to come up with some different ways to approach it.

That Hills Have Eyes remake is pretty rough. I could have put that bird scene on the list.

  6. Great podcast! The only scene I can think of right now that I felt and too far isn't even from a horror movie. There was a scene in episode 9 of the most recent season of Game of Thrones that I felt went too far. It was necessary for the story but the scene lingered so long that it just left me cold and speechless. More so than anything I've seen in both movies and television.

  7. I think the scissor scene in Antichrist would definitely be at the top of my list.

    2. Thats the first time I've had to look away from the screen in a while

    3. Yikes! Yes! Lars Von Trier hates genitals in that movie.

  8. First time a niece/aunt pair have both had #SMM reviews read by Patrick? Fist bump, Brenda Shea.

  9. Great show guys! One that cones to my mind I saw recently in Cemetery Man. Its the scene where the lead character makes out with his dead girlfriend who came back to life as a rotting corpse. That was a little rough to watch. Not for violence but just for pure 'sickness'.

  10. That one scene in saw 3 or 4 where the guy*spoiler* gets tortured by way of twisting of various limbs until they break, sounds of bones breaking included. Definitely a cringe inducing moment

  11. Mine isn't a horror movie but that scene at the beginning of Shawshank Redemption where the chubby prisoner gets the living shit kicked out of him by the evil guard because he won't stop crying really disturbed me. Something about the way the guy was begging him to stop and the guard just keeps beating him mercilessly, it affected me and I still have a hard time watching that scene.

  12. I'm not disturbed very easily by over-the-top violence and gore, I just watched the Saw films and was pretty detached from it all, even though the gore-ific scenes were pretty well made. That said, I'm in no hurry to watch Cannibal Holocaust or Serbian Film.

I think the biggest reaction I've had to a movie is the rape scene in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (the Swedish original, haven't seen the remake). You can just feel her desperation as she's helpless to do anything about it. But I wouldn't say it's going too far, and the movie would definitely be less without it.

    1. I should mention I've only seen the 3-hour "TV version" of it, I don't know if that particular scene is any different in the theatrical.

  13. Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs has a similar scene with its female lead. Another rape scene that's been accused of being played as "she doesn't want it but she...does?" Its an unnerving scene with an unnerving(and confusing) message.

  14. The rape scene from Irreversible I think is the worst there is.

    1. That scene definitely changes you as a human being.

    2. I have stayed away from this. But the whole of I spit on your grave was too much for me.

    3. Stay away from it. Most aspects of the movie right down to the audio are designed to upset the viewer. It is a very upsetting movie and purposefully so.

    4. Yet, it's one of the most important films of the past twenty years. It's a beautiful movie in some aspects. It's one of the only movies that I won't own because I won't ever watch it again but I think that everyone should see it once. Noe, love him or hate him (I'm actually not really a fan), has a distinct voice and Irreversible might be his best movie so far. Yes, it's brutal and harrowing at times with one of the most disturbing scenes ever, but it's not done just for shock value. There is redemption in the film. I haven't seen "Love" and I'm not really interested as I think Noe is NOW doing things for shock on some level (I hated "Enter the Void") but, I think Irreversible is masterful in it's experimental execution.

  15. This episode is just confirmation that I never EVER need to see Cannibal Holocaust.

  16. The slow version of Wave of Mutilation is great but I have to take the fast version as my desert island choice

  17. The fire extinguisher scene in irreversible is the most repulsive thing I've ever seen in a film. didn't make it past that, and I never will.

  18. Agree with the top picks and would add Man Bites Dog as a film just as disturbing as Henry (in my top five list Henry holds positions 1-3). Strangely, I don't find Cronenberg troubling at all. Maybe because as a woman person when I see the gnawing-through-the-umbilical scene or the birthing-a-larvae scene I think "oh yeah, I dreamed that one time too"
